Heat Wave: A Novel | Penelope Lively
25 posts | 12 read | 32 to read
It is a long, hot summer at World's End, a two-family grey stone cottage in the English countryside. Pauline is editing a romance novel in the smaller dwelling, and the larger part is occupied by her daughter, Teresa; Teresa's baby; and her husband, Maurice, a writer, whose infatuation with his editor's girlfriend is growing. Pauline fears for Teresa, who is passionately in love with her husband, for she senses Maurice's imminent betrayal. She remembers a time when her possessive passion for Teresa's father eroded her own youth. A stunning and unexpected denouncement irrevocably changes the order of things for this family, whose intimacy the reader abandons reluctantly at novel's end.

Another great story from Penelope Lively as she describes the relationship between Pauline and her adult daughter Teresa. During a hot summer in Pauline's countryside cottage, Teresa, her author husband, and yng baby are a family on edge, but Pauline's memory of her own husbands infidelity years before mirror the current situation. Family tension is evoked with great skill by an author whose work I always enjoy.

BarbaraBB A good read indeed! 9mo
Reggie I love this one. I love how Luke seems like this bumbling butterfly while all the adults in his life are in this drama. 9mo

Photo credit: Andrew Wheth‘s Christina‘s World. I really liked this book. The narration by Davina Porter made it that much more magical for me. Time seems to fold in on itself as Pauline watches her daughter discover her husband‘s infidelities just as she once upon a time discovered her own husband‘s, as they are all stuck at World‘s End. Two houses out in the country. Lively can write, and her writing is silky and scrumptious. I didn‘t like 👇🏼

Reggie what happened in the end, though. Still a pick. 2 thoughts: 1. The Wife by Meg Wolitzer is somewhat of a read alike though I enjoyed this more. 2. Wastelands has stories where there are 1 man and 1 woman left in the world. Women get up and running, let‘s find water, food, shelter, safety. Men- hey so this means we get to repopulate the world right? We should get to procreating. There‘s a lot of that going on. This book makes me think of that. 👇🏼 12mo
Reggie Thanks for the rec @Centique ! 12mo
Centique Im so glad you enjoyed it. Youre right, i dont think it needed to end that way. Maybe if her anger fermented into a more realistic bit of vengeance - something messier, with consequences. 12mo

Reggie @Centique I thought Theresa might end up with Carol‘s husband. And that surprise!!! They were also having an affair. I loved the way Luke was like this bumbling butterfly throughout the story. I liked Hugh being in Pauline‘s life. How Harry was not a consideration. I just felt she robbed Theresa of some kind of closure. (edited) 12mo
Reggie @Centique and for a hot minute because it was the end of summer and Pauline keeps describing the combine out in the field, I thought Theresa might throw herself in front of it, maybe throw Luke in front of it to punish Morris, or maybe trick Morris into taking a closer look and then pushing him in front of it. Hell, even getting Carol drunk and having her lie in front of it. Those would be different books though. Lol 12mo
Tamra I‘ve this TBR too long 😅 12mo

I drove down 4hrs to my hometown to have Thanksgiving tomorrow. Im only halfway through the book but I am enthralled, partly because it‘s narrated by Divina Porter (bottom right) who made me feel like I was laying in the arms of Joan Collins as she reads me a book, her arm around me tapping long red nails against my shoulder until she has to turn a page. And I don‘t think I would notice it if I was reading it instead of listening but Lively 👇🏼

Reggie likes the word desultory, which I would pronounce dee-s-uhl-torrie but Alexis Carrington/Joan Collins/Davina Porter pronounces dezzle-torrie and I get a kick out of it every time! I probably won‘t be in tomorrow but Happy Thanksgiving to every one who participates and happy whatever day to everyone else! 🤎🦃🤎 12mo
Ruthiella Happy Thanksgiving to you Reggie and your companion Alexis/Joan/Davina! 😂 I loved the two previous books I‘ve read from Lively and I will try to make this title the next one DEFINITELY on audio! 12mo
Reggie @Ruthiella it‘s my first Lively and I love the language, the inner speak, the lay of the land and how she combines it all. Happy Thanksgiving! 🍁 12mo

batsy "made me feel like I was laying in the arms of Joan Collins"—now that's how to sell a narrator! 12mo
CarolynM Happy Thanksgiving, Reggie. Hope you enjoy your family time. I‘ve read a few Livelys (and collected a few more) but not this one yet. She‘s a great writer. I‘m with the narrator on how to pronounce “desultory”😆 12mo
AmyG Wishing you a very Happy Thanksgiving 🦃🍁🍽 12mo
Librarybelle I‘m actually listening to a book right now with Porter as the narrator, and I keep thinking of Claire from the Outlander series, because Porter narrates that series. Never thought of Joan Collins, but I have caught myself thinking “why is Claire Fraser trying to solve a murder?” I love your review! 12mo
Rissreads I haven‘t read Lively yet. She‘s on my list! 12mo
Mollyanna Happy Thanksgiving Reggie! Davina is one of my favorite narrators, I‘ll have to put this audio on my list. 12mo
TheBookgeekFrau Happy Thanksgiving 🦃🧡 12mo
rwmg Hope you had a great American Thanksgiving. Desultory is one of those words I know but have never actually said out loud so I'm not sure how it's supposed to be pronounced. My best guess would be de-sul-teh-ry, stressed on the first syllable. (edited) 12mo
Reggie Thanks @BarbaraBB I just finished today and it was wonderful. 12mo
Reggie @batsy even today when I was listening to it on the way back I was chuckling because of that wonderful accent. I think you‘d like this book. 12mo
Reggie @CarolynM I have decided to say dezzletory for the rest of my life. You have something to look forward to. I finished it today. It was great. 12mo
Reggie @AmyG @TheBookgeekFrau Hope you ladies had lots of turkey! 12mo
Reggie @Rissreads I really liked her writing. It was delicious. 12mo
Reggie @Mollyanna I am not really an audiobook person unless I‘m on a long road trip. But now when I road-trip I want to kinda look up other stuff Davina has read for. 12mo
Reggie @Librarybelle I know what your talking about. Even though the main character‘s name is Pauline I kept thinking Alexis Carrington was telling me things about her daughter‘s husband. Lol Thanks! 12mo
Reggie @rwmg thanks! I did. I got to hangout with my grandma. I have convinced myself to pronounce it dezzletory and dezzletory might become my new password in life! Lol 12mo

I absolutely loved this - its short but i read it very slowly to savour it. Penelope Lively does atmosphere and descriptions of women‘s inner lives so well! Pauline is a divorced woman in late middle age. She is working as a copy editor from one of a pair of rural cottages she owns during a very hot summer. Her daughter and son in law & child are spending the summer in the other cottage. Pauline gets to see tensions rise ⬇️

Centique in their relationship bringing her to recall her own history. There are some perfect sentences in this book. She captures the way events from your past live with you as you age, you can almost reach out and touch the “you” of decades ago, who remains in a pivotal moment, feeling everything afresh. 13mo
Reggie Wow! Stacked. 13mo

Reggie Good, I got so much reading done last week cause I took off 2 extra days. Also, I deleted Twitter from my phone which helped. Lol. Now I‘m on my weekend again so looking forward to so more reading. How bout you, Paula? 13mo
Centique @Reggie yes you have been reading heaps! All good here. Had some bad news about His Elderliness with something inoperable but hes currently stable - so enjoying the calm before the storm as much as possible 💕 13mo
Reggie Oh, I‘m sorry. 💜I hope he stays as comfortable as he possibly can be. My grandma broke her femur like 2 months ago and the DAY she got home she was taken to the hospital for chest pain and trouble breathing for a blockage in her heart. She‘s currently on her 6th life. She‘s fine now but who knows how long it‘ll last. We‘re all going home for Thanksgiving just in case it‘s her last. (edited) 13mo
Centique @Reggie oh the poor thing! Its so nice that youll all be there to see her at Thanksgiving. 💕 I hope she enjoys it. 13mo
Reggie @Centique btw the guy who wrote Beetlejuice was Michael McDowell and he wrote The Elementals. If you just by chance get an itch for horror, I think you would like it. We did a buddy read on here years ago with Cindy and everyone liked it. He died in 1999. 13mo
andrew61 Great review, Paula. I have this somewhere and love PLs writing, so I will dig it out soon. Best wishes to you and @Reggie. we have elderly family issues at mo, which, when I talk to friends of my age, is a common difficulty of juggling life. I still miss periodically hearing the two of you on jenny podcast. Take care. 13mo
Tamra I have this one stacked - now I‘m anxious to read it! 13mo
batsy Lovely review, Paula. My love to you and @Reggie and your families re: ill family members. My mother was also recently in hospital but is back home now... We seem to be all in the "making the most of the time we have and taking it day by day" stage, it looks like. Never easy ❤️ 13mo
Reggie @andrew61 I miss Jenny a lot. Not many podcasts cover the breadth of reading she did or the variety of readers she talked to. Take care as well. 13mo
Reggie @batsy I‘m sorry about your mom. Hope she stays comfortable and you get all the time you can with her. ❤️ 13mo

Centique @batsy oh gosh Suba, i can only imagine how hard that has been. I hope your mother gains strength and has many many good days to come 🙏💜 13mo
Jeg Best wishes to you and hope all goes well with your dad. I fear I'm becoming the aging parent I hope I have someone as caring as you to look out for me. ❤️❤️❤️ 13mo
Centique @Jeg thank you Joy - that is the nicest thing anyone could ever say 💕 🥰 13mo
Rissreads I‘m sorry to hear about your dad being so unwell, such a tough time for you. I lost my Dad in March and miss him everyday. 12mo
Centique @Rissreads oh Nerissa that is so sad! Im so sorry that youve had such sadness. Parents leave such a gap, such a constant missing of someone we were so bonded to 😢 12mo
Reggie Ok, so I‘m listening to this as I drive down south to be with family forThanksgiving and it reminds me of Marguerite Duras. And the narrator Davina Porter is exquisite. She takes the already beautiful language and makes it divine sounding. 12mo
Centique @Reggie oh im so glad! Im going to have to get that audio version so i can bathe in the language like that too😍 I hope your thanksgiving is really good. We‘ve been having a spate of family illnesses (not His Elderliness- hes stable currently) so definitely having family on my heart - which is a thanksgiving thing i guess? Love and peace to you and yours Xxx 12mo

4⭐️ Lively likes doing flashbacks, revealing one tiny bit at a time. I‘m not a big fan of that when I read her other work Spiderweb, but it works well with this one. Pauline‘s marriage was marred by infidelity, and she now watches the same is happening with her daughter‘s marriage. I love the surprise at the end; it felt like I was being rewarded with a candy for finishing the book.

A short but exquisite read crammed with beautiful writing and sharp observations. Perhaps focused mostly on the boundless love of a mother for her adult daughter it also covers passion, adultery, friendship and family. The remote cottages of Worlds End are fully realised along with some of the contradictions of country life. And whilst very much of its time, the mid 1990s, its themes of betrayal and revenge are timeless.

Pauline remembers the first time she saw Teresa with Luke. She walks down the hospital ward between a double rank of legs - legs ranged carelessly on beds, sticking out below nighties and dressing-gowns. Brown legs, black legs, pale pink legs. An acreage of female flesh, casually exposed, legs, thighs and whole breasts into which are tucked the furry heads of babies. No-one is modest or prudish here, there is a frank acceptance of what is going on

How she can write, Penelope Lively.
Like Moon Tiger, this is a book about a woman, looking back at her life.
Pauline shares her house one Summer with her daughter, her husband and their child. Watching her daughter, Pauline remembers her own marriage. She wishes she could protect her daughter from making the same mistakes she did.
A very intelligent read in my opinion. Highly recommended.

Maybe even better than Moon Tiger! Penelope Lively is so good at bringing leitmotifs back and back and back in slightly different ways, and this book was full of subtle variations on common themes (motherhood, marriage, infidelity, divorce) which made me think about things I‘ve read about lots of times in fresh ways. The ending was just the right amount shocking - unexpected but not so out of nowhere it was silly.

Read the last 60 pages in a fever pitch late into the night. It's not a thriller, but a slow-burn that picks up near the end. Strong interior examination of motherhood and fidelity--a question of how long civility can stave off primal instinct. Fav line: "Because in the fullness of time she would have recovered" (114).
