In Sunlight or In Shadow: Stories Inspired by the Paintings of Edward Hopper
In Sunlight or In Shadow: Stories Inspired by the Paintings of Edward Hopper | ed. Lawrence Block
A truly unprecedented literary achievement by author and editor Lawrence Block, a newly-commissioned anthology of seventeen superbly-crafted stories inspired by the paintings of Edward Hopper, including Jeffery Deaver, Joyce Carol Oates, Stephen King, Lee Child, and Robert Olen Butler, among many others. "Edward Hopper is surely the greatest American narrative painter. His work bears special resonance for writers and readers, and yet his paintings never tell a story so much as they invite viewers to find for themselves the untold stories within." So says Lawrence Block, who has invited seventeen outstanding writers to join him in an unprecedented anthology of brand-new stories: In Sunlight or In Shadow. The results are remarkable and range across all genres, wedding literary excellence to storytelling savvy. Contributors include Stephen King, Joyce Carol Oates, Robert Olen Butler, Michael Connelly, Megan Abbott, Craig Ferguson, Nicholas Christopher, Jill D. Block, Joe R. Lansdale, Justin Scott, Kris Nelscott, Warren Moore, Jonathan Santlofer, Jeffery Deaver, Lee Child, and Lawrence Block himself. Even Gail Levin, Hoppers biographer and compiler of his catalogue raisone, appears with her own first work of fiction, providing a true account of art theft on a grand scale and told in the voice of the country preacher who perpetrated the crime. In a beautifully produced anthology as befits such a collection of acclaimed authors, each story is illustrated with a quality full-color reproduction of the painting that inspired it. Illustrated with 17 full color plates, one for each chapter

A collection of stories, each based on a painting by Edward Hopper 1882-1967. This painting is called Automat (food/drink vending machine of early 20th century). Fascinating stories🧡

rwmg Barbara Pym has quite a few scenes in automats.

I don't know the author, but I do like Hopper's pictures. They are immediately recognisable and give such play to the imagination.

I‘m in love with the concept, and there are some great names on the list, but somehow this has still been languishing on my TBR for a few years.

The concept of this book of short stories is fascinating to me: each author choosing an Edward Hopper painting (shown at the beginning of each story) and writing a short story about it. While I only really enjoyed several of these stories, the concept kept me fascinated, constantly flipping to the painting as the story detailed it. Includes Stephen King, Joyce Carol Oates, Lee Child, and Megan Abbott among others. Read for #Booked2023

Cinfhen Cool concept, indeed!!! And some great authors in the collaboration 💕 2y

I may love to plan reading as much as I love reading and owning books. I came across this YouTube video where she talks about her strategy that enables her to read more. So I upped my game, got a Trello account, and now have an amazing visual reading tracker. I can see what I‘m currently reading, what‘s next, and create labels so I can keep track of reading challenges. Just another great way to avoid work during the day 😂 Youtube link below.

JamieArc Anyone else use something like this? 2y
Ruthiella I‘m pretty sure I‘ve seen other Littens mention Trello. I too spent quite a lot of time THINKING about reading rather than actually reading. 😆 2y
dabbe Looks interesting! I currently use a spreadsheet, but I might have to give Trello a try! Thanks! 😊💚🤗 2y

This book could have kept going! There are so many more fabulous Edward Hopper paintings that could have inspired more great stories. This was a fantastic collection, combining two things I love--Edward Hopper and short stories. #storyaday2023

Short stories inspired by Edward Hopper's paintings. The German edition is named after Hopper's most famous painting Nighthawks and therefore qualifies... 🌉🌚

Mehso-so

I'm a huge fan of Edward Hopper's, and I loved the idea of a collection inspired by his work. Unfortunately, this didn't quite live up to my hopes. There were some brilliant pieces in there, but, overall, the stories either tried a bit too hard, or not hard enough. Lawrence Block's "Autumn at the Automat" was by far my favorite, so much so that I wish he'd undertaken the project as his own collection, rather than editing it as an anthology.

Bailedbailed

I kept going back and forth about whether to finish or to bail, but finally decided to bail because I never looked forward to picking up this book. Out of 17 stories I read 6: 3 good, 3 not good. The ones I liked were by Stephen King, Joyce Carol Oates, and Joe R. Lansdale.

First two stories were duds. Stephen King's story was good - clever and very short - so I kept reading. The one in the picture was excellent! I had never heard of this author before, but now his books will probably be finding their way to my TBR list. 📚

Now, time to see if any of the other stories are good. 📖

This seemed like an interesting concept - stories inspired by Edward Hopper's paintings - but I'm not impressed after reading the first two stories. I'm going to try the one by Stephen King next and if it's no good, I'm going to bail.

I got this book for my incredible better-half, the marvelously talented artist, @BookBabe ☺😍! Edward Hopper has been an influence on her fine art career, and when we visited the Edward Hopper House in Nyack, NY, the folks in charge were taken aback with enthusiasm over how well her brush can work off his style. I think she'll like this one 😉👍🏻.

A gem of a collection. Moody, engaging, and roiling in mystery. I wrote a more in-depth review over at The Chicago Review of Books if you're interested: https://chireviewofbooks.com/2016/12/21/in-which-17-writers-bring-edward-hoppers...

MrBook *Love* this idea! @BookBabe showed some of her artwork to the folks who run the Edward Hopper House in Nyack, NY, and they loved what she's done 😊👍🏻. 8y

I loved this book. Edward Hopper has always been one of my favorite artists and the marriage of paintings and stories in this anthology is wonderful. The stories range from scary to sweet, but all are intriguing. There were a couple I didn't want to end and couple that I'm still thinking about today. Art lovers, short story lovers and those who just enjoy fine writing will want to read this book. I received a free copy of this book for review.
