This was a fun fluff read, although it did get a little repetitive ("I think he likes me. Ohno he is talking to her so I guess he doesn't like me after all. Oh wait, I misunderstood! He DOES like me!") and felt like it could have either been shorter or delved more into some of the side issues. Overall enjoyable but not life-changing.

Andrew65 @TheAromaofBooks Self isolation, but as principal of school schools are still open. Told today Shutting at end if Friday but still to stay open to the children of a range of people who are helping keep society and the fight against Coronavirus. So will be business as usual. 5y

And I see a lot of people bemoaning the fact that their elderly relatives don't want to stay in, but I think a lot of that is due to those older folks not being as comfortable staying connected via technology - that personal interaction is important to them. Uncertainty and isolation make a tough combination! 5y

Ack I LOVE THESE BOOKS! Ransome does it again with another fun, lighthearted adventure about kids, families, birds, and boats. I've been meaning to read this next installment, but #MarchUnshelving inspired me to pick it up next. This is definitely one I am keeping, but happy to have another book read from my own shelves.

Finished this one yesterday with many a mixed feeling. There are a lot of things to love about this book, but a strong plot definitely isn't one of them. It's a beautifully written but incredibly meandering book with characters that somehow always seem distant. I wasn't bored reading this book, but it was also a lot more work to read than it should have been. ⬇️

TheAromaofBooks @robinb - Thank you! I struggled with rating this one. There was so much that I really loved about it, but overall it just felt like a little too much. I don't think that a person should have to read a 500 page book twice just to understand what's happening lol I also struggled because a lot of the “why“ for character action was “for LOVE“ except the characters “in love“ had only talked to each other like... once. So I didn't completely buy it lol 5y

TheAromaofBooks @robinb - it was frustrating because there is so much good there. The descriptions and world-building are lavish and magical, and Morgenstern can turn a phrase in a way that really grabs you. But it was a cotton candy kind of book - at the end of the day, there just wasn't much substance to the story. Oh well. Keep it on your list for sometime when you really have time to immerse yourself into a book!! 5y

I originally got it from the library because I wasn't sure if I was going to like it, but I think that I will buy it someday for the reread. 5y

Finally finished my February #bookspin pick!! If you enjoy Breakwell's social media, you'll like this book. It got repetitive in parts (personally, I think his perfect writing length is his weekly newsletter) but was still good fun. Breakwell makes me laugh a lot for free, so I am always happy to order his books as a thank you if nothing else!

TheAromaofBooks Favorite quote: “If your child falls off the bed and hits their head, but might wonder if you need to take your child to the emergency room. You don't. If it were a real emergency, you would know, because you would be on your way to the emergency room instead of wondering if you could keep your child home to save some money. The Intuitionist: A Novel | Colson Whitehead

so-so

Sometimes a book makes me feel kind of dumb, and this was one of those books. I never really "got" what Whitehead was driving at. Is this some kind of allegory? (I'm terrible at both identifying and understanding allegories, being more the straight-shooter type haha) The story is very slow moving, with sometimes confusing jumps in time and characters. (Who is the screaming man?) I wanted to know what was going to happen, but never felt connected⬇️

It's incredibly rare for it take me more than a day and a half to read a book this length, and it took me almost four days to get through this one, and not even because I was reading other things - just because I never really felt interested in picking it back up. Not a horrible read, but not one I particularly liked. Still planning to read The Underground Railroad next week to give Whitehead another try. 5y

TheAromaofBooks @Suet624 - I found a description of this book listing it as “speculative fiction“ and I think that may have been part of my problem with it. I would have liked it better if the setting was either more significantly different from our world, or was just straight historical fiction. Still interested to give him another try, though. Which of his books have you found to be more hits than misses? 5y

This was exactly what I wanted it to be: a quick, fluffy, happy read with likable characters. There were times when Emily felt a little slow on the uptake, but overall a fun story. GR shows a sequel coming out this fall, and I actually think there are other characters to explore so that could be nifty as well.

Set in the not-too-distant future, society looks very similar to today. Unsurprisingly, people are more dependent on their cell phones than ever, especially on an app called Lux, which analyzes every situation for you and tells you the optimal choice for every question - what to eat, where to shop, when to leave for an appointment. When Rory gets accepted to the most prestigious high school in the country, she's thrilled, especially when she ⬇️

TheAromaofBooks finds out that her mother (who died when Rory was born) also attended the same school. Things take a darker twist, though, as Rory begins to discover things about the school, a secret society, and (of course) Lux. While some aspects of this story were predictable YA/scifi/dystopian kind of stuff, overall I really loved the concept of a society that has done its best to quash that quiet voice in our heads & replace it with 100% rational choices ⬇ 5y

TheAromaofBooks thanks to technology. This book felt like it could easily have strayed too far into religious territory, but kept the balance well. Overall a fun read for its genre.
