The Gene: An Intimate History | Siddhartha Mukherjee

I have been feeling very discouraged by the bi-partisan attacks on science -- liberals who (rightly) denounce Trump on climate change, and then claim vaccines cause autism. Conservatives who (rightly) defend GMO crops and then claim evolution is "just a theory."

My goal for this year is to read 12 Non-Fiction Science Books to protect me against the extremist partisan anti-science Crusaders.

SuperPunkNinja 👏👏👏 8y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa #ImWithYou I'm with you on that one, the conspiracy theorists and my religious freedom trumps your science fact groups drive me completely crazy. 8y

Julsmarshall That is a great goal! 8y
CocoReads Noble goal! I have a soon to be graduating Biology major who sends me outraged texts regarding the climate change deniers. Among other issues but that's her biggie. I need to read more science non fiction books (and nonfiction in general actually) so go you! 8y
arcadianlife Can you share the books you are choosing to read. I would love to join you! 8y
JenniferJarrell Admirable goal. 8y
Yossarian @arcadianlife The Gene is the first one. I'll let you know as I pick the others. 8y
Hooked_on_books As a science person, I applaud you! I am a liberal and have no idea why people are so agitated by GMOs. Food has been genetic modified, just not in a lab, for centuries! And all the anti-vaccine science has been discredited: they work and don't cause autism! And here's a great climate change book: (edited) 8y
Yossarian @Hooked_on_books I think there's some form of argument where if you yell "Monsanto!" loud enough and enough times you win and prove that organic food is healthier. 8y

I have to put my phone away. I can't fight trolls and I can't reason with bigots on FB and Twitter. Thank you Litsy for understanding how I feel. I know y'all are probably feeling very similar. I love you all and I can't thank you enough for being a safe space for me. I'm going to read, watch tennis, cuddle with my cat, and hope when I wake something good has happened. #resist ✊🏼

Born.A.Reader I'm sure I'm not the only one that's noticed, as of late, that it seems the majority of us Littens are against the horrible happenings in the US. That we are intelligent enough to realize hate, bigotry and racism when we see it. ...unlike the half of my country that I'm ashamed to say, elected a certain person... I come to Litsy to be cheered by all of your postive posts and thoughts. So thank you, everyone. 😊😊 8y
BarbaraTheBibliophage You are not alone. 😘 8y
Joybishoptx I pretty much stay off Facebook because it just depresses me. Take care of yourself 💕💕💕 8y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa Take care of yourself tonight, you need to refresh for another day. But let me share some good news with you... I live in a small town in center(ish) PA, Trump-land galore.... but my library hosted a Social Justice discussion about the Coates book and had more people show up than they had seats for...I estimate over 100 people came. The organizer joked that he didn't realize that many people lived in the town. So even in Trumplandia, people... 8y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa ...are starting to seek out others that have similar problems with the way things are going. I hope that helps you feel a bit better and less alone. I know it did me. #ImWithYou (edited) 8y
JSW We are in this together and you don't have to do it all yourself. Rest. We've got this for you when you're ready to come back. ❤❤ 8y
Texreader Nice artwork. Reminds me of this quote: In Germany, they came first for the Communists, And I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Communist; And then they came for the trade unionists, And I didn't speak up because I wasn't a trade unionist; And then they came for the Jews, And I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Jew; And then . . . they came for me ... 8y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa I'll also say that I'm old enough to remember that when I discussed things like marriage equality in my little corner of the world it was given the side-eye during my college years. But little by little the discussion shifted over time as more & more people began to come out, not out as in being LGBTQ, but out in support of supporting them. Sometimes it takes knowing a bunch of people agree with your secret thoughts to enable you to express them. 8y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa ...so take your time, refresh yourself, and then go right back to saying what you think is right. You might never convince the other side, but there are plenty of people in the middle watching both sides now and deciding who makes more sense to them. You never know who might be influenced by your speaking your truth. 👍 8y

Tamarity I treated myself by deactivating my fb account and it feels soooo good! I just check CBC occasionally (because I'm Canadian) to stay updated. I kept fb msg so I can stay in touch with friends and family. 8y
kspenmoll Sending you energy & just know so many feel the same at different times - the ACLU filing & court stay tonight is such a source of hope- sorry if this is quick & disjointed; tired. Hugs to you & all responding here. #resist 8y
ReadingSusan I am right they'd with you! I deleted Facebook and Twitter from my phone last Friday and only added them today which was terrible timing on my part. I am hoping you had a relaxing time tonight and are refreshed and recharged. Don't feel bad about needing to unplug for awhile. #selfcare (edited) 8y
AmyG It's inspiring to be in a community of well-read, informed people. Knowledge is power. My thoughts with all who do not feel safe in this country. There are many good people who support you and are willing to fight for the rights of all. #resist 8y
Weaponxgirl Take care of yourself and try to remember that those people are very loud because they know that they haven't got a leg to stand on in the end. 8y
Nuwanda Tried to talk sense to a cousin of mine today. She claims to want conversation because she feels attacked as a conservative, but then she told me today to keep my opinions on my own thread, deleted her original post where I commented, and then put up a post saying, "You can't fix stupid." I silently agreed. Stay strong! We are here to support each other for the long haul! 8y
[DELETED] 1409720085 I love Litsy as a safe place. I don't participate in a lot of social media but I live in a very red state so I feel a bit isolated sometimes. Just trying to keep spreading my love. 8y
Suet624 These comments are so beautiful. This is going to be a marathon and one by one we will take our place in the race. Rest now. Your time/action will come and you'll know it by its urgency. 8y

HEY EVERYONE THIS COUNTRY HAS TURNED INTO A FASCIST STATE IN FOUR DAYS BECAUSE OF ALL THIS OPPRESSIVE EXECUTIVE OVERREACH FROM DONNIE so I've been reading this book to calm me down a little. Am so anxious. It's a cute book, and mimics francophone style. Bandette is the most adorable criminal you will ever meet. She will help you forget about the flaming dumpster fire that is happening in this country. For like a few minutes, at least.

SuperPunkNinja Hugs! ❤❤❤ 8y

Today, I'm putting aside what I'm #CurrentlyReading to read this comfort book. I will not listen to the radio, or watch the news. I also won't do #24in48 😞, because I'm going to a march tomorrow. After I reread Speak for the millionth time, I'll do a Calvin and Hobbes marathon, while drinking hot cocoa. Read one of your favorite books today!

Riveted_Reader_Melissa And just as an aside......let the impeachment proceedings start date odds-makers start taking their bets. The more ammo he gives, the more I can see the Republicans in congress preferring Pence. It's going to be a long 4 years. 8y

Just hit this quote and it hit me back. Celie decides to use her anger to build, rather than hurt-- even though she has every right to be angry.

It's easy to feel powerless these days. I'm feeling #overit, but I know I'm not alone. #imwithyou

"In the beginning I was so young and such a stranger to myself I hardly existed. I had to go out into the world and see it and hear it and react to it, before I knew at all who I was, what I was, what I wanted to be."

I've not been very active here, Littens, because my head and heart have been reeling. I bought this book to nurture my self. I will heal, I will listen, and I will fight. We shall overcome. #overit #imwithyou

So...it's been almost a week. There are a lot of us who didn't like the outcome. There are some who are still trying to process it. Samwise Gamgee puts my feelings into words better than I can. There IS still good in this world, and it IS worth fighting for. We stand up, dust ourselves off, and get back to work.
