Mehso-so

I honestly forgot how slow this book is, not to mention a lot of Paul's internal monologue which at times confusing and other times unnecessary but considering he's delirious for at least half of the book creating a back n forth between delusions and reality, I'm like meh.

Annie is an iconic character- sometimes the monster is closer than we think but as iconic as she is, the book just didn't work for me even in the reread.

Pickpick

I love Stephen king. There‘s nothing more cozy than a rainy/snowy day and sitting on the couch reading a King novel. While I‘ve read a couple of these stories before, most of them I never have. And these are OG King!

Like any short story compilation, there are hits and misses. It was fun reading the ones that‘ve been made into movies (Lawnmower Man I had to look up, because that movie‘s only similarity is the title. Apparently King…

Lauranahe sued them to have his name removed from the title because of that!). And, like any old school King, there are some slurs and offensive language we don‘t use any more. I just take a breath, cringe, and move on.

They‘re good, classic Stephen King. Understand the time it was written, navigate the offensive stuff, and buckle in for the ride. And if you‘re chonky like me, try not to be offended at his clear disdain of fat people.

I still like this book, but I noticed some issues that didn‘t bother me when I first read it. In The Body, the use of Gordie‘s short stories is completely unnecessary; it just makes the story longer than it needs to be. The Breathing Method, about pregnancy and birth, is just odd. I‘m not sure it needed the framing with old men telling stories in a creepy club — what exactly that club is is left hanging. #audiowalk

It‘s getting chilly again. I had to wear a jacket for the first part of my walk. It‘s been a long time since I read The Body, and I‘m not sure how much I remember is from the movie. I cannot picture these kids as anyone other than the actors who played them. It was jarring, though, to hear Gordie say, “F**k the World Trade Center” given 9/11, which hadn‘t happened when this story was written. #audiowalk

Of course it‘s a pick. I don‘t think I‘ve ever read a Stephen King book I didn‘t like…or at least that I couldn‘t find aspects of to like. Ostensibly a whodunit (to a degree), this book is also an examination of the human condition, the lies we tell ourselves & others, the emotional toll of working on death row, racism, the abuse of power, & wonder & hope & the possibility in the seemingly impossible. King just knows how to tell a good story.

Love, love, loved this just as much the 2nd time around! ❤️ (I rarely re-read books.)
It‘s long, but so worth it.

Today I started The Body — the second novella in this collection to be made into an excellent movie, Stand By Me. (The Apt Pupil movie was just okay.) There‘s one of adult Gordie‘s short stories inserted into the story so far, and I didn‘t remember that at all. Not sure of the necessity of it. #audiowalk
