Lisey's Story
Lisey's Story: A Novel | Stephen King
Lisey Debusher Landon lost her husband, Scott, two years ago, after a twenty-five-year marriage of the most profound and sometimes frightening intimacy. Scott was an award-winning, bestselling novelist and a very complicated man. Early in their relationship, before they married, Lisey had to learn from him about books and blood and bools. Later, she understood that there was a place Scott went -- a place that both terrified and healed him, that could eat him alive or give him the ideas he needed in order to live. Now it's Lisey's turn to face Scott's demons, Lisey's turn to go to Boo'ya Moon. What begins as a widow's effort to sort through the papers of her celebrated husband becomes a nearly fatal journey into the darkness he inhabited. Perhaps King's most personal and powerful novel, Lisey's Story is about the wellsprings of creativity, the temptations of madness, and the secret language of love.

Book 9

I listened to Lisey's Story by Stephen King. I knew it was going to be dark, but it was much weirder than I'd expected. It was a long fantasy with other worlds. Not my style, but it might be yours. ⭐⭐

Willing this stuffy summer heat away with some chill by the King.

Would recognize his style in a heartbeat. Despite the crassness and the gore, his characters are always so deep, so real. A master storyteller if there is one.

Bailedbailed

Two separate evenings I dove in and tried. I simply can‘t wade in enough to lose myself to King magic. It could be there, but I only felt a strain. It didn‘t grab the gentle reader by the hand and pull them in. I still long for his earlier writing that was inescapably compelling and terrifying. Kind of like there was an early period of Bob Dylan that set the stage for future disappointments. Love me some good old King.

I‘ve had this book since 2006, but have never taken off the dust jacket. What a cool cover!

BoleyBooks I adore this cover too. I read the book years ago and I recently finished watching the screen adaptation with Julianne Moore. I thought watching the series might help me like this story more. I usually LOVE strange stories, but I was short of fully connecting with this one. 6mo

Double post day 😁 I finally got a bingo last month. I was so close to two.

Lisey‘s Story is low on my favorite King book list, but it was very intense and had straight up scary moments at the end. Now I get to watch the mini series 💃🏿

TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!! Fabulous month!!! 7mo
Reggie I think because I have people in my family whose personality you really never know who is going to show up and the husband‘s dad would change into that evil thing every so often that‘s why this one stands out for me. Lol 6mo

FINALLY finished this door stopper! Definitely not my favorite Stephen King. I felt it was waaaayyyy longer than it needed to be and the strange baby-like talk through out got pretty annoying. That being sad the parts dealing with Scott‘s childhood and all the scenes in Boo Ya Moon were terrifying and brilliant (people under sheets staring off into water is just….😳🥺🙈). I also loved the ending which was actually pretty sweet. 🌟🌟🌟

I read this years ago when first published (translation: I‘ve forgotten all of it!) and am listening to the audio for a reread. I‘m a big SK fan, but I‘m only 20% in and already so over the “Scott talk!” The whole “smucking” thing might have been cute if mentioned a couple of times, but on its 47th usage—not so much!! Enough already! 🤦‍♀️ The cover is cool, though. I do have this edition.

MayJasper That cover is really rather wonderful. 7mo
CindyMyLifeIsLit @MayJasper I know! I bought a second copy of the book just to get that cover. 😁 7mo

MayJasper I understand completely 😊 7mo
JenlovesJT47 Since you listened to the audiobook, I‘m curious how you pronounce Lisey. I plan on reading it soon and I hate when I‘m not sure how to pronounce something that shows up a million times throughout the book. 7mo
CindyMyLifeIsLit @JenlovesJT47 The narrator pronounced it “Lee-see.” I think there‘s a line in the book that addresses it. 7mo

Stephen King‘s version of a love story. But being SK, it definitely doesn‘t belong in the romance section. I‘ll be thinking of Lisey and Scott for a while after finishing this. One thing, though, I felt that their special word “smuck/smucking” was overused in this novel 😂.

After 20-yo son reads this, we plan to watch the series…if there‘s time before he goes back to school.

DivineDiana So nice to share a read with your son! Never heard of TV series. 🤔 7mo
ValerieAndBooks @DivineDiana it‘s currently on Apple+ TV, releasing a new episode weekly. Not sure how many episodes total. By the time son‘s done reading, I‘m sure they‘ll all be there! 7mo
DivineDiana That is one that I don‘t have. 🤷🏼‍♀️ 7mo
ValerieAndBooks @DivineDiana it‘s so hard to have them all! And it gets 💸💸💸💸💸. Seems like there‘s always a new streaming channel 🤪. I have this one only because it came temporarily free when I got my new iPhone some ago. Not sure if I‘ll keep it when they start charging. 7mo

Stephen King‘s version of a love story? Yes please! I really enjoyed this one. I acquired an older copy last year and decided to tackle it in case I decide to watch the Apple TV adaptation. I stayed up a little past the pupper‘s bedtime to finish it up.

Lifeisasnap I went off SK for decades because i scared myself as a little kid reading Cujo and PET Semetary! Lisey‘s Story is the first book i went to to get back into the SK reads. I‘m glad I did. It was so different and yet, so Stephen King. Glad you like it too! 7mo
Cortg @Lifeisasnap I honestly haven‘t read many SK books. My first was 11/22/63 and since then I‘ve read The Shining, 1/2 of the Dark Towers series, Gwendy‘s Button Box and The Institute. There are quite a few more I‘d like to read and some that I‘ll pass on because, quite frankly, I‘m afraid. 7mo
Lifeisasnap @Cortg i loved 11/22/63! Did you see the Tv series of it starring James Franco? Yeah, a lot of his books are scary!! 7mo
Cortg @Lifeisasnap OMG! I remember wanting to watch it and completely forgot about it! I don‘t watch much TV so I have to make notes of things to watch. I‘m going to try to track it down! 7mo

Because of the new series based on this book, son (he‘s 20) & I decided to buddy read this! (Last summer we buddy-read The Stand).

Any of you doing the same? We want to finish before we start watching.

although son has several SKs, he didn‘t have this one, so I ordered from ThriftBooks because he prefers HC editions. When the order went through, it said “large print edition “. I was like, oh no! But it ended up actually being regular print.

vivastory I've heard great things about this book. I'll be curious to hear your opinion 7mo
candc320 I‘m doing the exact same thing! I always like to try to read a book before seeing the tv show/movie if I can, and I love me some Stephen King! 7mo

ValerieAndBooks @Cathythoughts Stephen King is usually a great escape read, definitely...albeit scary (mostly)! After I read this, definitely curious how they adapt the series from this. 7mo
Reggie It‘s been more than 15 years since I‘ve read this but there are things in here I‘ve thought about as recently as last month. Hope you like it! 7mo
ValerieAndBooks @Reggie it started out slow (so much leading up to when Scott got shot) and I‘m not sure yet just what all is going on but I‘m 100% along for the ride! 7mo

Balibee146 Read it fairly recently... The baby talk, self referencing personal coded sayings etc were annoying particularly in the first third. I kept going and ultimately enjoyed it... Gets better as it goes. Not a vintage King for me, or one I'll return to frequently, but worth a read. 2y

phantomx I read Lisey's Story in high school, and it's one of the few stories I can remember vividly--somewhat like a sweet chill. It opened my eyes to understanding love and grief, dangerous obsession and salvation from past mistakes that are rooted in a family. 2y

Seekingtardis I have no idea what this is!! Would you mind explaining? I‘m always looking for audiobook formats. 3y
ErinSueMreads Absolutely! It‘s like audible but better! It costs the same as audible each month (15) for one credit. You get to pick an audiobook to “buy” with your credit. This is where it gets good though. A portion of the money goes to the bookstore you designate rather than amazon. More goes back to the authors as well. There are loads of perks. Here is a referral code if you want to try it! http://libro.fm/referral?rf_code=lfm85681 @Seekingtardis 3y

I laughed, I cried, my heart raced, I got confused and reread pages, then understood like lightning. I don't know if I would call it horror, but it had its thriller like overtones. I found it a very unusual and I can definitely see it not being for everyone.

#theLiteraryLadies problem, every time I sit down to read one of the kids has run off with my purple pen! I'm really enjoying it, hoping to have time to finish it before grad school starts up again

So I got to thinking about what was underneath the jacket, and have come across this! A secret hidden beneath the cover, a time stamp in history as a gift from my mother. What a lovely surprise :)

Also proof of how long it's been on my #TBR pile 🤣

I is for Intermezzo aka Metzie. She is Lisey's niece, and although she's not mentioned much, her name has stuck with me since I read this book. Plus, I love what this book looks like under the book cover. Sorry for the not so great lighting for this pic, but you get the general concept. 😁 I have the unpopular opinion on this book as well because I enjoyed it unlike most others I've talked to.

GarthRanzz That is one of the most beautiful, unjacketed books isn‘t it? I need to re-read this one as I really don‘t remember much about it. Lovely post! 4y
Reggie Really, I always get the impression that a lot of people liked it. There were a couple of women at my last casino that thought it was a nice love story. Maybe I just happened to talk the minority. I liked it. It was mothersmucking good. 4y
