Twins Kizzy and Lil are gathering mushrooms to make a celebration stew for their 17th birthday when they realize their Traveler family‘s caravan has been attacked and set on fire. All of the children are caught and enslaved, to be used at the whim of a cruel Settler Boyar (like a czar).

The first 2/3 were my favorite part, I didn‘t realize where the story was going or that it was a retelling, and that took a little away from it for me. Still 👍.

The book wasn't listed but I did suggest it.

While I liked the story as a whole, all of the characters felt one dimensional, and unbearable!

The governess spends the book alternately crying/sobbing at her new friend (the only other member of the staff we have named for the majority of the book) and massively obsessing over “perfect” children she has just met. While I understand it is a classic, it didn‘t really do as much as I hoped. I much prefer the Haunting of Bly Manor tv adaptation!

Wow! I would NEVER guess this is a novel by John Boyne, but boy is it fantastic🙌🏻 A gothic tale, London 1867- a governess is hired to watch two young children whose parents (and prior governesses) have befallen tragic accidents. Merricat and her sister Constance live a quiet, idyllic life with their infirm uncle Julian in a stately mansion at the edge of a village, which they tend to avoid as everyone shuns and hates them. Well maybe it‘s because six years ago the sisters‘ parents, brother, and aunt died of arsenic poisoning. I absolutely loved this gothic mystery that creeps up on the reader as slowly and stealthily as a cat on the prowl. Charming and subversive. 🖤☠️
