Catching up on reviews. Sanctuary was incredibly good! It deals with a difficult topic, immigration, but I feel that it's important that more people read this book.

Absolutely loved this historical fiction. Was still thinking about it on Friday, so stopped by the Devon witches memorial at lunchtime.

Corrag tells her story from her prison cell, as she waits for the snow to melt, so she can face her execution for witchcraft. A lone young woman, skilled in herbs and healing, and with a love of wild places, she found her home in Glen Coe, not long before the massacre. Beautiful writing, and how hard it‘s been

rockpools been to be a woman that doesn‘t ‘fit‘. A lovely read.

Also, this statistic amazed/horrified me. “Over the previous three hundred years [from ending of Witchcraft executions in 1735 in GB] it is estimated that over 100,000 women – mostly knowledgeable, independent, old or outspoken women – stood trial, accused of witchcraft.”

jenniferw88 Will hopefully get to finish this week but prioritising my #lmpbc book for May first! 4y

TrishB Mine arrived on Friday finally and I‘m definitely intending to read! I have also seen this sign on one of our holiday walks round Exeter. 4y
JennyM I‘ve only ever heard how good this one is. I must pick it up soon. Sounds so good! 4y
Caroline2 Excellent! 😀 I‘m so glad you enjoyed it. I started a massive chunkster a couple of weeks ago and I‘m still chugging through but this one is next on my list. 👍 4y
Susanita I‘m hoping my hold is available soon! 4y
rockpools @jenniferw88 Good plan! 4y
rockpools @TrishB Yay! I think you‘ll like this. I‘m working my Historical fiction muscles this month - building up my strength for SKP 💪 4y
rockpools @JennyM I do hope you enjoy it. It‘s one where I‘m excited to discover a new author - I‘d never heard of her before! 4y
rockpools @Caroline2 Are you a chunkster-reader by nature, Caroline? I‘m holding you (almost) entirely responsible for my recent chunkster shopping 😘 4y
rockpools @Susanita 🤞🤞 I do hope it‘s worth the wait. Feel like I‘m over-selling it here, but I really enjoyed it. 4y
rockpools I‘m adding this as #Sanctuary for #FourFoursin21 @Lauredhel - Glen Coe was Corrag‘s place of sanctuary and belonging, a place where no-one looked at her and spat ‘witch‘ 4y
Lauredhel Ooh, sounds interesting. The seventeenth month of 2020 has me out of the mood for grim chunksters ( I'm all about that happy ending / true love atm!) but this still sounds good. 4y
Caroline2 😆 no! Normally I‘m chunkster adverse! But I‘m trying to read more big books this year as some of my all time favourites are big. It just takes me so long to get through them and then the rest of my tbr piles keep glaring at me....!!! 😬 I can feel the pressure!!! 😆 🤦‍♀️ 🏃🏻‍♀️ 4y
rockpools @Lauredhel Ha! I‘ve been trying to put light, fun reads on the tbr forever (a good 17 months, perhaps!), and I just keep going back to grim & gloomy. Can‘t seem to help myself! 4y
rockpools @Caroline2 I am SO with you! On all of these things. I seem to have had an unforeseen book personality transplant this year though - buddy reads? Let me at ‘em! Chunksters? Sure, why not! What‘s the chunkiest you can find? Horror? Yep, I might even like it. Do you know, I think maybe I need a holiday!! 4y
squirrelbrain Ooh, you‘re bad! I deliberately didn‘t buy this as I knew I‘d be away on the book club date but now.... 🤔 4y
rockpools @squirrelbrain Eek. Sorry Helen. I didn‘t tag you and you never saw this 🤗 4y
Caroline2 😂 that‘s so funny!! Its good we‘re pushing ourselves with our reading tho. I love reading stuff I wouldn‘t normally read. Keeps us fresh eh!!! 😀 🌊 4y
Lauredhel I'm wrapping up the #fourfoursin21 #readingchallenge ! If you have completed it, please email me lauredhelhoyden@gmail.com with your list of reads by the end of the year. I'll randomly choose a winner, and email you your prize questionnaire. 3y
rockpools @Lauredhel Eek! I‘m so sorry- this is a challenge that got away from me this year - I don‘t think I‘m actually going to complete any of my challenges this year 😬. I managed 8/16 prompts. Thank you for hosting- I did really enjoy doing it 😘 3y
Lauredhel @rockpools never mind - there's always next year! And halfway isn't bad. 3y

1.5/5⭐ Almost everything in this book is so surface level as to be utterly useless, if not downright lacking vital important information (e.g. for herb use) or providing misinformation (e.g. re: smudging, citing flawed studies).

The summary emphasizes all garden space sizes, but the text focuses solely on large yards.

There are much better, more reliably informed books out there on all these topics. Give this one a pass.

Where do I begin to break down this mess? All these snippets are from THE SAME PAGE. The initial segue from the previous (unpictured) paragraph on using flames to pretending smoke is the same thing. The complete appropriation and downplay of the importance of smudging to Native Americans (SIMPLE RITUAL?!?!?!). (continued in comments)

hissingpotatoes The citation of a flawed, unsupported study to promote smoke cleansing indoors after giving a (very valid) warning about indoor smoke just lines ago...which is an irrelevant point anyway because this is a book about OUTDOOR garden spaces. The mention of white sage without any context of its rampant unsustainable harvesting, when the author repeatedly asserts she's such a conscientious steward of nature. WOW. (edited) 4y

This year I set my book goal to 100. The past few years I‘ve been getting 80-85, but I figure if I spend less time zoning out on my phone and more time reading, I can easily hit 100. January is off to a good start, with many of these being books that had already been started and never finished or on my TBR forever.

This one really surprised me! I didn't expect to enjoy this so much but #Sanctuary had me hooked from the start and kept me up way past my bedtime. Dealing with some dark themes (e.g. rape, victim blaming), this book was hard to read at times but it's a real page-turner. The murder mystery with all its twists and turns was so well plotted and the setting was incredibly atmospheric. I also loved the diverse cast of characters and the magic element.

This book taught me so much, and at the same time made me mad as hell. I had no idea that being "illegal" was a concept not created the way it's seen today until the 1960s. Chomsky (yes, she is Noam's daughter)explains so clearly how the system is rigged so that we all profit from the work of the undocumented while shaking our heads and yelling about how they're taking our jobs, when actually no one will take the jobs they do. #audiobook on#scribd
