Corrag is a solitary girl with a knowledge of herbs. She's also a witness to the Glencoe massacre. Put them together and she's set to be burnt for a witch. I loved Corrag's voice with its vivid, keenly felt experience of the Highlands. She is quite simply in love with life, however difficult, and with the natural world. Such beauty! The love story felt superfluous: can't she be an interesting, fully convincing character without sighing over a man?

I‘m really bad at following directions and/or choosing just one, so I have a few contenders for my #bestbooksofar2019 😃

🌟 The Highland Witch by Susan Fletcher
🌟 A Ladder to the Sky by John Boyne
🌟 Once Upon a River by Diane Setterfield
🌟 The Lost Queen by Signe Pike

megnews I recently read my first John Boyne and want to check out something else by him. Will keep this one in mind. Thanks for sharing!! 9mo
Soubhiville Yes to Ladder and Once Upon a River! Both excellent! 9mo

"They all threw out the word like it was a curse, at first. But then, later, they said it as if it was a precious word. They used softer voices. They would put their heads on one side, say Sassenach..."

Major "Outlander" vibes, anyone?

It's ages since I did one of these!
1. England. Gloucester, currently.
2. The Pembrokeshire coast, Wales.
3. 18th century Scotland (Tagged)
4. Double Gloucester cheese! There's even an ancient custom of chasing a whole cheese down a ridiculously steep local hill on the Whitsun bank holiday. The winner gets the cheese (and most likely a sprained ankle, at the very least.)
5. Will do.

"Some people cannot have a peopled life. We try for it. We go to markets, and say hello." ?

And why is it that, whatever the nature of a woman's perceived transgressions, sooner or later she ends up being called a whore? As though she can only be understood, and categorised, in terms of sex. I am so beyond tired of this (I don't mean the book, which is great so far)!

January wrap up:

19 books finished

5 paper/ebooks (1501 pages read)
14 audio!!!! 😲 (160+ hours listened)

7 #NewYearWhoDis books
2 #1001books
3 #MtTBR books
5 challenge books

I used the library a LOT, and saved $316 by doing so, but I didn‘t read much from my tbr. 😳 I‘m loving my fancy reading tracker!

I had seven 5-star reads, pictured above.

Very favorites: The Highland Witch, A Ladder to the Sky, Once Upon a River, Blood Water Paint

Karisa Wow! That's amazing! 📚💜😊 10mo
Julsmarshall Where do you get your audiobooks? My library has a woefully small collection and audio is so pricey! 10mo

sprainedbrain @Julsmarshall my actual library doesn‘t have ANY... I pay $50 per year for an out-of-state library card at Brooklyn Public Library, and I get most of them from there. Well worth it! (edited) 10mo
Julsmarshall @sprainedbrain I‘ve considered doing that-it would be cheaper than audible. Do you download via Libby? 10mo
sprainedbrain @Julsmarshall Yep! I love Libby. I have also paid for an out-of-state card with Fairfax County (VA) Public Library. It‘s a little bit cheaper. Right now, I have active cards for both and can switch back and forth on Libby! 10mo
AlaMich I never realized you could pay for out of town/state library cards. How did you know what libraries allow it and/or decide among the ones that do? 10mo
sprainedbrain @AlaMich I first learned about it from my Litsy friend @Lola when I was complaining a couple of years ago about my lack of a local library. Here‘s an article with a bunch! https://www.aworldadventurebybook.com/blog/libraries-with-non-resident-borrowing... 10mo

Crazeedi @sprainedbrain I have a free one from Philadelphia since I'm in that state, I could do it online. But I didn't know this either! I'm going to check it out! My local library is very small. I know if I go personally to other libraries in the state I can get free cards. I've been thinking of driving to Pittsburgh to get one from the Carnegie 10mo
MallenNC I thought Blood Water Paint was excellent. 10mo
sprainedbrain @Crazeedi I wish the library in my tiny town participated in Iowa great library sharing program, but they don‘t. So I get my ebooks and audiobooks from other states. 😃 10mo
Kristy_K Which list do you use for #1001books? I‘ve seen so many editions and lists that I don‘t know which one to choose! 10mo
sprainedbrain @MallenNC it was excellent! 10mo
Freespirit Some brilliant books there! 10mo
Crazeedi @sprainedbrain I'm definitely looking in to the other states! Btw I loved the highland witch and 84 charing cross road! (edited) 10mo
sprainedbrain @Kristy_K I have the Boxall book, but it‘s not the most recent edition, so I mainly use the app which has them all. I‘m working on the complete list that has way more than 1001. 😜 10mo
VeganCleopatra What reading tracker are you using? 10mo
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @sprainedbrain yes!! I wish she would write another one!! @ruthemmielang 💗 (edited) 10mo

What an excellent book to be my first finished in 2019!

Beautifully written historical fiction set around the Glencoe Massacre in 1692...don‘t let the title and cover of the audiobook fool you—this is not fantasy. The Scottish highlands are so richly described, and Corrag is such a completely developed, captivating character, I could not stop listening to this book.

I‘m so glad I got matched with you, Nikki. Wow!

BridgetteM Sounds good! I added it to my TBR. 😁 11mo
monalyisha Nice! This has been on my list for a long time; now that I know that the audio‘s good, maybe I‘ll knock it out sooner rather than later (my audio TBR list is much shorter than my print list 😉). 11mo
sprainedbrain @monalyisha The audio is very well done! 11mo

megzlynn That sounds amazing! 11mo
Crazeedi I read this recently, it was a great book, its be neat to listen to it, especially if the Scottish accentsxwere done well 11mo
kgriffith Dang, I was into it until you said it‘s not fantasy 😉 11mo
sprainedbrain @kgriffith It‘s pretty fantastic, though! 11mo
kgriffith @sprainedbrain it sounds it! My rule for this year is not adding anything unless there‘s an incredibly compelling argument to put it on the list with TBR books I‘ve owned for as long as a decade, so if you can sell it...! 😏 11mo
sprainedbrain @kgriffith As a person who is also actively working on whittling down a massive tbr, I don‘t think I can sell this one over what you already have. If it wasn‘t for #newyearwhodis I probably would never have read this... and that makes me sad. 😬 11mo
kgriffith @sprainedbrain okay I‘m putting this on my 2ndary tbr just bc you have such feels about it 😏 11mo
sprainedbrain @kgriffith and now I making a secondary tbr list because that‘s a brilliant idea! 😂 11mo
LeeRHarry The edition I have is called Corrag - have yet to get to it - I love Susan Fletcher‘s writing, the tagged book is one of my fave ever books 😊 11mo
sprainedbrain @LeeRHarry As soon as I finished this book, I started looking for more by her... I can only find one through the library. Looks like I will be ordering from the UK, because I must read more of her work. 😃 11mo
VeganCleopatra I'm so glad you enjoyed it so much! It was my favorite is 2018! I too enjoyed the audiobook, we'll done for sure. 11mo

Four and a half ⭐️ This was a great story, a great tale. The Scottish highlands, the story of the Glencoe Massacre and the 'witch' who told the story that passed into legend. Excellent telling of Cora who fought against all odds, in a time that forces were against her, against all odds she told her story. I highly recommend

Have you ever read a book that you keep putting down because you don't want a sad ending? Or else you want to sneak to the last pages and see what happens? This book is cutting my heart💔

Andrew65 Totally agree. A great book but real rollercoaster of emotions and that feel of dread. 14mo

The title character, Corrag, is imprisoned for her involvement in the 1692 Massacre of Glencoe and stands accused of witchcraft. As she awaits her death, she relates her tale to a man who visits her. The premise of this (still TBR) novel reminds me of Burial Rites by Hannah Kent.

Andrew65 Loved this book! 1y

Andrew65 @Melissa_J It was also published under the title The Highland Witch. 1y
LeahBergen @Andrew65 @Melissa_J Yes, I remember chatting about it before! Why all the title changes? 🤔 They must have thought that having “witch” in the title would boost sales? 1y
LeahBergen @Hooked_on_books It IS a pretty cover! 1y

Fletcher wrote a very atmospheric, compelling and beautiful novel about a difficult and brutal time period in Scotland. I loved Corrag and her connection to nature warmed by heart. I don't come across characters as memorable as Corrag very often and she will be fondly remembered by me. It is not a fast moving novel but one that focuses on characters, characters that are not only human but also animals and mountains. This is a new favorite.

tammysue Great review, Nikki! 1y

Corral by Susan Fletcher is an excellent, and interesting, example of historical fiction covering the Glencoe Massacre in Scotland in 1609.This book also covers witchcraft, or suspected witchcraft and relationships, and the difference one person can make. It is rated at 4.25 on Goodreads and I thoroughly recommend it! It has also been published under the title The Highland Witch.

LeahBergen I have this waiting on my shelf. 👍🏻 1y

Glencoe, Scotland. There was a massacre here in the 17th century, and the tagged book is set at that time.
