In her quickly gentrifying rural lake town Jade sees recent events only her encyclopedic knowledge of horror films could have prepared her for in this latest novel from the Jordan Peele of horror literature, Stephen Graham Jones. Jade feels like shes trapped in a slasher film as tourists go missing and the tension between her community and the celebrity newcomers to the Indian Lake shore heads towards a tipping point, when she feels the killer will rise. Jade watches as the small town she knows and loves begins to head towards catastrophe as yachts compete with canoes and the celebrity rich change the landscape of what was designated park lands to develop what they call Terra Nova. This new novel from the acclaimed author of The Only Good Indians and literary master (Tananarive Due, author of The Good House) Stephen Graham Jones, is a must-read, exploring the changing landscape of the West through his particular voice of sharp humor and prophetic violence that will have you cheering for the American heroine we need.

Bk1 of November & Bk3 of #20in4 #readathon is done! I started this the last day of #Scarathlon but unfortunately didn‘t finish it in time, so not sure if I should count it as one? @Clwojick what do you think? This was brilliant, extremely strange but brilliant. He has a strange mind, Graham Jones. Almost King-like in it‘s rooting for the outcast against all odds. Highly recommend. #BookspinBingo #Pageathon #52BookClubRC #ReadHarder2022

Whoa! A lot to unpack in this book. Not just a paranormal mystery but some stuff simmering under the surface for our MC. I love all of the slasher references.

Excitedly making my way through this new, audio only, Graham-Jones. I only wish it had dropped at Halloween 🎃 since the book is fully set during the season. I could save it... buuuut.... why procrastinate a good book?

Not in database so I tagged another of his I loved.

I had high hopes for this, due to all the postive reviews I've seen but this is up there with the most boring books I've ever read.

It was so slow, the dialogue terrible - the writing is all over the place. Awful.

AUDIOBOOKINGWITHLEAH I DNF'd this one...I think I quit before I even got to 10%. 4mo
BC_Dittemore I enjoyed this all the way up until the end; it just didn‘t seem to fit with the rest of the book, nor the overall slasher theme 4mo
SamAnne I liked it but yes it was a bit uneven. I loved the themes of rural gentrification and the main character. It didn‘t flood me like The On,y Good Indian did. LOL, my Goodreads review of this one is the first time an author has “liked” my review! (edited) 4mo
Twainy LOL this is the only one by him that I‘ve liked. I‘m about to listen to The Babysitter Lives. Wish me luck. 4mo

There are a lot of deep themes to unpack in this novel however this wasn‘t a full on pick for me. The stream of consciousness style wasn‘t my cup of tea. And the middle really hung me up. I may not have finished this if it wasn‘t a book club book, but I‘m oddly glad I did. Very conflicted review, I know!

I so much wanted to love this. Unfortunately it almost sent me into a reading slump. It was a drag to get through. It might be expectations on my part but for me this book should have been 150 pages shorter cutting out much of Jades ramblings. I know it is supposed to be a love letter to horror but I needed more action & well horror. When I read horror I anticipate at least elevated heartbeats but everything was bogged down I never got there.

So so bc there were elements that I liked, but overall, this was a bit of a disappointment. I was expecting to love it, the plot was so promising, as were the first few pages… but goooooddddd it got so slow. Then rushed. It was a bit confusing at places, and I dno, it started to feel like a hassle each time I came back to it. But I did it! It‘s done.

TheKidUpstairs I bailed on this one, I just couldn't slog through the slow stuff. And I was so excited for it after loving 7mo

An interesting set-up that is weighed down by one hell of a meandering plot - but saved eventually by a bonkers finale. I wish some confident editor had slashed some of the filler and reduced the page count by a hundred. 🔪

Jade has dreamed for years that the slasher movies she‘s obsessed with would devastate her hometown. When bodies actually start dropping, she tries to warn Letha, who Jade believes is the final girl. But Letha is more concerned with what happened to Jade to make her use slasher films for coping & also why she tried to take her own life. this book is gory, mythical, and heartbreaking. while I got bored sometimes, overall enjoyed. #unpopularopinion ( @LKK526 thought you might appreciate this 🙂)
- This story had me off kilter - at times I was totally absorbed, other times totally bored. Too many themes and plots. Jade was an unreliable narrator - at the end I wasn't sure what was real (maybe that was the point?).

Jade, a troubled and vulnerable high school student, has wished for a long time that the slasher movies she's obsessed with would descend on her hometown. When the bodies start falling, Jade tries to warn the newcomer she's convinced will be the "final girl," but finds her own secrets revealed in the process. A grisly shout out to horror films, yet the most horrifying part was all too real: a child, unprotected. TW: cutting, suicide, abuse.

I am floored by this authors literary talent and how he brings that into the horror genera. I‘m used to not taking horror books too seriously- what‘s poetic about a slasher?
But Jones has mastered the decentralized, multiple conflicts that‘s behind any good work of literature. And well rounded characters with creative motivations, and a mastery of the slasher genera. The chapter break essays by the MC also informs readers while building background

My second arc from this author and I‘m officially a fan. This is graphic horror, but so much more. A coming of age story, a psychological drama, a reflection on treatment of Native Americans, and a love letter to slasher films. All of that and an ending that will leave you breathless and heartbroken. It‘s not an easy read but worth the effort. So much to peel back here. Meanwhile, Klaus fell asleep nose in the blanket. #netgalley #catsoflitsy

11-6-21: My 111th finished book of 2021! Jade Daniels is a slasher movie aficionado. She lives in Proofrock, Idaho, by Indian Lake. When people start turning up dead, Jade is convinced that this is the real life slasher movie she has been waiting for. The only problem is, she doesn‘t see herself as the final girl. So if not her than who? An extremely violent but engrossing read. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 👍🏼📖#️⃣1️⃣1️⃣1️⃣

First, this is gory.🩸 So if you are uncomfortable with violence, blood or the mention of maggots, this is not for you! I loved Jade the MC, in middle school I would have followed her around like a puppy. She is the town outcast, obsessed with Slasher horror films, and at loose ends after graduation. Until bodies star showing up and she realizes she is in her own real life slasher. This was a great read for Spooky season 🎃 and the ending is EPIC.

Both Hendrix and Jones wrote slasher-related horror novels this year, and while I liked Hendrix‘s humor, Jade, in this book, was my favorite MC.

Jade is a slasher buff that begins to see signs of an eminent movie moment in her hometown. I loved her inserts of Slasher 101, and I felt the deaths were the right amount of grisly. While I saw the killer and had an idea of the ending midway through, it was still an excellent read! ⬇️
