Stolen Tongues
Stolen Tongues | Felix Blackwell
A romantic cabin getaway doesn't go exactly as planned.High up on the windswept cliffs of Pale Peak, Faye and Felix celebrate their new engagement. But soon, a chorus of ghastly noises erupts from the nearby woods: the screams of animals, the cries of children, and the mad babble of a hundred mournful voices. A dark figure looms near the windows in the dead of night, whispering to Faye. As the weather turns deadly, Felix discovers that his terrified fianc?e isn't just mumbling in her sleep - she's whispering back. Originally a contest-winning story on reddit.com's horror community NoSleep, Stolen Tongues has received widespread acclaim and is now being adapted into a feature film.

Mix feelings with this one because of the ending but it started so well. This couple went to this isolated cabin, owned by Faye‘s parents. They would celebrate their engagement. But then there are “ghastly” noises...someone/something is out there in the woods🥺The audiobook is amazing. I enjoyed this horror novel. Fast reading. 3/3.5⭐️

Book was received last year during #CreepyChristmas 2022 from @CindyLufeIsLit @teebe (coordinator)

🎧 A LOT of people have recommended this as great horror! I went in blind.

I expected a serial killer with a necklace made of tongues. Not sure if I‘m disappointed by that but the spin on this story was good.

The same scenario happens in multiple different ways which slowly unveils the truth.

Engaged couple, cabin in the woods. Secrets. Native American horror. A couple spins. Some gruesome deaths. A good thriller/horror.

I‘m a BIG horror fan and consume horror media in many different formats. It takes a lot to creep me out or unsettle me. But this book here… From the opening page you could just tell something was off and Blackwell never takes his foot off the gas. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Extremely creepy! ?

Overall, I'm giving this a pick because there were several sections of this that completely freaked me out while reading it. I felt though that the ending fell apart a bit.

The nightmares and sleepwalking really messed with my head. I would have liked more detail about the Native folklore behind the "Hollow Ones" though.

Still if you like atmospheric horror with things that go bump in the night, give this a try.

Based on all the recommendations, I was really expecting to like this book a lot more. Something about it is very familiar. It kind of reminds me of Imaginary Friend. I don't know. The pacing was slow and it felt, to me like it needed more revision because it became very redundant. I expect horror to be sort of slow to create tension but this pushed past that to the point that it slogged a bit. Overall, ⭐⭐⭐

tyoung2058 It was very slow at the beginning but got better towards the end. 1y

This started out strong with a girl who is seemingly possessed by some type of demon after a visit to a family cabin. Turns out she's haunted by her own demons & needs to reconcile with the proverbial elephant in the room. 👎 It dragged on for far too long and I wasn't thrilled with the slap-bang wrap up. Creepy enough but I lost it along the way.

FelinesAndFelonies I'm so glad I'm not the only one that this fell flat for. 🤣 1y
IamIamIam @FelinesAndFelonies It was disappointing!! It had such a cool premise and it was creepy as hell when it started out. He's writing a prequel & he said if people didn't like the ending to ST, this may help them understand why it ended that way. 🤷‍♀️ 1y

Book 157🎧 3.5⭐️

There is no delay in wildness with this book! We jump right in!👏🏻

On a “romantic” getaway, someone starts to talk to Fay in her sleep, someone familiar. But soon there is a lot more to worry about than just talking…

I also loved the end conversation about Indigenous peoples this author added. This is how you incorporate beliefs and cultures that you do not belong to👏🏻

ShelleyBooksie I'm torn. It sounds soo good but also scary. Was it gory or just really spooky? 2y
BeeMagical @ShelleyBooksie I personally didn‘t find it too gory, maybe only a few descriptions. More “mind horror” and creeping in the shadows 2y

🌟🌟🌟 Seriously how do you tip the creeps that was the opening of this book! I don‘t scare easy, but I was pretty creeped out with the opening intro. Then sadly, the book sort of loses me a little as it goes. I mean it‘s super creepy it just went on too long and the reasoning and ending were weak. But I would recommend for that great opening !!

FelinesAndFelonies Yes! So unnecessarily long. Definitely needed some revision because the story got lost in the details. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 1y

So I think I was way too hyped for this book. Everyone said it was amazing and best horror ever. And I felt super disappointed. The creepiness was on point but the actual story completely flopped. The first 100 pages was good but then it kept going.. and going.. and the ending I was like are you kidding me!?! 2.5/5

Okay, y‘all. This book? This is the first book I‘ve read in a long time that has actually creeped me out. Felix Blackwell caused me to be drawn into such a trance with this that there were times I forgot that I was just reading and not standing with his characters, hearing the sounds they did, seeing what they did. Took ages to read this, I know. But in actuality I read it in two sittings because I was away visiting Scotland for the first time in two years and it was amazing to see family and explore some nature.

This is such an eerie, tense atmospheric read which is written very well.

The fear of the unknown has a continuous rhythm in this one and the author does not waste time with unnecessary descriptions and details.

⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ https://suspensebookreviews.home.blog/2021/12/30/stolen-tongues-by-felix-blackwe...

A brilliant debut novel from a talented indie author. This novel follows a lovely couple on their vacation to a family cabin in the woods. Someone or something wants in & will stop at nothing to get what it wants, even if that means following them wherever they go. Filled with horror and gruesome scenes this one will leave you with a phobia into the dark.

This is barely a pick because it has some very creepy moments. Faye and Felix go spend a weekend at a cabin in Colorado where something starts talking to Faye during her sleepwalking episodes. This scene gets repeated too many times in this book over and over. Also, the horror comes from Native mythology. The author has a note in the back with the title A Word on Natives in Fiction which talks about how sensitive he wanted to be when writing 👇🏼

Reggie Native characters, about their cultures, and their history. That‘s all fine but when you have white main characters against a cultural backdrop and the only people who die are the Native characters. I just hate that. 2y
Centique @Reggie ugh. I hate that too. 🙄 2y

Reggie @Crazeedi I‘m actually doing a little after Christmas baking today and going through my Litsy messages while waiting for my last batch of a cookie. Hope you had a Merry Christmas and hope you have a great New Year! 2y
Reggie @Bookzombie ☝🏽I did get them my friend. Since you asked me if it was ok I thought I should ask you. I would have posted about Max but the post I want to put is political and I just don‘t want to put that out on Litsy right now. But I‘ll tell you. A couple of years ago at my casino I had this lovable customer who stills wears Trump masks tell me he‘s voting for Trump cause all the liberals want to do is teach kids about trans testicles instead 2y
Reggie @Bookzombie of strapping up and kicking the shit out of the world. And I thought maybe if we taught trans testicles in school people would be less afraid of them and less inclined to hurt someone who yes may be different but now we have an understanding. Because knowledge leads to understanding which leads to less fear to not the dark side basically the inverse of Yoda‘s speech. Lol and then this past year this customer showed up wearing a 👇🏼 2y
Reggie @Bookzombie wearing a shirt that said Pro Life Pro Guns I‘m a Patriot….Triggered yet? Lol, and I laughed cause I thought-bitch, you know who‘s triggered? The guy who has to wear that shirt. And then Christmas Eve my brother showed up in a shirt with Trump on it with his middle fingers raised. When he unzipped his jacket and it popped out inside I will admit I was triggered but just told myself that that was my brother, who I know. And then he👇🏼 2y
Reggie @Bookzombie then he tells me he changed his shirt halfway up here because he knew up North were are more blue and he was hoping someone would say something so he could fight them. That this past year he‘s been so angry. That he just needs somewhere to put it. He‘s going through a divorce with someone who he was with for 13 years, and that‘s not an excuse to want to provoke violence through misplaced rage. But I think a lot of men are angry 👇🏼 2y
Reggie @bookzombie and have nowhere to put that rage. Or maybe it‘s just me making up stuff. I should have just written you another card lol. Thank you for letting me vent and thanks again for the books. The Pochoda is next. 2y
Bookzombie @Reggie I‘m so sorry I didn‘t see your first reply above. I‘m okay with you posting whatever you would like. I understand about not wanting to be political on here. You know, you can email or write any time. 🙂 It‘s upsetting that books like Max are being challenged. They are important so for so many reasons, including knowledge and understanding like you said. I am imagining your “lovable customer” being of an older generation, ⬇️ 2y
Bookzombie @Reggie but I know that mindset is in all generations. I have to see shirts, masks and giant flags when I go out (it‘s Texas), but I‘m thankful that I don‘t have to see or hear that from customers. It stinks that you have to see it at your job.
I‘m sorry to hear about your brother‘s divorce. Everything going on in our world probably only makes that experience even worse. I can‘t imagine going ⬇️
2y
Bookzombie @Reggie through that the best of times. I don‘t think it‘s just men that are angry. I think there is probably a lot of anger for many people and we aren‘t sure how to handle or where to direct it. While I know more people talk about how they feel and seek help to deal with those feelings, I think many people still have a hard time doing that. 2y
Bookzombie @Reggie You can vent anytime! I‘m so glad you got the books and I look forward to seeing what you think of the Pochoda. I‘m still putting together the other small package. I will give you a heads up when I get it out. 🐌🦥 2y

Felix and Faye are an engaged couple. They go to the mountains for a weekend getaway at Faye's parent's cabin. Creepy things happen. Something is trying to possess Faye's soul and lure Felix to his death. I liked bringing in the Native American folk lore to the story. The descriptions of Faye's possessions were very visual. I could see this being a successful movie. The story was interesting but really didn't do much for me. 3.5 stars
