The Measure
The Measure | Nikki Erlick
Eight ordinary people. One extraordinary choice.
It seems like any other day. You wake up, pour a cup of coffee, and head out.
But today, when you open your front door, waiting for you is a small wooden box. This box holds your fate inside: the answer to the exact number of years you will live.
From suburban doorsteps to desert tents, every person on every continent receives the same box. In an instant, the world is thrust into a collective frenzy. Where did these boxes come from? What do they mean? Is there truth to what they promise?
As society comes together and pulls apart, everyone faces the same shocking choice: Do they wish to know how long they’ll live? And, if so, what will they do with that knowledge?
The Measure charts the dawn of this new world through an unforgettable cast of characters whose decisions and fates interweave with one another: best friends whose dreams are forever entwined, pen pals finding refuge in the unknown, a couple who thought they didn’t have to rush, a doctor who cannot save himself, and a politician whose box becomes the powder keg that ultimately changes everything.
Enchanting and deeply uplifting, The Measure is a sweeping, ambitious, and invigorating story about family, friendship, hope, and destiny that encourages us to live life to the fullest.

Overall, this was an entertaining read for me. I enjoyed reading the multiple perspectives, and the pace was enough to keep me turning the pages -- although some of it I found fairly predictable. I think it would be a great book for discussion, not tackling questions about whether you would want to know how long you have left to live, but also addressing the themes of discrimination woven throughout the book.

What if every adult in the world woke up and received a box with a string foretelling the length of their life? Would you open it? Timely and compelling, this book breaks your heart, but in the best way. Told from multiple perspectives, the writing is rich and beautiful with a life affirming resilience that will have me thinking for a long time. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #BookspinBingo #JoyousJanuary #Pantone23 #empireyellow @TheAromaofBooks @Andrew65 @Clwojick

26% in and wondering if this is going to go anywhere unexpected? The premise is intriguing of course, I decidedly would NOT open the box. I am wondering if this would have been a powerful short story.

Bumped this up my TBR because the e-book goes back tomorrow & the waitlist is still long. This book will have me thinking for a while. Would I open my box or not? Loved the different stories & POVs & although a bit alarming at times how it seems to mirror current events & the state of the world, that made it all the more absorbing & hard to put down. I got emotionally attached to several of the characters & found myself tearing up more than once.

Hestapleton I just finished this one last week and I‘m still thinking about it! I enjoyed it much more than I thought I would. 2w

Good. Follows eight people and their journey when they get strings in boxes and what they mean to them and the impact it has on their lives and their loved ones. Even though I enjoyed this I wish there had been more discovery about where the strings come from as at the start of the book there was a real promise but nothing came of it.

Read this at my IRL book club- everyone enjoyed it and it led to GREAT discussion! We each had a box at our seat and there was a mix of people who opened theirs and people who didn‘t! We all loved Amy and Ben; disliked Jack and Anthony. Loved all the details the author included from North Korea‘s response to new versions of The Bachelor!

A fantastic plot!! I loved the connections between the characters, they‘re not all direct but they are all linked. Then end came but didn‘t feel hurried, although I‘d love more detail on Jack and his uncle instead of the gloss over they were given. Book #82 in 2022

World‘s adult population (why no kids? Too messy to tackle short lives for children?) receives boxed strings signifying the length of their lives. What to do with this info personally, politically, socially? Discrimination, surveillance, civil unrest. Somewhat surface exploration, characters all young/middle-aged professionals—if global phenom, more people from different backgrounds? But a good party question: “would you open your box?” 2022

This has a fascinating premise though the story didn't play out quite the way I expected. It was less about how such a thing has happened and more how do we respond now that it has. Sadly, many of the responses felt all too *predictable. I enjoyed seeing most of the stories play out although I did feel the book lost steam in the last third. I liked it but would have loved a stronger ending.
(*not a criticism of the book but of humans)

What would you change if you knew the date of your death? If you knew the date of your partner‘s death? Would you change the way you work? The way you love? Would it change the way you saw others or what you felt entitled to? In this book everyone in the world receives strings that measure the length of their lives and suddenly nothing is the same. Thought provoking and emotional, I thought this was so well done and excellent on audio.

The Measure follows multiple characters as they deal with the knowledge of the length of their life remaining. One day everyone worldwide over the age of 22 receives a box with a string showing the length of their life and from his point people are separated into two groups the short strings and long strings. The book was emotional and really made you think.

This has one of the best premises I have heard in a long time. One day everyone in the world awakens to a box with a string inside that determines the length of the person‘s life. The author glides over the how and why the strings appeared, and gets right to describing the fallout from this information. The book shifts between the various characters‘ perspectives and raises many questions. Excellent for book club discussions.

This book has received so much praise and I can understand because there's a lot about it that I truly loved. However, about midway through I just got a little tired of "the strings" and wished the author had chosen something a little more substantial to be in the box.

I loved the premise though and the exploration of prejudices that arise when the boxes are discovered.

Book 112

The Measure, by Nikki Erlick, is a dystopian novel in which every adult unexplainably receives a box holding a measure of string that correlates with the length of the owner's life. Some choose to look at their string, others are forced to look, and some never look. The eight characters' lives all intertwine, in far-fetched ways. A great impetus for discussion about mortality, but the characters and book could have been stronger. 3.5

This debut starts with all the characters and everyone in the world receiving a box with a lone string inside. Each string are of different lengths. It doesn‘t take long for the world to realize that the length of the string is the length of the recipient‘s life. Soon after there is prejudice against those with short strings. This read real gives me the feelings of the political climate of 2020.

Read with Jenna picks are usually winners for me, and this one is no exception. It‘s a really interesting look at human relationships and time and how divisive we can be when we feel threatened. The connections between the characters at the end felt a little forced for my liking, BUT it‘s a book about “strings,” thus connections and I get it. An absolute pick in my book! 🌟
