In 2023, to hell with the 10 rating scale! I‘m going to rate out of 5 from now on like a normal person (except instead of stars it‘s going to be jeans. Get it? Because my name is Jean? 😀 Anyways…)

This is my 2nd read of 2023! This book has gotten a lot of sudden backlash recently. It went from being the most loved book in the community to being a guilty pleasure among readers. I have one question for y‘all

Did we read the same book? 1/4

jeannasser I thought this book was amazing and totally deserving of the praise it originally got. While the writing style is extremely simple, Colleen delivers and brings her A game with the character development. Getting to go deep into Lily‘s mind and her past was an experience of its own. Colleen makes you feel every ounce of hurt the story brings to the table. I liked how raw and honest everything was. This is not a romance book 2/4 (edited) 1y
jeannasser so I understand people‘s frustrations when going into this expecting a cute romance about a girl opening up a flower shop and meeting the guy of her dreams. That‘s NOT what this is. This book represents a realistic view into domestic violence and the victim‘s internal struggle to find strength. As someone who has been in Lily‘s shoes, I appreciate the fact that this book raises awareness on such a topic. 3/4 1y
jeannasser And that ENDING. It destroyed me emotionally that‘s for sure. I haven‘t sobbed this much with a book in a long time. While there is so much pain emanating from this story, in the end it still felt like a warm hug. Please don‘t let the hate keep you from giving this a chance. Just because some people don‘t enjoy it doesn‘t mean you won‘t either. 4/4 (edited) 1y
marleed Yes, it liked this book and looked forward to the sequel which I also liked. My thoughts when reading CoHo is that she is aware and responsible to the young followers. I like how She wrote this story. 1y
Reggie Oh, man. When she asked those 3 questions to Ryle after having the baby I had snot coming down my nose. Lol, I loved this book and reading her author‘s note gave me a real appreciation for the author. 1y

HAPPY NEW YEAR, LITTENS!
I know I barely post on here nowadays but that‘s gonna change this new year (hopefully 😅)!
In 2022, I read a total of 15 books (29 if you add a bunch of old short stories I read) It was a great reading year. I enjoyed almost every book, mostly very underground stuff. I can‘t wait to see what my reading journey will look like this year. Will make another post showing all the books in a grid 🥰

How are you guys??

Horror & smut fans? This is for you! This is the complete opposite of Malice, which I reviewed yesterday. If you come into this expecting plot and character development, you‘re gonna be disappointed. This is nothing but the author‘s very dark fantasy about masked men, but written out in the best way possible. It was enjoyable and it kept me on edge. I recommend this to anyone looking for a quick but sexy read. Check the trigger warnings though…

Was reading this bad boy during Halloween and I finished it yesterday. This book is beautiful, and I know that might be a weird statement to make considering the fact that this is a reverse harem dark mafia romance. But believe me, this is not a smut book. It has smut, a lot of it, but the book is much more than that. It's a story of letting go, about literally facing your demons and letting them challenge you.

jeannasser I love how we got to see the vulnerable side of the Civella brothers and what makes them so dangerous and “evil.” It goes to show you that we're all human beings, no matter what. This is a fun, action packed, and lustful read. Can't recommend it enough. But if you go into this expecting just hardcore smut with no storyline, you're gonna be disappointed. These characters are gonna stay with me for a while. Protect Anthony at all costs 1y

Have you read this?

I‘m glad I‘m finally out of my reading slump. Also reading Beauty‘s Punishment by Anne Rice and Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk.

I know this one is already gonna be a five star read and I‘m only 16% in. So far I completely feel for Juliet and I love how casual Anthony is about everything.

I‘ll post my review of Scream For Us soon since I completely forgot to 😭

Uh...I can barely remember my password and now you want me to get my thoughts together after all that insanity??? That whole ending sequence is what made the story for me. It was an experience. A nail biting yet disturbing ride. F.R. Díaz doesn't sugarcoat. She doesn't just give you a glimpse of how horrible reality is and how depraved some people can be. No, she pries your eyes open and shows you the full picture, whether you like it or not.

TO ALL MY LISTEN-TO-MUSIC-WHILE-READING FOLKS! Don‘t know if anyone would be interested in this but what the heck 😂🤷‍♂️ Every day I‘m gonna share an ambient album recommendation for reading without any vocals or crazily distracting instrumentation.

Today we‘re going with an album that has a haunting atmosphere, setting the perfect mood for my current tagged read. The whole quartet is amazing but vol. 2 has a darker vibe to it.

Beta reading this book from the same author of The Effects of Her Nerium, which I read earlier this year and loved. This book is from an indie author, self-published, far from being popular, yet it‘s already blowing Mexican Gothic out the window. Better writing, characters, everything. If you‘re under the mentality that indie = 🗑, you obviously haven‘t given them a try. You‘re the one missing out on great stories like these 🤷‍♂️
Read F.R. Diaz!!

First (and hopefully only) bail of the year. This book has more mushrooms than the Super Mario universe. Mushrooms are now my least favorite pizza topping. Thank you Mexican Gothic.

jeannasser What the absolute fuck was that twist? Seriously was this book inspired by Mario? What happens every time Mario takes a mushroom? He powers up and his lifespan increases. That‘s exactly what happens to the Doyle family in this book! They breathe in the mushrooms in the house and live longer. They also have to literally mate with each other in order to prolong the bloodline. Ew no. Bye 1y

20% in. So far the only scary thing that has happened in this book is that there was a library filled with books covered in mildew.

persephone1408 @jeannasser I literally lol'd when I read your comment. Yes I didn't like this book very much but I did still finish it. 2y
TalesandTexts I think the ending is definitely interesting and weird enough to stick around for. But there is a bit much of setting the stage for a large chunk of the book. 2y
IMASLOWREADER lol…there were creepy parts throughout the story…it was a meh for me as well but finished it 2y

jeannasser @persephone1408 I couldn‘t finish it so you‘re stronger than me 😭😭 1y
jeannasser @TalesandTexts exactly! There was so much info dumping whenever she interacted with Francis or Marta and it made me not care for a lot of stuff in the story. Catalina is supposed to be the center and driving force of the plot but she was barely in the book to begin with 😂 I wish the history of the miners was shown to me instead of just info dumped 1y
jeannasser @IMASLOWREADER Yeah there was a bit of a creepy atmosphere. I feel like the whole Doyle situation was discomforting and it made me cringe in a good way. That‘s really the only positive I can find 😭 1y
persephone1408 @jeannasser yea it was the audiobook, so I didn't have to pay a lot of attention lol 1y

Yes after a few weeks without posting on here, this is what I come back with. I‘ve been super active on tiktok sharing reading vlogs on a book that‘s SO raunchy and kinky to the point where it‘s disturbing, as you can probably tell from my reaction here. To hell with Den of Vipers.

Has anyone read tagged book? If so what are your memories with it?

LibrarianRyan I have been watching your videos and laughing. I have a favorite part of each book. Have you got to the bees yet? Nice to see you here (I am the same screen name there). 2y
JamieArc I mean, now I‘m just super curious 😂😂 2y
Bookishlie I read them in high school, it was weirdly raunchy yet so using so much clinical language. I think she was going for a “story of O” vibe but missed, then again I was like 18 and now I‘m 48 so might get a whole different vibe from it this time. Lol 2y

The Last 8 | Laura Pohl

Pickpick

I just realized I actually rated this book an 8. Let‘s try to ignore the unintentional pun there shall we??
What can I say? As cliché as it sounds, this whole thing was a roller coaster of emotions. I could be laughing at something sassy a character says and by the next page, my heart would race out of my chest hoping one of them will be okay. The last few chapters melted my brain to mush and I even recommend this to those who don‘t like sci-fi 1

jeannasser Clover is one of the most exciting MCs I‘ve ever come across in YA. Seeing the story unravel through her eyes truly made this book special. Whether it is through her sarcastic comebacks or her most emotional inner dialogues, she will keep you entertained. My only complaints with the book are these; I was feeling iffy at the beginning. Some typical YA stereotypes were being brought up and it took a little while for the story to fully take off 2 2y
jeannasser Other issue I have is with the writing style. I don‘t expect a Nevernight/SoA style of writing in everything I read, but HOLY FISH STICKS was the writing in this book FLAT AS A WALL. Like literally telling instead of showing in EVERYTHING. These may sound like reasons for me to rate it lower than I did, but trust me. The story and characters kept me on edge and at the end, I‘m FULLY satisfied with what I read. Give this a try. Very accessible 3 2y
jeannasser I feel really really really stupid for not seeing that twist coming. It was right in front of my face. The aliens can‘t see them and they‘re immune to the alien‘s attacks? Why? OBVIOUSLY BECAUSE THEYRE NOT FREAKING HUMAN EITHER! It was soooooo obvious but at the same time I‘m glad I didn‘t figure it out. So good job to Laura for not making it too crystal clear I guess 2y
jeannasser Also I KNEW a character was gonna die considering the fact that the next book is called The First 7, however, when Adam died it still hit a nerve. I didn‘t expect it to be him and then so suddenly. Laura chose the right character to kill off and make me suffer for. Also while I love Violet‘s growth I do feel like she switched up WAY TOO FAST from having beef with Clover to almost NONE, but no big deal 2y

Forgot to update y‘all on this but I just recently finished this book. The photo is blank with no rating because it‘s been brought to my attention that I had read an older unrevised version of it, so I‘m gonna hold off on rating until I‘ve read the revised one. However this is definitely a pick. If you like gory (like super super gory) feminist psychological horror with lesbian rep then I highly recommend this book. A great message against SA.

Far From You | Tess Sharpe

Pickpick

Going Pitchfork style with my ratings from now on. FFY fuses many genres together, but I wouldn‘t recommend this as a mystery/thriller. I recommend this because it has great characters and pure raw emotion. It explores through the struggle of dealing with grief, loss, and substance abuse in an intense way that makes me understand Sophie‘s motives, even though they‘re wrong. 1/5

jeannasser When writing contemporary books with teenagers in a similar situation, it‘s so easy to make the narrator unlikeable or flat (like Mickey from Heroine. I‘m so sorry Mindy fans but i enjoyed this a lot more 😔) However, I LOVED Sophie. She‘s strong and straightforward, and you see her growth not only in the present, but throughout several flashback chapters. 2/5 2y
jeannasser This is not your typical coming of age book. It‘s heartbreaking, romantic, and intense. Going deep into her personal struggles and her dedication to finding out the truth behind her best friend‘s murder, is what kept my hands glued to my physical copy. I wanna call this my read of the year so far, but the only thing that kept me from enjoying this more than Female of the Species is the ending. 3/5 2y
jeannasser The mystery reveal. What was that? It was so out of pocket and it left me scratching my head for a long time in a negative way. Didn‘t feel exciting to finally solve the mystery. It just left a bitter taste in my mouth, but overall I loved how Sophie‘s emotional and physical journey concluded, and THAT‘S what I feel people should focus on when going into this book. 4/5 2y
See All 6 Comments
jeannasser If you‘re looking for a fast-paced coming of age book with sapphic romance and large hints of mystery/thriller, then look no further than Far From You. I will read anything Tess Sharpe writes from now on. 5/5 2y
jeannasser Okay now a spoiler rant…of ALL characters that could‘ve been responsible for the murder and Jackie‘s disappearance…ADAM???? THE COACH??? Those characters didn‘t even have a quarter of page time in the book! I only suspected Adam when they introduced him but I quickly shrugged it off. The whole Coach sleeping with Jackie situation felt so out of pocket. It could‘ve done better in a different book much like Female of the Species, not here 2y
jeannasser Also Aunt Macy was SOOOOOO LIKEABLE and I loved her every time she opened her mouth. There was a perfect balance between her sass and the way she cared so much about Sophie. Why did she only show up for like a quarter of the book? 😭 I feel like she could‘ve done a great job as part of the team and trying to find the killer but oh well 😒 2y

This one is shaping up to be a miss for me from McGinnis‘s catalog 🫤 I‘m questioning my reading palate too since this seems to be in everyone‘s top 2 fav McGinnis books. Maybe FOTS set my expectations WAY too high or my mood reader senses are not in the mood. That‘s why I‘m setting it aside. IDK, but I just can‘t help but feel “meh” about almost everything in this book. I find Mickey‘s reasoning behind her addiction way too weak. 😭

1. The MC‘s character development and how I was able to root for her every step of the way. That‘s the reason why I felt every bit of tension in the story despite the book‘s obvious flaws.
2. I wish that there was even more to the mystery rather than what was revealed at the end. So maybe a sequel could‘ve had an even bigger twist waiting to be unfolded and causing more trouble in the ship.

These are the two books I read this month. Enjoyed both of them so that alone makes it worth a good reading month for me 🥰 at the end of the day, it‘s quality over quantity!
How many books did you read in March and what was your fav?

(PS…I have no idea why the hue in my camera today made this picture look like I‘m in the middle of a Saw trap game)

Gissy I liked The Female of the Species. So sad too. I read 13 books this month. My fav was Hamnet but I enjoyed most of them. There were a couple of thrillers/suspense that I really liked. 2y
bthegood I read 11 (4 were graphic novels) - my favorite was Batman: The Long Halloween - have a good week 🙂 2y

I‘m sorry I don‘t post on here as often as I‘d like. @WJCintron must have superpowers or something. Moving has been insane, but we‘re making a lot of progress and should be done soon😁
Anyways here is my best read of the month! (Very easy to choose because I could only read 2 books this month 🥰) Also I zoomed in on the bracket because my inner Virgo won‘t let the book covers look so small in the graph 🤠.

What‘s your read of the month?? 🥰

WJCintron LOL 😂 Yup! That inner Virgo of yours drives me insane. 🙄 2y

Last picture of my TBR desk before these beauties are all stacked up in boxes. Tried to get to them before the month ended but that wasn‘t possible. Only leaving Heroine and Darker Shade of Magic out to read in the meantime. Opening up a new chapter of our lives in a new home. This space that we‘ve lived in for 8 months will hold so many memories. I published my first book here, and I will publish my 2nd and many more in the new one.
Bittersweet

Gissy Interesting books in those stacks! Waiting for those future books! Exito! 2y
jeannasser @Gissy thank you!! 🥰 looking forward to working on them. Also yeah I can‘t wait to get to all these books 😭 2y
