What could be worse than your ex-boyfriend marrying your childhood best friend? Getting accused of her murder From the author of My Sweet Girl comes a dangerously addictive new thriller about a lavish Sri Lankan wedding celebration that not everyone will survive. When Amaya is invited to Kaavis over-the-top wedding in Sri Lanka, she is surprised and a little hurt to hear from her former best friend after so many years of radio silence. But when Amaya learns that the groom is her very own ex-boyfriend, she is consumed by a single thought: She must stop the wedding from happening, no matter the cost. But as the weeklong wedding celebrations begin and rumors about Amayas past begin to swirl, she cant help but feel like she also has a target on her back. When Kaavi goes missing and is presumed dead, all evidence points to Amaya. However, nothing is as it seems as Jayatissa expertly unravels that each wedding guest has their own dark secret and agenda, and Amaya may not be the only one with a plan to keep the bride from getting her happily ever after

This book actually started out a bit...weird. But I gave it a chance and am glad I did. I loved the way this murder mystery unfolded at just the right pace. Told in a series of flashbacks and present day interviews, the multiple POVs reveal things bit by bit. It's set in Sri Lanka several days leading to a lavish wedding. The Instagram-perfect bride is missing and feared dead.

5feet.of.fury It was weird. I liked the reveals though! 2mo

So many characters and things going on. The back and forth didn‘t add to the story, in my opinion. It took so long to get anywhere. There was just so much build up and I felt let down in the end. Not my favorite pick from BOTM.

JamieArc I felt the same with her first book. It‘s too bad she didn‘t get better with the second. 10mo

#sunshinenoir #booked2023 hot and humid Sri Lanka.
The thriller/suspense side was just a bit meh for me- felt like a lot of others. Interesting insight to class in Sri Lanka.

Cinfhen Sri Lanka does sound like a fascinating place to read about 😁 11mo

⭐️⭐️.5- I loved the setting of this book, but I do have issues w/ the overall flow to this story, & major inconsistencies w/ the main characters personality. Amaya was confusing, & not in the dark unreliable narrator way, but written in a genuinely confusing way. I feel so much about her was hidden for “twists” & she ultimately fell flat. Her random violent thoughts felt out of place & I‘m not sure what the intention was. Just messy. #botm

LazyLibrary Continued: it wasn‘t just Amaya whose messy, they ALL were. The mother was by far the best character. I enjoyed the Kaavi chapters at the end of the book the most. But it took an eternity to get there. This is a 2-3 star read for me. Sometimes I get sick of the “thriller twists” especially when they fall flat, or take away valuable details needed to enjoy the book to even get to the ending twist 🫠 14mo

⭐️⭐️⭐️ My local library is next door to my office. My team now knows that when I grab my coat and my keys and say that I‘ll “be right back,” I am heading there and that I am lying about returning soon.

I found this book simply by walking through the stacks, waiting for something to speak to me by cover only. I loved the Sri Lanka setting and honor the author‘s skill! If you dig unreliable and unlikable characters, this is worth checking out!

And this is my TBR marathon for the next 14 days. I've been wanting to read Hawking's new release, The Villa, but it's still on hold so I'm doing my own personal readathon with these books for the next two weeks.

BookLineNSinker @5feet.of.fury I got off track and quickly read the book I tagged here due to the growing waitlist and the dwindling time before it was due to be returned. I've circled back to you're invited and I'm in it now. Serves me right for loaning all the new releases I could get my hands on 😂 1y
5feet.of.fury @BookLineNSinker oh, I have definitely been there 😂 every time I say I‘m going to prioritize my physical TBR… all my library holds show up, even the ones that said they were 4 months out 😂 that book sounds good too! 1y

So chaotic. Amaya‘s influencer ex-bestfriend gets engaged to Amaya‘s ex-boyfriend. Amaya is OBSESSED with looking into them online and struggling with her mental health as the date approaches, then she is invited unexpectedly & she travels home to SriLanka to confront the couple and stop the wedding. Everyone involved has hidden motivations. Bunch of rich people backstabbing eachother. Some reveals weren‘t as well executed, but it was enjoyable.

SilversReviews I didn‘t like this book. 😊 1y

Read at the beginning of the month. Mixed feelings. Some parts were repetitive. All the characters are terrible, you would not like to have them as friends😳Some twists were predicted to me, others not. The end is a reflection of our characters antisocial personalities. It has good pace. 3.8 ⭐️

I really enjoyed this one! It was interesting to learn about Sri Lankan culture in the midst of a thriller setting. This one had some twists that I didn‘t see coming! I liked having both Amaya‘s and Kaavi‘s points of view. Amaya trying to stop her former best friend from marrying Amaya‘s ex boyfriend was quite entertaining. I think it would make a great mini series!

I really enjoyed it. Chapters are devided with Amaya telling the story, interviews and toward the end the victim. I like stories when everyone has something to hide. Everyone seems like a suspect.

I liked the idea of a contemporary mystery set in Sri Lanka and was compelled to read to the conclusion, but it just wasn‘t a fun read for me. I‘m a fan some good unlikable characters, but there was just something missing here. Maybe there were just too many twists.

Plenty of twists and turns. This was fun but not too deep.

I didn't like the short changing of POV that happens almost 3/4 of the way in. It felt odd, would have been better to space that out throughout the book.

The audio is excellent with a cast of narrators.

This one missed the mark for me. I didn't find the main character, Amaya, particularly interesting. Khaavi was a much more interesting character. The chapters from her viewpoint in the last quarter of the book were the best, in my opinion. I found her perspective more enjoyable. I feel like some of the threads, like the mysterious Alexander, would have been fun to explore. ⭐⭐⭐

I liked this until halfway thru when everyone was totally off kilter. Amaya and Kaavi had been friends since childhood until a mysterious rift split them and now Kaavi who is inordinately wealthy is marrying Amaya‘s ex boyfriend. Amaya journeys from California to her native Sri Lank to stop the wedding with some bagels plans. I will never reveal spoilers. This book is fine if you put your logic on ice

This month‘s #BOTM pick isn‘t my favorite… it gets off to a very slow start when Amaya learns that her ex-best friend & ex-boyfriend are getting married. Horrified, Amaya wants nothing more than to stop the wedding; she returns to Sri Lanka for the first time in 5 years to do just that. With separate timelines & interview transcripts & other perspectives, I wish the characters were more developed. None of them are likable but I loved the setting.

So, apparently there's a movie out (coming out soon?) called The Invitation. And apparently there are vampires in it. And I somehow mixed it up in my head thinking this book was that vampire wedding story. I'm 140 pages in, and no vampires. Honestly it could do with some cause it's freaking boring.

#BOTM TIME!!! Soooooo….I skipped picking Riley Sager for the first time since Final Girls. Which I LOVED, then I loved his next one a little less, and then the next less than before, and the next less than before, and then I‘m trying to convince myself that I‘m still a fan. Couldn‘t get into his last book…still unread. From the Goodreads reviews, I don‘t seem to be alone. But pumped for Blake Crouch! His books are always a wild trip!

Kimberlone I agree that Final Girls was the best one and I‘ve been disappointed that each next one has been less interesting. I think I might have picked Final Girls as my first BOTM, in fact! I also still seek out a new Sager, but now I just wait until I can get it from the library instead. 2y
LazyLibrary @Kimberlone Same. I still haven‘t read Survive the Night. I‘ve heard mixed opinions on it for sure. 2y
