"A deliciously tense ride." Ruth Ware, New York Times bestselling author of One By One Three couples rent a luxury cabin in the woods for a weekend getaway to die for in this chilling locked-room thriller by New York Times bestselling author Lisa Unger. What could be more restful, more restorative, than a weekend getaway with family and friends? An isolated luxury cabin in the woods, complete with spectacular views, a hot tub and a personal chef. Hannahs loving and generous tech-mogul brother found the listing online. The reviews are stellar. Its his birthday gift to Hannah and includes their spouses and another couple. The six friends need this trip with good food, good company and lots of R & R, far from the chatter and pressures of modern life. But the dreamy weekend is about to turn into a nightmare. A deadly storm is brewing. The rental host seems just a little too present. The personal chef reveals that their beautiful house has a spine-tingling history. And the friends have their own complicated past, with secrets that run blood deep. How well does Hannah know her brother, her own husband? Can she trust her best friend? And who is the new boyfriend, crashing their party? Meanwhile, someone is determined to ruin the weekend, looking to exact a payback for deeds long buried. Who is the stranger among them?

A wonderfully suspenseful book focused on 3 couples and how they allow room for secrets and lies in their relationships.

Book 9 of ‘24.

Suffers from timeline switching - so one timeline slows down the overall pace for mainly exposition - and a criminal case of “no normal people talk like this”. I‘ve never read this author before but it feels in line with Lucy Foley or Riley Sager — popcorn mystery with a lot of red herrings and dead ends with unlikeable (but human) characters.

The premise of this book was very promising to me but fell short of great. I didn‘t connect to any of the characters due to the multiple points of view and overall number of characters. I also didn‘t like how drawn out the story was until the ending when everything rushed together to put a neat little bow on everything. I definitely wanted some more follow up about several of the characters. ⭐️⭐️

I didn‘t hate it as much as @batsy but it wasn‘t the best thriller I‘ve ever read. Some potential, but unrealistic plot line that felt like an add on. And my sympathy for rich, nasty people is always low.

bthegood This was a soso/almost pan for me - I have tried two Unger books and so far they have been soso's at best. 4mo

Main characters - Mako rents a cabin for weekend getaway for his wife Liza, sister Hannah, brother in law Bruce, friend Cricket and her beau Joshua. Trina/Cat and Henry are introduced and will pull the story together. Side character - The host of the rental – who has cameras everywhere and spies on people. Storm, guests cut off from outside world, -someone is out to get them. Low so/so, almost pan⬇️
Make a great day everyone 🍂

bthegood I found the relationship between Mako, Hannah and Cricket to be so unhealthy – it was a turn off. The overall reason the group is being “hunted” is too far of a stretch as well. There were many reasons one could want Mako dead or to punish Hannah and Cricket, but the author chose one that is almost unbelievable.
I finished to see how it ended. Second Unger book and have found I am not a fan.

Hannah has some misgivings as she leaves for a luxury weekend away with her husband, her brother Mako & his wife, & best friend Cricket & new squeeze. As the six friends arrive, the weather changes & the group are stuck in the isolated cabin. Furthermore there's something a bit off with their rental owner & the house has a tragic backstory. As the weather cools outside, inside tempers heat up, & it seems someone has a deadly agenda. (continued)

OutsmartYourShelf This author's books seem to be a bit hit & miss for me: I really liked Under My Skin but wasn't keen on Last Girl Ghosted. This one sits in the middle, it's quite good but I didn't really like it much. The characters are necessarily mostly unlikeable & the reader experiences most events through Hannah's eyes but the second strand of the story which is told by a character called Henry takes you out of the secret-filled cabin which dilutes the 6mo
OutsmartYourShelf tension. The stories do eventually dovetail but it only partly works. 3⭐

TWs: self-harm, infidelity, miscarriage, drug use, violence, animal cruelty/death.

This was clearly not for me, but I read till the end to see how it all resolves—and it resolves in a very bad way. Silly, and offensively silly at times. Furthermore, an insult to readers. And the author is proud to tell us it's her twentieth book.

My first Lisa Unger and I thought she did a good job of weaving the many dangling threads to create a satisfying story. I‘m not sure ALL the storylines were necessary but this was a good mindless listen for a lazy Sunday. #BorrowNotBuy #Hoopla

Finished this week & a soft pick for me. I like Lisa zinger & enjoyed the twists & turns of this one even if the reveals seemed a bit obvious to me. Loved the atmosphere of the secluded luxury cabin, but lots of characters (several unlikable) & side characters to keep track of & some didn‘t seem necessary to the plot and/or were red herrings. Still twisty & good tension building kept me picking it up when I could in a busy week with a new job.

This book has two storylines: in one, 3 couples with a lot of history vacation at a secluded cabin while a storm bears down & someone stalks them; the other is the story of Henry, a gentle soul we meet when he's 14 & his mother is murdered. I had my doubts that these stories would come together but they did. A soft pick.
Pros: Henry, a locked room mystery, vivid descriptions, Detective West, the emphasis on relationships & what makes a family. ⬇️

bookandbedandtea ⬆️ Cons: Mako (tho there'd be no book without him) Cricket, the unnecessary addition of the ghost story at the cabin, the time spent on superfluous characters (the chef and server) who felt like loose ends, even Bracken- who I found interesting- was completely unnecessary. I'd have happily read a whole book about him, the reasons for his voyeurism, and, especially, the reasons he was able to let go of that and begin a relationship with May, but ⬇️ 13mo
bookandbedandtea ⬆️ none of that had anything to do with the two stories playing out and took time away from those events. 13mo

Meh, this is not great. There's so much going on and yet I kept feeling like nothing new had really happened. There's also a wide cast of characters that you are keeping track of and I truly don't believe they are all needed. And in some cases just takes away from the core story.

And over all I just didn't like the writing and the random way people are described. . . I don't know it just hit me wrong. Not for me.

This was a secluded psychological thriller about three couples who vacation in a luxury cabin in the woods of Georgia. With the threat of a hurricane, hidden motives come to light, affairs are revealed, and a dark secret is unearthed, culminating in murder. It was a twisty, atmospheric read, told from multiple points of view with alternating timelines between the past and present. It was a twisty thriller that had my mind spinning, well worth reading.

Book 10

I listened to Secluded Cabin Sleeps Six, a novel about a family taking a weekend retreat that turns out to be anything but relaxing. The storylines are numerous and unexpected, with an entire portion as a red herring. Disappointingly, it wasn't the book I expected, but it isn't without merit. 3.5 stars

I can see why this one doesn't work for everyone, and I wouldn't say it's my favorite of Unger's, but it's a pretty twisty slow burn of a thriller that I quite enjoyed! It may have been because I read it all in one sitting, bc there's a lot to keep straight. But for a book that starts with one of those "6 people in a cabin during a thunderstorm" plots, it most definitely turns into something completely different!

Usually I tear through a new Lisa Unger book. This one took around 5 days to read, and is a low pick by me. The pacing would quicken only to be slowed down by backstory. The ending is the best part to me as all the twists are tied together. In the end, it's about the family we choose versus what biology gives us. 3.5 stars.

Well... All I can say is that I feel like I wasted the better part of a week trying to get through this book, it just didn't hold my attention from the beginning. There was also a LOT going on in this booj, possibly too much... It just didn't work for me and this IS my normal wheelhouse. So oh well, I bailed. Too much time wasted on this mess of a book.

As an audiobook, this could have done with a few more narrators. There are so many characters, with one voice it gets muddy.

There were a few solid moments but I wasn‘t too shocked by the outcome.

I really enjoyed most of this book, but one of the plotlines (involving the cabin owner) felt unnecessary . I felt it weakened the overall story and pushed the plot beyond credibility. If that had been not included I would have loved this story. I was still happy to have read it, as parts were really enjoyable and the main plot line was quite clever. I would love to know how others felt about it. 3/5 stars overall rating.

But the storm never seemed to be as dire as predicted and neither did the book. I really enjoyed the first three quarters of the book, but it fell flat for me in the last quarter.
