11-14-21: My 114th finished book of 2021! Chester and Colette, Chester‘s wife, are Americans traveling in Athens. When a stranger, Rydal Keener, spots Chester and is reminded of his father, he decides to follow him to see who he is. What follows is a bizarre series of events and much traveling that only one will survive. ⭐️⭐️⭐️ 👍🏼📖#️⃣1️⃣1️⃣4️⃣

*If you‘ve ever read Highsmith, in particular the “Ripliad,” you probably know what kind of book you‘re getting into—not always—but certainly her best known books are of a Hitchcockian persuasion. Reading this for #moviebookclub. I'm not sure if I like it yet or not. It feels a little noir.
Highsmith does noir so stylishly in her Ripley novels; this one is as bleak and depressing as they come. High stakes, tension and unremitting psychological pressure as Rydal,Chester, and his wife Collette are caught up in murder in Athens and Marseille.
I love Highsmith's plots and rounded, visceral characters but her spare and scarce style means it takes me an amazingly long time to get through her fairly slim novels. I was so happy when Virago released this edition as I so wanted to read the book but I'm a little averse to movie tie-in editions
