A Highland Christmas
A Highland Christmas | M. C. Beaton
23 posts | 33 read | 10 to read
Christmas is an ancient Roman festival, not to be celebrated by decent folk in the Scottish Highlands. Police Constable Hamish Macbeth has always loved the festivities, but this year his family is vacationing in sunny Florida. He is stuck with the long, lonely Christmas shift in freezing Lochdubh. A cranky old lady kicks off the holidays by reporting her cat missing. Then the Christmas lights and tree in a nearby village disappear soon after the local council voted to allow decorations. As Hamish finds a way to bring Christmas to the Highlands and make a little girl's dreams come true, he finds -- to his delight -- that he has the best Christmas ever.

Sorry for the review dump, but catching up after a week of just getting ready for Christmas and fighting off some sickness. I listened to this while driving to the outlet mall last weekend and it was a fun little story. Loved the Scottish narrator!!

I haven't read any of the Hamish Macbeth Mysteries but after this one, I think I will try to read the series. It was not a murder mystery book but a mystery involving missing things in the small Scottish highland town. The story was cute but it did leave me wanting more.
3.5 stars

KathyWheeler I love the Hamish MacBeth series. 1y

Recently, I happened to find and watch the TV show, so I‘ve been curious to check out the books. When I saw this one mentioned and found it on Hoopla, it became today‘s holiday themed listen. I thoroughly enjoyed it. There were some minor investigations of theft and lots of holiday cheer with friends and neighbors. I may need to listen to some of the others when I want a light change of pace from my more serious reading.

I think I would have enjoyed it more if I had read more in the series. Or maybe if I actually read it instead of audiobook 🤷‍♀️. I would read more from this author though. And I got my first #BookspinBingo!!!

A big improvement from my last few books! Saw a few others people give this a good rating and I needed something for my commute. This was short and sweet. I loved the narrator. Now I'm curious about other Hamish Macbeth mysteries. Good thing hoopla has a lot! #bookspinbingo #wintergames2020 #ReadNosedReindeer

This was such a sweet surprise! A quick, easy read for the holidays with lots of lovable characters, and Christmas spirit. I can see myself rereading this one every year. Four and a half stars. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨

This is a sweet Christmas story with a crime mystery twist. Hamish, the local constable, is celebrating the holidays alone since his family all headed for the Florida sunshine. He thought is would be quite but then Christmas lights and a tree are stolen along with an old lady's cat. In the course of solving these crimes he makes everyone's Christmas brighter. 4⭐

Listened to this very short 2 hour audiobook while I decorated the tree this afternoon. A sweet and schmaltzy mystery (no murder) starring Scottish policeman Hamish Macbeth, who always works in a pinch.

Anyone have any other seasonal mystery suggestions? M C Beaton is cozier than I usually like, and I‘m in need of a new audiobook or three to get me through the month 🎄🎄🎄

AlaMich I started listening to this last week but I thought the narrator was a bad fit for a cozy mystery like this. Sometimes I think I‘m overly picky about narrators though. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 5y
emtobiasz @Tamra ooh good idea! I like PD James 5y
emtobiasz @AlaMich I don‘t think that‘s too picky, but I didn‘t mind it in this case. I‘ve read previous Hamish Macbeth books but always liked the BBC TV series based on the character better (shhh!) 5y

I was looking forward to this as a fluffy, season-appropriate listen, but the narrator sounds for all the world like he‘s doing the voiceover for Dragnet. Totally the wrong tone for a cozy Christmas mystery! 😕

I am now feeling suitably Christmassy. 🎄And it's only just November!🤷🏻‍♀️

Hamish Macbeth has a busy Christmas on his hands. A cat's been reported missing, and someone's stolen the Christmas lights from a neighbouring town. 😧It's actually quite a sweet short novella about loneliness and community.

This was a short novella, and on this occasion didn‘t involve a dead body. Usually don‘t enjoy novellas because they lack depth, but enjoyed this one as we knew all the characters. Nice story, with a bit of a feel good factor towards the end. Now onto Death of a Dustman. This is a lovely series.

robinb I‘m determined to start this series this year...forgive me if I‘ve said this already. 🤣🤷🏻‍♀️😊 6y
Andrew65 @robinb They are quick and entertaining reads that you can fit between the other books. 😊 6y
Andrew65 @SusanInTiburon Hope you enjoy it when you get to it. I do love this light hearted (if murder can be light hearted) Series. 6y
SusanInTiburon @Andrew65 I know I will! I love all kinds of mysteries, and I have a real soft spot for Christmas themed books. 6y
Andrew65 @SusanInTiburon This one would definitely be a nice read for Christmas. Hamish is a great, but different, character. 6y

Not an awful lot of time to read today, so reading the Novella, A Highland Christmas, in the Hamish Macbeth Series. According to Fantastic Fiction this is book 15.5 in the series, so reading it before getting to the 16th book in the series. Love Hamish and time spent in the murderous Lochdubh!

AlaMich Uh, you know it‘s almost St. Patrick‘s Day, right?? 😉🍀 6y
Andrew65 @AlaMich 😂😂😂 Yes a bit of Christmas in early Spring never does any harm! 😂 Needed to Read it before I progressed with the series. 6y
AlaMich @Andrew65 That is a legitimate reason of which I approve!! Carry on!! 😊 6y
