#6 in this series. Another bizarre murder, and the sun cult is particularly creepy.

Carl Mørk gets a phone call from a colleague at Bornholm, but Carl doesn‘t have time to talk to him. Some days later, Carl, Assad and Rose learn that he committed suicide when he retired. The trio feel obliged to look into the cold case that has tormented the colleague the last 17 yrs, the death of Albertine.

I didn‘t see the twist at the end at all

Butterfinger I didn't either. 4y

I'm not sure I liked this one or not. I enjoy the camaraderie of Rose, Carl, and Assad and I am fascinated by the last 100 pages. But, I also feel some disjointness because of the underlying mysteries that recur from book to book. The 6th novel didn't mention the case where Hardy and Carl were attacked till halfway through it. And besides that one, the author adds Assad's history, Rose's complexities, and now his uncle's murder. Focus Jussi.

This cold case for Dept. Q is about a 17 yo girl, Alberte, who vanished years ago & was found dead hanging high in a tree on the Danish island of Bornholm. Det. Carl Morck & his assistants, Assad & Rose, discover a strange sun worshipping cult & a manipulator in Sweden & need to stop new murders while trying to find out who murdered Alberte. This is a true, dark historical story with twists & a surprise ending. Looking forward to the next book.

Andrew65 This is the series I‘ve got really behind on, only read the first Nice review. 4y
EadieB @Andrew65 These characters do grow on you but books are still too long. 4y

Andrew65 @EadieB That is what is rather off putting! 4y
EadieB @Andrew65 The books just do not flow and take too long to read. The stories are good but could be told with shorter content. 4y
Andrew65 @EadieB Totally agree, more snappy dialogue to help the plot along would help with this. 4y
EadieB @Andrew65 Definitely snappy dialogue would help a lot. Must be a cultural thing with these Nordic writers. 4y

EadieB Hopefully we will learn what Ronny wrote about Carl. To me the funeral seemed like typical family drama at a funeral. Except the part where Ronny wrote about killing his father and that Carl was involved. (edited) 4y
Butterfinger @EadieB I thought it was sad that the brother only cared about money and his father wasn't supportive of Carl. It made him appreciate Assad more. 4y

EadieB I liked that the investigation was centered on the island and thought the trio worked together better then when working in Department Q's office. 4y
Butterfinger I really enjoy the humor between the three. I laughed when Carl had to sleep with Assad. They are becoming a tight group. The ending with Rose suicidal attempt was awful. What went on during the hypnosis sessions? 4y

Butterfinger @EadieB I actually thought it was the main investigator. I thought it was his computer with the nude men. And he was trying to frame Frank/Atu because he was also gay. I thought the computer and the pictures were his, not his son's. 4y

EadieB They were all pretty strange people. I knew Atu was Frank when they mentioned that his new name had 3 letters. I was glad that Pirjo got her just desserts as she was very nasty. 4y
Butterfinger @EadieB I hated Pirjo. The concept of the similarities between the religions were interesting to me, but it just goes to show, you don't follow a human because they have fallacies. Joseph and His Brothers has an underlying theme of the same. Ancient Egyptian/Mesopotamian/Hebrew share commonalities. 4y

EadieB I think the hypnosis put her out of sorts again and Yrsa had to take over until Rose recovers. 4y
Butterfinger @EadieB do you think it is Rose's alter-ego or her real sister on the phone telling Carl about her suicide attempt? I don't know what to think. 4y

And something not-bookish: I went to the hairdresser today. I‘m so happy to have gotten my hair fixed, even if no one sees the changes.

TrishB I am dying to go to the hairdressers ☹️ not yet here though. 5y
AnneCecilie @TrishB We have begun to open up. The hairdressers have to follow the same rules as anyone else, 1 meter between customers and I had to sign a declaration that I was not sick and that the salon would keep a record of its customers for 2 weeks 5y

Riveted_Reader_Melissa @AnneCecilie Temporary? It‘s beautiful. (edited) 5y
AnneCecilie @Riveted_Reader_Melissa sorry, I mean that most of the way is not in the forrest. That‘s just a couple of minutes. Most of the way are apartment buildings with a tree here and there. 5y
AnneCecilie @LiteraryinLititz You log on to their page online and order the books from the library or other in the branch. When they‘re ready at your library, you get a text. 5y
Sharpeipup Taking the path less traveled? 😃 5y
AnneCecilie @Sharpeipup not exactly, it‘s a shortcut 5y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @AnneCecilie Well a temporary short cut through the woods is still nice on occasion. I thought you meant temporary as in construction coming soon and gone, which would have been sad. 5y

The trio is going to Bornholm because a police officer shot himself during his retirement party. He said Carl was his last hope. They start digging into this old murder; a girl was found dead in a tree, and the police officer never got to solve the case. There are many strange characters and a cult involved in this big mess. The last some pages were fantastic, and due to the cliffhanger I can't wait to read the next book. Too long. #NordicNoir

Tove_Reads It was again dragged out, and should be shorter. I liked that there was a lot of Carl, Rose and Assad together. The next two books will reveal a lot about Rose and Assad methinks! 5y
Andrew65 Yes make them shorter, more to the point and with more suspense as a result. 5y

The author gives the characters such realistic personalities that leave no religion unscathed. I appreciate the author's humor in having a crotchety old Danish man make this insensitive comment about Catholics: "Yes, they painted their bodies with symbols and chanted as if they were Catholics."

During the six-day lunar new year holiday, I didn't get to read a lot due to the traveling. But I managed to finish this almost 600-page Scandinavian Crime novel and feel accomplished for myself. I like Assad and Rose in the Department Q a lot more than the protagonist, Carl. However, the gender stereotypes in the book make me roll my eyes from time to time....Nevertheless, it's a wonderful trip.
