Wintering: A novel | Peter Geye
51 posts | 22 read | 70 to read
An exceptional and acclaimed writer joins Knopf with his third novel, far and away his most masterful book yet. There are two stories in play here, bound together when the elderly, demented Harry Eide escapes his sickbed and vanishes into the forbidding northernmost Minnesota wilderness that surrounds the town of Gunflint--instantly changing the Eide family, and many other lives, forever. He'd done this once before, thirty-some years earlier, in 1963, fleeing a crumbling marriage and bringing along Gustav, his eighteen-year-old son, pitching this audacious, potentially fatal scheme to him--winter already coming on, in these woods, on these waters--as a reenactment of the ancient voyageurs' journeys of discovery. It's certainly a journey Gus has never forgotten. Now--with his father pronounced dead--he relates its every detail to Berit Lovig, who'd waited nearly thirty years for Harry, her passionate conviction finally fulfilled for the last two decades. So, a middle-aged man rectifying his personal history, an aging lady wrestling with her own, and with the entire history of Gunflint. From the Hardcover edition.

I mean…I was pumped about this one, but it was sort of boring. I feel like both stories (there are two, which sort of combine into one) were just boring. I was left feeling underwhelmed.

People seem to love this one, but it just didn‘t work for me. The two storylines share characters (sort of) in a way that fails to distinguish them and some of the characters are inconsistently written. I considered bailing and probably should have. But hey, this was my #bookspin!

Kristelh I liked it. But maybe being from the area gave it a sense of place. I haven't read any others by the author. 2y
TheAromaofBooks Great progress!! Also in love with the colors of your afghan!! 2y
Hooked_on_books @Kristelh It‘s funny, it‘s one of those books that as I was reading it, I could understand why some people love it, so clearly it‘s me this time. And you‘re definitely right about the sense of place. It does evoke that for sure, and I always enjoy that in a book. 2y
Hooked_on_books @TheAromaofBooks Thanks! My mother-in-law made that. I think she did a great job! 2y

Loved this. I've been wanting to read it forever and intending to do so since Jolabokaflod 2018, when @guinsgirlreads so thoughtfully gave it to me. Its setting (northernmost Minnesota) is dark and icy cold, and so are the emotional states of many of the characters! 😜 But there‘s warmth, too, in the quiet moments of family and found family. Great wintry nature description, a slowish but suspense-driven narrative, and very fine writing. ❄️ 🛶 ❤️

guinsgirlreads Yay! Glad you liked it!! 4y
Eggs I lived in dark and icy Minnesota for 29 years 😳🥶 4y
Christine @guinsgirlreads Yes, it totally met my high expectations. Thanks again! ❤️ 4y

Christine @Eggs Haha, glad you lived to tell about it! I lived there for four years during college, and Wisconsin my whole childhood, although not in the northernmost part of either. 4y
Tamra I enjoyed it too. 😁 4y
Christine @Tamra So good! I'm looking forward to reading the first and last in the trilogy (I don‘t normally start with a second book, but I‘m really looking forward to getting the backstory from the first now). 4y

Every time the November time change rolls around I really start craving wintery reads (especially because I live in Southern California and therefore have no winteriness in my reality!). The tagged book has long been on my TBR, which I hope to remedy soon, but I‘d love recommendations for other great wintery/snowy/cold climate books. Thoughts?

Christine Image from of one of my favorite holiday albums, Sting‘s If on a Winter‘s Night; exercising great willpower to obey my self-imposed rule of no listening to holiday music until the day after Thanksgiving, but this album will be played on Nov. 24th for sure. (edited) 6y

Librarybelle I absolutely love this book: set in the 1800s in Iceland in the winter, about a murderess who has to stay with the law enforcement‘s family. If you‘re looking for something cheery, this isn‘t it. It is dark...I call it hauntingly beautiful. 6y

Bailedbailed

I am glad my #WinteringBuddyRead friends enjoyed this one, but it wasn't for me. I found the prose and characterization subpar, the 'mystery' uninteresting, and the father-son voyageuring adventure mind-numbing. Bailed a third of the way in.

batsy I'm praying to the book goddesses for The Lost Garden buddy read 😂😂 7y

shawnmooney @batsy @Cinfhen @TrishB @Anovelobsession @Tamra @ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled @JazzFeathers @LeahBergen 😂😂 Never mind my propensity to bail, I really should avoid buddy reads for the reason that I seem constitutionally incapable of reading a single novel devotedly the way most of you do, thus my buddy readers finish weeks before I do. Henceforth, my participation shall be termed 'buddy reading adjacent.' 😂😂 7y

Labs to MN are what koalas are to Australia. 😆 I finished this a couple of days ago and have been pondering. It's a 👍🏾, because the storyline propels the reader forward in a way unlike the previous two and I enjoyed the complicated relationships. His writing reminds me of Jim Harrison, who in the past I read a lot of. Something about the character types, place & time development. #winteringbuddyread

Tamra I wish I could be a Geye virgin and read all 3 novels without interruption in order. I think it would be a rich experience. I'm pondering the end & would like to know the reading buddies thoughts when everyone is finished. (edited) 7y

Imagine there is snow and frozen rivers in this photo. Imagine you're lost in the middle of nowhere in the winter with your dad and his secrets. And that's just part of what this book is about. The author nudges you along, sometimes gently and other times vigorously, making it difficult to put the book down. A good read.

There are tie-ins to previous novels, like this passage, but this novel and the others can stand alone. I'm enjoying how the characters & relationships are complicated. Geye also does a good job of building suspense with bits of foreshadowing here & there. (Maybe too many?) #winteringbuddyread

JazzFeathers Just ordered my copy from Britain. Should reach me in 7-10 days 7y
shawnmooney @TrishB @Tamra @Suet624 @JazzFeathers @Anovelobsession I hope no one minds, but I'm going to start reading this today or tomorrow, a few days early. The reason is I'm trying to discipline myself to only have five concurrent reads (not including audiobooks) and I will be finishing a book today, and then probably won't finish another one for a week or more. So I thought I better get this one started sooner rather than later. Bookish problems hey? 7y
Suet624 Go for it. I'll be starting in a few days too. I don't know how you read so many books at once. 😁 7y
shawnmooney @Suet624 For about a year and a half, I was reading 14 or 15 at once! I'm not sure what I was trying to prove, but I'm paring things down… 7y
Suet624 Do you watch movies that way too? 7y
shawnmooney @Suet624 Nope, but don't you watch TV programs that way? 😘 7y
Suet624 Hmmm... kind of a trick question cuz I don't watch tv very often. I watch sports. 7y
shawnmooney @Suet624 Sports? Wow you're so much butcher than me! (Which isn't difficult 😛😛). I have stumbled upon the insight that, for me, reading several books concurrently—putting one down and another up, reentering the narrative briefly and then moving on and doing the same—helps keep me on my toes and imprints the books more deeply. 7y
Suet624 Hahaha. I'm a bit selective - only Boston sports teams. I so appreciate that it works that way for you. With my Lyme Disease I can be forgetful - things get completely lost with my neurological issues. So I have to stay focused on only one book at a time. I'm impressed that it enhances your experience. 7y

Wintering is an exquisite slow burn of a novel. The setting in the Boundary Waters area is very much a character -- and is clearly well-loved and appreciated by the author. Geye explores how the sins and ghosts of the past weave through the generations to shape us. The way the story unravelled and moved forwards and back through time worked well. Great read.

I didn't expect to like this book because I don't typically enjoy books set in nature and the wilderness (I'm a city girl...what can I say?), but I adored this book. The character relationships were real and often heartbreaking. This book makes me want to go cozy up in a cabin in the mountains 😊

MrBook I have a house in the mountainous forest. Is that close enough? 8y

Highly recommended for Cormac McCarthy and William Kent Krueger fans!!! Geye sets his book in Gunflint and the borderlands of Minnesota/Canada which is known for big personalities, danger, and unbelievably good stories. Family history and murder tie in with a great cast of characters. I loved it!

I love to nap and I love to read. Sometimes this poses a problem! I'm loving this book though, so I think reading may win out this afternoon.

Caryl I've been meaning to read something by Peter Geye for awhile. I have: 8y
Bookworm83 @Caryl Read that one first! I found out that it starts the story about the family in Wintering. I plan on going back and reading it to get the full picture. 8y
Coleen I am right there with you re: reading & napping. The older I get, the more the naps seem to win out. 😩 8y

A story about survival, fathers and sons, and the North Country of Minnesota that was so vivid I could almost smell the pine trees.

Spending the weekend with one of my favorite authors. Love being back in Gunflint. The outdoors, fathers & sons, love, families, small-town (and beyond) politics. Just trust me and read Peter Geye.

Booksnob I love Peter Geye. He's being featured on my blog, booksnob, for the month of June. 8y
