This was not chosen by my book group for this year, but I still wanted to read it. This was so well written- I felt that I was in 19th century Iceland, and I felt all the emotions of each character, or reaction to a character. So so good on audio too, but I‘m glad the group didn‘t choose this. It‘s also incredibly sad, and the discussion would just be how terrible this or that was. Fantastic book

I am not generally a fan of books that make me sad, but this one was an exception. It was so well written, so evocative of time and place, and so thought-provoking. A 5-Star read for sure.

1) One of the schools I worked at this week had this display.

2) Got a Dodgers history book to listen to on off days.

3) My kids went to their hometown and brought back this candy from a shop there that makes candy canes.

4) One of my kids volunteers at a food bank. They sent them home with a box of veggies. I made soup.

5) Finally found my copy of Burial Rights yesterday. Long story. Just disappointed I‘ll miss the discussion.

7. Hannah Kent calls her novel a ‘dark love letter to Iceland‘ in her Acknowledgements. What does she mean by this? Did you read the novel in this way? ~from publisher reading group guide #LiteraryCrew #BuddyRead

PurpleyPumpkin Yes, I found her description quite interesting. It seemed apt to me! 2mo
IriDas It was definitely dark, but it also showed the humanity — the good and bad — of those involved so I would agree. 2mo
julieclair I agree that it was dark, and I could see it being a love letter to Iceland‘s stark beauty, but it didn‘t come off as very flattering to Iceland‘s people. 1mo

6. Death is a major theme in this novel, but it is also about life and living. When
Agnes faces the day of her execution all she wants to do is live, despite the harrowing nature of the life she has endured. Do you agree/disagree? ~from publisher reading group guide #LiteraryCrew #BuddyRead

Jerdencon I do believe the instinct for survival is deeply inherent in all of us…. And Agnes is no different despite her difficult life. 2mo
PurpleyPumpkin There were times when Agnes was on the farm that she just wanted it all to end, that the waiting was the torture. But when she was about to die, she, and those around her, wanted her to live. She was an intelligent and curious person so it wasn‘t surprising to me that she truly wanted to live. And in the end, she was surrounded by love and support which I think gives one a reason to live. 2mo
IriDas Agree? I agree she wants to live. Just because a person has a miserable life doesn‘t mean they give up. She has already fought for her life since childhood, she wouldn‘t give up at the end. Such a strange way for them to word the question. People with difficult lives are usually strong and fighters. It‘s people with soft and easy lives who often fold under pressure. 2mo
julieclair The fact that she wanted to live, and had support and possibly even friendship, made her execution all the more devastating. 1mo

5. Blöndal is the real villain of this piece. His dispassionate communications with
those whom he controls are filled with venom and spite. What did you make of his
decision to lodge Agnes with District Officer Jón and his family? What do you believe
happened at Stóra-‐Borg that caused Blöndal to move Agnes to Kornsá? ~from publisher reading group guide #LiteraryCrew #BuddyRead

PurpleyPumpkin I never really thought about that! I just accepted the explanation that money and location were an issue (at least I think that‘s what we were told at the beginning).🤔 2mo
IriDas I don‘t know what happened there. I couldn‘t even infer it from what was said. I think he was just a selfish jerk who didn‘t want a murderess in his home. But it‘s possible that his servants might have been starting to talk about him. It‘s obvious from the way they act that he is not a nice man. Maybe Jon was more respected than he and he wanted to flex his power? 2mo

4. Are Steina, Lauga and Margrét changed by Agnes‘s time with them? Has her
fate changed theirs in any way? ~from publisher reading group guide #LiteraryCrew #BuddyRead

PurpleyPumpkin They all felt like softer souls for having known Agnes. 💜 2mo
IriDas I think they all learned that the world is not the binary of good and evil. That the stories people tell are often just that, stories, with no truth. I think they were wiser and more compassionate at the end so her presence on their lives was a benefit and a tragedy. 2mo
julieclair I agree. They became less rigid, more understanding, and aware that sometimes people are better, or at least more layered, than we have been lead to believe. 1mo

3. Fate and destiny are major themes in this novel, for Agnes seems fated to have come to the end she does. Could she have escaped this destiny? Was there a turning point in her life that she might have avoided? ~from publisher reading group guide #LiteraryCrew #BuddyRead

PurpleyPumpkin I feel that if she could have walked away from Natan at any point, she may have been able to avoid this outcome. But she just couldn‘t let him go. 2mo
IriDas While I do not believe it was fate, the circumstances of her life—her poverty and aloneness in the world—made her relationship with Natan and his power over her inevitable. He loved to toy with people and those like him know the weaknesses of others and how to manipulate and control them. She had no one. That is the person an abuser looks for so they have no way to escape. 2mo
julieclair In addition to the reasons already mentioned, I think her isolation and poverty were both powerful reasons why she just couldn‘t get away to a better life, away from Natan. 1mo

2. Agnes often comments on the ways in which she has been silenced, or had her story altered by the authorities. Why do you think she has such an anguished relationship to language? ~from publisher reading group guide #LiteraryCrew #BuddyRead

PurpleyPumpkin I felt like it was more an issue that the authorities, all men, wouldn‘t allow her voice to be heard for various reasons: she was a woman, she was smart, and she had aspirations above her station. Once she started talking with those who listened, the truth finally came out. 2mo
IriDas Women in Iceland were traditionally viewed as negative. It doesn‘t go into it in the book but all women were believed to be manipulative and troublesome in that culture. They were generally silenced. I think her intelligence made her frustrated because it wouldn‘t allow her to “know her place.” She knew justice was being trampled on and would not be manipulated the way the men were trying. 2mo
julieclair Reading about all the ways she was silenced, ignored, or not believed was so very frustrating. 1mo

1. As we know from the Author's Note, Kent bases her book on the real life murders of Natan Ketilsson and the convicted Agnes Magnusdottir.

Link in the comments to a travel site from Iceland that gives some more background about Icelandic society and the use of punishment at that time. It's very informative!

Had you heard of this murder prior to reading? In terms of the book, what did you think overall? #LiteraryCrew #BuddyRead

Jerdencon This was a new story to me. I was in Iceland 2 years ago (beautiful place to visit btw!). I found it so interesting but sad. 2mo
PurpleyPumpkin I had not heard of these murders before. This was all new to me and almost shocking when I learned it was based on true events. 2mo
IriDas Finally finished. I had misplaced my book. :( I had only heard that the last person executed in Iceland was a woman. The book did a great job with the story, characters, and the tension of waiting for the inevitable. 2mo

The end dragged to the point that I was getting distracted by anything else. I split between the physical and audio. The audio was nice due to the icelandic names. But the time was so quiet i would only recommend if you need a calm book for anxiety and to go to sleep.

Based on a true story - Agnes Magnúsdóttir is charged with murder and forced to live on a farm in Northern Iceland while she awaits her execution. It is a slow-paced, atmospherically written and the perfect book to read in the winter. There are a lot characters throughout the book so it isn't an easy book to put down for a while and pick back up. Reading the Q&A with the author at the end of book really shows you where her writing style came from.

This is another that has been on my TBR for years and was my #Doublespin for January. This is the fictionalized story of Agnes Magnúsdóttir, the last person to be executed in Iceland. While she awaits execution, Agnes is sent to live with a minor district official and his family. We get Agnes own story and the views of the family and her visiting minister. The story moves slowly and there is no happy ending, but it‘s so good.

A historical fiction about the last woman to be executed in Iceland in the 1800s. I love how it humanizes her, showing that there‘s more to her story than “murderer.” The Icelandic setting is deliciously moody. But I think I have to give this a so-so for the pacing. Most of the book feels pretty mellow and moody, and then the last 50 pages everything breaks apart and it‘s so heavy and so dark. Good book, just needs to give more a bit earlier.

ReadingRover I think listening to it on audiobook gives the story more life. It really helped me to feel more connected with the characters and the whole chilly atmosphere. 3y

This is not what you'd call a cheery or uplifting read. It is, however, beautifully written. Kent skillfully creates an authentic sense of time & place - the bleakness, the cold, the poverty of 19th century rural Iceland all powerfully evoked. Agnes is also an intriguing character, your empathy for her building the more pages you turn. I love the way the bureaucracy surrounding Agnes' execution is juxtaposed with her raw emotions & her story of ⬇️

Thank you! So far it's as good as you promised.

Martta Yes I remember this one! 😁 Very unique atmosphere in the story if I remember correctly. The story and characters have stayed with me. I hope you enjoy it! 😊 3y

I would really like to see Burial Rites either as a miniseries or movie. I know that it was optioned as a movie about a decade ago and I haven't heard about its status the last few years, at least not since 2017. #littenswanttoknow

TheKidUpstairs I agree! This would make an excellent miniseries 3y
Deblovestoread Great choice! 3y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I need to read this one! 3y
melissajayne @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I haven't read it for a long time and I absolutely loved it; I would recommend getting an audio copy, as there are Icelandic pronunciations that I wouldn't have gotten otherwise. 3y

I read this book about 5 or 6 years ago and absolutely loved it; it also helped to listen to the audiobook, especially in regards to the Icelandic pronunciations. #letterb #alphabetgame

MallenNC That is a good one! I read it several years ago too but it still stands out for me. 3y
