The Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection
The Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection: Or the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life | Charles Darwin, John Wyon Burrow
With his revolutionary work The Origin of Species Charles Darwin overthrew contemporary beliefs about Divine Providence and the beginnings of life on earth. Written for the general public of the 1850s, it is a rigorously documented but highly readable account of the scientific theory that now lies at the root of our present attitude to the universe. Challenging notions such as the fixity of species with the idea of natural selection, and setting forth the results of pioneering work on the ecology of animals and plants, it made a lasting contribution to philosophical and scientific thought.

I was looking forward to this book as I have a strong biology/chemistry background. I really wanted to like it but couldn't get further than halfway due to Darwin's painful ramblings and long drawn-out arguments. While there is substance there (obviously, it's an historic work), the diction and argumentative structure just isn't there.

Should I be concerned that my library tracking app thinks Charles Darwin is fiction? Yes, I corrected it. It‘s now listed under Science.

1. Tagged. (Though debatable whether it‘s “underrated” in certain circles, I don‘t think it circulates through humanity the way it should...)
2. The Great Gatsby
3. The Book Thief (If it doesn‘t end up a classic, I‘ll lose my faith in humanity)

MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm @ozma.of.oz I‘m told I need to give it a second chance as an adult since I read it back in High School, but I can‘t muster up the urge to do so. 😅 4y

Got to go to the new natural history museum here in the Twin Cities! All sorts of fun about evolution happened today. They also had a great exhibit on lichen and a bunch of interact exhibits like making dioramas and sketching animals!

Another picture of our play, Inherit the Wind, as seen from the cast perspective. No, I‘m not over it yet. Readers make particularly good actors. And the fourth wall protects the introvert. If you‘ve never auditioned for a play or served as a crew member, find the opportunity and do it. Chances are you‘ll love it.

What's your favorite thrift store book find?

I was browsing my local thrift store's book section and found this! It's a beautiful, leather bound Origin of Species by Charles Darwin. It has beautiful illustrations and gold edges on the pages. I picked it up for only $3! 😁👏

For the full effect, here is one of my reading nooks in my house. I've had this chair for over 20 years. My end table had a built-in magazine rack, Mr. Z made the bookcase, and the poster is one of those that uses book text to make the image. Book is the one linked. The only thing missing is a footrest.

Zelma Edited to show more of the poster. 😀 7y

Look at what words can do.

Darwin had an idea - an absurd, unorthodox, beautiful idea. He researched his idea, thought about it, made observations, asked his friends about it, and then had the nerve to put it into print.

This is my motivation for today. The guy who was cool enough to say - "the view which most naturalists entertain ... is erroneous."

It's amazing how right Darwin managed to be. But then he was also meticulous and careful to test hypotheses and listen to others. An excellent scientist!

Day 25 of #Riotgrams: favorite quote.

"There is grandeur in this view of life, with its several powers, having been originally breathed into a few forms or into one; and that, whilst this planet has gone cycling on according to the fixed law of gravity, from so simple a beginning endless forms most beautiful and most wonderful have been, and are being, evolved."

I am looking forward to having read this, so between that and my fairly detailed knowledge of biology I can defend the theory of evolution while admitting where Darwin was wrong.

Just spent far too long trying to explain to someone on goodreads that "micro" and "macro" evolution are not distinct and the former makes the latter inevitable...

Random pic of the day. Here is my book art - the dark spaces in the photo is the entire text of On the Origin of Species. I wish I could collect more but I don't think Mr. Z wants a whole house of literary art.
