Winner of the Mythopoeic Fantasy Award for Adult Literature: In a world where darkness threatens, there is Sunshine . . . Although it had been mostly deserted since the Voodoo Wars, there hadnt been any trouble out at the lake for years. Rae Seddon, nicknamed Sunshine, head baker at her familys busy and popular caf in downtown New Arcadia, needed a place to get away from all the noise and confusionof the clientele and her family. Just for a few hours. Just to be able to hear herself think. She knew about the Others, of course. Everyone did. And several of her familys best regular customers were from SOFSpecial Other Forceswhich had been created to deal with the threat and the danger of the Others. She drove out to her familys old lakeside cabin and sat on the porch, swinging her feet and enjoying the silence and the silver moonlight on the water. She never heard them coming. Of course, you dont when theyre vampires.

On one hand, I can see the influence of this unique urban fantasy in books like Twilight or Legends & Lattes even. The unlikely combination of gory, sensual vampire horror, cozy community coffeeshop baking, and wry and funny narrator is a winning one in a lot of ways if a little tonally unexpected. But it‘s also so slowly and awkwardly paced, full of info dumps that make it harder to immerse yourself in the story, and feels incomplete narratively.

1. The tagged book. It was soooo boring! I wish I could have gotten my time back that I wasted on half of it. It was a DNF for sure.
2. Anything Colleen Hoover 🤭 I'll probably try out Layla and Verity but that might be it.

#ihavequestions @RaeLovesToRead

RaeLovesToRead I also am yet to delve into the world of Coleen Hoover! 1y
ShelleyBooksie This may be my fav prompt ever. I am loving everyone's responses!!!! I tried a Coleen Hoover and only made it 3 chapters before dnf. 1y

IndoorDame @TheLudicReader @KateReadsYA @RaeLovesToRead I have yet to try CoHo and seeing how many times she shows up in these responses is convincing me I‘m really not missing anything 1y
RaeLovesToRead @ShelleyBooksie Aww, thanks! 😊😄 1y
RaeLovesToRead @KateReadsYA @TheLudicReader @IndoorDame Ahh, but she's coming up for answer 2, so what does that mean? 🤔🤔🤔 I may give her a try when I've got through all my other books (in, like, a decade!) 😅😅 1y
KateReadsYA @RaeLovesToRead @ShelleyBooksie @TheLudicReader @IndoorDame I'm just not into books that are overhyped especially romance with no fantasy involved! I'm still new to reading so I have so much on my tbr and could care less about what's trending. I'm still stuck on books that everyone read years ago 😅🤭 1y
BookishMadHatter I have absolutely no desire to read anything by Colleen Hoover. Nothing against the people who genuinely enjoy her work, just that nothing sounds appealing to me so far 1y
KateReadsYA @BookishMadHatter same girl same. No shade for sure! If anyone loves her books, that makes me happy for them :) 1y

It took me a while to get into this book, to be honest I'm still not a massive fan of it. Whilst I enjoyed the world building and more 'realistic' take on vampires, I found the plot to be too tell and not enough show. The massive amounts of narration slowed the pace down, however Rae was a relatable character. There's a lot of info dump and though a lot was resolved by the end, there are still questions that need answers and there isn't a sequel.

This story is such a smart, interesting take on vampires. I absolutely loved it. Sunshine is taken by vampires one night & wakes up shackled next to Constantine,- a vampire imprisoned with her. And then all sorts of things happen...The world building is excellent—I would definitely read more stories in this world—& I love Sunshine & Con and the wholly believable, really smart way their story is handled. I‘ll be thinking about this one…

I don‘t run into a lot of books that I feel let down because there‘s no sequel/series…meet Sunshine. Sunshine is a 25 yo popular baker in her stepfather‘s small hometown diner who, after a traumatic kidnapping experience with a group of vampires, discovers how powerful her magic handling abilities have become since she was a child. She forms a bond with Constantine, a vampire who was also being held, and they manage to escape together and 🔻

robinb go on to try and seek out/destroy master vampire Bo (Con‘s nemesis and the boss of the kidnappers above).
First of all, my only complaint (and it‘s minor) at 475 pages I felt it was too long. The middle could have been tightened. However, it did serve the purpose of spending more time with these delightful characters (especially Sunshine) and that wasn‘t a bad thing. 🔻
2y
robinb Yes, it‘s a fantasy vampire book and yes it has similarities to Buffy and the Breaking Dawn series, but I became more deeply involved with the people here and absolutely loved it. It‘s hilariously dry-witted throughout and yet also tackles more serious issues like balancing the good AND bad in each of us and being terrified to step out of our comfort zone but doing it anyway. 🔻 2y
robinb Just be forewarned, the ending hints of more, but it‘s been 7 years…☹️ 5/5⭐️

TheAromaofBooks I haven't read this one yet despite loving most of McKinley's books. She's not a big sequel-writer, which just seems tragic in some cases. Shadows literally felt like the set up for a genuinely fabulous series, for instance. I guess some authors just aren't big into revisiting the worlds they've created!! 2y
robinb @TheAromaofBooks Apparently she‘s been on hiatus for several years (her husband passed in 2015), but she is reportedly working on something. I‘ll have to add Shadows to my TBR. Any others you recommend? 2y
shanaqui I'd really love more in this world, even if it isn't about Con and Sunshine... there seems to be SO much going on! 2y
robinb @shanaqui Yes, she did such a good job with world-building! There‘s sooo much potential for other things. 2y
TheAromaofBooks I love Spindle's End and have read and reread it many, many times. But it's a very rambly book and doesn't always work for people haha Beauty is shorter but one of my favorite B&B retellings. Another rambly one that I really enjoy is Dragonhaven, which isn't fantasy per se, just set in an AU of our own world where dragons are real and wildlife preserves have been set up just for them. 2y
robinb @TheAromaofBooks oh, great! These are going on my TBR! Thanks, Sarah. 🤗 2y
ScientistSam She's one of my favorite authors and I love most of what she's written. She changes genres a bit too. I love Hero and the Crown and the Blue Sword (set in the same world at very different times), Sunshine, and Beauty, plus some others whose titles I can't think of right now. 2y
robinb @ScientistSam oh great for these recs, Samantha! 👍 I‘m definitely reading more of hers. 2y

Okay, IMO this is the worst vampire book. There are vampires in the beginning, and the end, but the rest of the book is just a girl rambling, stream of thought, waste of time filler. Amazing world, but I didn‘t want to hear about it, I wanted to see it. Big difference. And when you‘re in any type of epic battle, give me details on that, not how your thinking about baking muffins at your bakery... ⭐️ I‘m not even sure what the story was about.

This is my fave kind of vampire book. The kind with a moral dilemma. Yes, they are thoroughly inhuman and alien. Yes, they murder people. And yet... this vampire is quite likeable, and currently the lesser evil. But teaming up means he'll be around to kill more people.

Leniverse @Bookworm54 @ravenlee It was excellent! I wish there were a sequel. Is there a sequel? Seems like there is plenty of room for further adventures. And I have questions. Is the Grandmother (and father) alive somewhere? What is Mal? What is the Goddess of Pain? 4y

The writing style takes some getting used to. It reads like a stream of consciousness. The world building is really solid and different from anything else I've read. Character development and relationships build slowly which i think makes it more realistic.

I miss Robin McKinley. Her blog hasn‘t been updated in nearly two years and I can find no sign of her through the internet. My favourite #RomanceNovels are #ParanormalRomance

I love the mix of action and the supernatural with the romance side. Many of these include some form of ‘mates‘ too, pairs that are destined to be together and know when they have met the one. I like that idea as it takes away the doubt people have in the real world 🥰

Pictured are the first books in several PR series I love and a stand-alone that I think counts...

There is so much more I want to know about this world, and it's a little info dumpy, but mostly I still enjoyed it very much. The tentative friendship/relationship that evolves between Con and Sunshine is so well done, and Con's vampirism is never romanticised -- he's still scary and unsettling, even as his sense of honour becomes clear.

Been rediscovering a book that was one of my favourites 10-15 years ago!

Not that I'm reading much today. I've been a little busy graduating. Helen Hippo came with me to see it through. :) After 29 years with me and three degrees, she's a bit battered. [I wish I was smiling better in this picture, but that expression is mostly me trying not to laugh.]

I loved this and I hated it, but you definitely have to read it, if you like urban fantasy. McKinnley's vampires are an absolute must. They're a total breath of fresh air and a world I would love to continue exploring. There's not a love triangle because there really isn't a romance, it's on a different level. But the lack of information is a real issue and I had a few other fundamental issues with the book too. But it was a good end to April.

Hard choice between pick and so-so. I liked a lot of the parts of this novel, but overall it didn't really wow me. I really liked the main character (nicknamed Sunshine) and her rambly voice--it felt authentic to her personality. I also liked how Sunshine wasn't always likable and how she described her job as a baker. The fantasy world was pretty cool, unique, although it annoyed me when McKinley used Sunshine to just info dump instead of showing.
