Code Name Verity meets I Am the Messenger in this riveting YA novel from Morris Award finalist Stephanie Oakes, in which three points of view are woven together in a story that's part Cold War mystery, part contemporary coming-of-age, and completely unputdownable. Molly Mavity is not a normal teenage girl. For one thing, her father is a convicted murderer, and his execution date is fast approaching. For another, Molly refuses to believe that her mother is dead, and she waits for the day when theyll be reunited . . . despite all evidence that this will never happen. Pepper Al-Yusef is not your average teenage boy. A Kuwaiti immigrant with epilepsy, serious girl problems, and the most useless seizure dog in existence, he has to write a series of essays over the summer . . . or fail out of school. And Ava Dreymanthe brave and beautiful East German resistance fighter whose murder at seventeen led to the destruction of the Berlin Wallis unlike anyone youve met before. When Molly gets a package leading her to Pepper, theyre tasked with solving a decades-old mystery: find out who killed Ava, back in 1989. Using Avas diary for clues, Molly and Pepper realize theres more to her lifeand deaththan meets the eye. Someone is lying to them. And someone out there is guiding them along, desperate for answers. At turns heart-racing, hilarious, and heartbreaking, The Arsonist is an intricate tapestryof love, loss, and the mysterious connections between us all.

Here are my two new picks from my monthly #bookcaseclub box. I‘m super excited about this unboxing. The synopses are wicked; both mysteries in their own rights. They are being added to my never-ending TBR pile.

This one took a while for me to finish. It‘s one of those books that if you‘re reading it it‘s enjoyable but once you put it down there isn‘t a rush to get back to it. I still thought it was pretty good though.

Adored this one. A mystery, 1980s Berlin, and the best seizure alert pug ever. There‘s a whole bunch of stuff going on in this book and some of it is fairly easy to see coming, but I enjoyed it so much I truly didn‘t care. (Also hi Litsy 👋 I‘m going to try to remember to post regularly again!)

shortsarahrose Yay! Welcome back! Also, you had me at “best seizure alert pug ever.” 7y

This book was so, so, so good! Three POVs, some fire, some mental health, some searching for a lost mother, some Cold War. ❤️❤️

I've heard a few mixed things about this book, and I'm still not sure whether or not I should read it. Loving the cover art though. #LibraryWishlist

Have any of my fellow Littens read this book? Would you recommend? Please let me know. ☺️

Librariana I was just reading an article about the wildfires out in California and commenting on someone else's post regarding these, so it... sort of takes a different symbolism to see this picture. I agree that it's a very attractive cover... a striking image. Based on the synopsis, I'd give it a go. Especially if it's a blend of historical fiction/murder mystery. Sounds intriguing! 7y
Bookladylinda I picked this book up just because of the cover, haven‘t read it yet. 🙄 7y

Cover betrayal! The cover is only vaguely related to the story of the book. This book is actually more of a historical fiction mystery (just less death--the than Sarah's Key.)

The book had a bit of a slow beginning and I found the historic chapters much more fascinating than the present time ones. That being said, this was a fantastic book that included a time period I love (GDR/Berlin Wall). Bit of murder & romance but lots of mystery and loss.

[DELETED] 3803335244 Oh good! I just bought this when it came out! So glad you liked it 📚💜 7y

So I loved this book. Was it perfect? Nope. Did I occasionally trip over a metaphor or description? Yes. Did the narrative occasionally get bogged down in coincidence or leaps of logic? Yes. Did it impede enjoyment? Not at all.

Three narratives weave together to take us from Monterey, CA to East Berlin to Ahmadi, Kuwait; from present day to the Cold War; from a high school dropout's essays to an Anne Frank-esque diary. Completely engrossing.

minkyb Love this review. Not every read needs to be a literary masterpiece! 7y

When I picked up this ARC, I was not expecting to learn something. But one of the characters is (literally) born during the Kuwaiti oil fires of the Gulf War, and one of the characters is attempting to escape the scrutiny of the Stasi in 1989 East Germany, and the rest? #itshistory, and I'm learning SO much. Plus, this cover is gorgeous! (Releases 8/22)

OOOOOO buddy. If you can get your hands on this, read it. Word of advice: read this in as few sittings as possible. There are a lot of tiny details that contribute to the big picture. Loved the almost historical fiction feel to it.
