80 posts | 73 read | 36 to read
Three years ago an event destroyed the small city of Poughkeepsie, forever changing reality within its borders. Uncanny manifestations and lethal dangers now await anyone who enters the Spill Zone. The Spill claimed Addisons parents and scarred her little sister, Lexa, who hasnt spoken since. Addison provides for her sister by photographing the Zone's twisted attractions on illicit midnight rides. Art collectors pay top dollar for these bizarre images, but getting close enough for the perfect shot can mean deathor worse. When an eccentric collector makes a million-dollar offer, Addison breaks her own hard-learned rules of survival and ventures farther than she has ever dared. Within the Spill Zone, Hell awaitsand it seems to be calling Addison's name.

I‘m so excited about this! I didn‘t read it all in one sitting which is really rare for me with GNs. Could just be because I read it in bed with a migraine, but I think it‘s because there was a lot to take in. The storyline is compelling and I can‘t wait to read the next installment! And the art style is sharp, filled with deep colors, and characters with incredibly expressive faces.

In this dystopian graphic novel, some sort of accident has happened, and everything within the area is called the “spill zone,” where bodies dangle mid-air, animals are mutated, and neon colors abound. Addison explores covertly and takes photographs of the devastation. The artwork reflects the tone of the story, with sharp lines and a varied color palette. I wish it had not been left so open-ended, but I guess I‘ll just have to read book 2.

I flew through this graphic novel that I had definitely picked up on a whim from the library! Went into this without knowing much, only that I‘ve seen it around a bunch and I absolutely loved it! The artwork is lush and beautiful, and the mysterious Spill Zone with all its creepy denizens really intrigued me. Can‘t wait to check out the next one!

Great story. 📖 Excellent artwork. 🎨

I found this by accident through my library's overdrive, and I'm so glad I read it. I'm excited now for the next one. If you like graphic novels and enjoy stories set in post-apocalyptic worlds, then give this one a try.

First book of the new year (finished last week). Scott Westerfeld talked about this book during a panel for SLJ's LibraryCon Live! (so many TBR additions!). It works so well as a graphic novel: Addison's increasingly difficult trips into the zone, the "conversations" between Lexa and Vespertine, the poor souls who were caught in the Spill. It was so good! I can't wait for the second volume, where I'm sure we'll get way more questions than answers.

A graphic novel (that is “to be continued“ grr) focusing on a young woman & what she does to support her younger sister, who has been traumatized by the events in the “Spill Zone”. Fans of dystopian and/or sci-fi narratives will enjoy this story.

Probably what one wants Book 1 to be- establish characters, show regular life, set up nemesis, and end on a cliff hanger. The problem is this is a $23 comic/book and not the first couple of comics. It has good artwork and it takes place where I live. I liked the doll character, but not much happens except establishment of book 2.

Creepy and awesome. I can't wait for the next installment! I've been looking for more excellent YA and Middle Grade graphic novels for my collection at school so I'll definitely be ordering this!
What other graphic novels would you recommend for grades 6-12?

TieDyeDude There were some good parts in this, and the next chapter may answer some questions, but I didn't think there was enough here for it to stand on its own. Also read an ARC that wasn't fully colored, so that might have lessened my opinion. Looking forward to book 2, though 7y

I haven't posted in what feels like forever... because I haven't been reading at all. I forgot that I had gone through a major reading slump during the beginning of my first pregnancy as well. I had also forgotten how badly I get hit with morning sickness...
Now that I've been on anti nausea meds for a week I'm feeling a little better - throwing up once or twice a day as opposed to 6 or 7x 😩 so I'm hoping to get through some easy reads before

Johanna414 summer ends and it's back to work on the 5th 7y

If you like somewhat post-apocalyptic graphic novels.. Might I suggest Spill Zone. It's kinda creepy, kinda dark, but it had me hooked and I'm hoping the next part of the story won't take too long to get here! Seriously, this was far too quick a read, but I'm intiriged.

What a fun and mysterious ride! The Spill Zone used to be Poughkeepsie before something weird happened overnight. You're not supposed to go in there anymore but Addie sneaks in to take pictures of the odd creatures that survive there to make money to support her sister. Her sister who survived the Spill Zone and has a weird Raggedy Ann type doll. I love mine but thank goodness it's packed away because I'd be freaked AF by it now. Check this out!

????
Imaginative and rendered in colors that give each different environment in the story a distinct quality. The titular "spill zone" undoubtedly reminded me of the abandoned city of Pripyat and the Chernobyl disaster, but it added fantastic elements that gave this story a unique yet still frightful twist. Atmospheric and subtly suspenseful. Looking forward to what Mr. Westerfeld has in store for us in the coming volumes.

Like the premise. Nuclear fallout and living with the aftermath. Addison is quit resourceful for finding a way to support her little sister, even if it's illegal. Still trying to figure out the doll though. Good or evil? Not sure. Wish I had known it was a series... would have waited for the sequel to be closer to coming out. #yalit
