Ice Storm
Ice Storm | Rick Moody
26 posts | 19 read | 13 to read
The year is 1973. As a freak winter storm bears down on an exclusive, affluent suburb in Connecticut, cark skid out of control, men and women swap partners, and their children experiment with sex, drugs, and even suicide. Here two families, the Hoods and the Williamses, com face-to-face with the seething emotions behind the well-clipped lawns of their lives-in a novel widely hailed as a funny, acerbic, and moving hymn to a dazed and confused era of American life.

This is one of my comfort movies when I'm feeling unsettled. Strange...because it's not a feel-good story. I enjoyed my re-read of the novel.

And I'm glad to be back on Litsy after a long break due to a massive project at work. All is better now. Looking forward to a Friday night scroll through Litsy!

Leftcoastzen I love both the book & movie too. Definitely not a feel good, but it sticks with me. 2y

11-16-21: My 115th finished book of 2021! In a 24 hour period, on the weekend after Thanksgiving in 1973, two families are falling apart. The Hood family and the Williams family. During this 24 hour period much will happen when everyone gets caught in an ice storm all out of natural proportions. Adultery, sexual awakenings, alcoholism and even death will visit these families. Very well written. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 👍🏼📖#️⃣1️⃣1️⃣5️⃣

Leftcoastzen I love this book. 3y

NBR: We can't have peaceful snowflakes coating everything, it all must be encased in ice!

It's pretty, but so destructive. Two large trees in our complex fell over from the weight of the ice, took up the entire root system too. Fortunately the power lines were spared but there's over 200K people in this area who are not so lucky. ❄️

A big ice storm overnight is affecting my favorite tree. 🤞🏻 it doesn‘t lose branches! Note the road too. Not too many people out at 7 AM today!

I have this book on my kindle but have never read it. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Megabooks @TheSpineView thanks! Dad has his second Covid vaccine scheduled. I‘m not sure whether it will be canceled or not since it‘s in the afternoon. We‘re not equipped for this in Kentucky. Usually only happens once or twice a year. 4y

Using my new mug from @sebrittainclark and the #Bestof2020 swap! I haven‘t tried the tea yet because we lost power last night and I didn‘t want to fumble in the dark for my infuser. We also don‘t have running water when the powers out. Luckily we have a gas stove so we manually lit it and boiled enough water for tea and cocoa. No word when we might be powered back up so I guess I‘ll be huddled under the blankets reading if anyone needs me.

Description - Ice Storm Book by Rick Moody
The national bestseller and basis for the Ang Lee film is a “powerful” novel of two troubled families during a blizzard in 1970s suburban Connecticut.

Klou After reading the synopsis for this book, it seems you chose pretty perfectly for this movie! Well done!! 4y
EadieB @Klou Thanks! I had other choices but did think this one fit best. 4y

(Day 30 - #IceDance)

*One of my favorite books, is “The Ice Storm,” so naturally, that title immediately occurred to me for today‘s prompt. Above is the author, Rick Moody & ambient themes from the book: Watergate (Barbara Jordan) & the Sexual Revolution (Gloria Steinem). Below is a montage of participants in the film: Ang Lee, Joan Allen, Kevin Kline, Sigourney Weaver, Christina Ricci, Tobey Maguire, Katie Holmes, Elijah Wood.

Cinfhen What a good cast!!!!! I Don‘t remember the film 🤷‍♀️ 6y
RohitSawant Need to watch this! Echoing Cindy, fantastic cast! 6y
gradcat @Cinfhen & @rohit-sawant It is a REALLY good movie, but it‘s not exactly action-packed. It came out in 1997, and it probably lost money...but you guys are right—great cast + great director = great movie! 6y

We had freezing rain overnight. The tree outside my window is gorgeous with all the ice but all the broken branches on the ground are not. I have to leave for work soon but I also scheduled my exam to take for my pharm tech license. April 25 is d day. Hopefully I‘ll have my act together by then!

DivineDiana 👍🏻 You will! Stay safe! 6y
CocoReads @DivineDiana thanks! I‘ve been doing the job since August but I‘m a horrible test taker. But I need it to keep my job so I just need to pull it together. My kids and hub all made it to work and said the roads are ok but the parking lots are terrible. I‘m hopeful maintenance has laid down a ton of salt by the time I get to work. 🤞 6y

Dragon I hope the temperature warms up soon! 🐉😀 6y
CocoReads Ah, this is warm. Tomorrow thesame and then we plummet back down. But I‘d rather drive in snow than ice. 6y
CoverToCoverGirl Same weather here! The roads are sooooo icy, my car should have skates instead of tires! 🥶 6y

CocoReads @CoverToCoverGirl once I chiseled my way into my Jeep, the roads were more slush than ice but I had a scary moment on one of the curves between work and home. 6y
CoverToCoverGirl Chisel, that is a great way to describe how I got into my car this morning too! I strongly dislike driving in these crazy conditions. I love my civic but it‘s not made to combat winter effectively. Hopefully chiseling won‘t be required by either of us again anytime soon! Have a safe drive in tomorrow morning. 6y
CocoReads Thanks! You be safe too! 6y
TheHeartlandBookFairy Up here in Holland Michigan we have the same thing. Lots of scraping on our cars after work. Just came in after a trip outside the dogs and it's snowing but it's a pretty heavy snow! I'd like to call a reading day for tomorrow but alas, work wants me to show up 😆. Stay safe! 6y
Tamra 😬 Stay safe! 6y
CocoReads @TheHeartlandBookFairy yep, I‘ve got to show up too—my hubs turned around halfway to work and came back home but he works in Bridgman. It‘s just raining down here now but I hear later we will be getting snow. And as the temps drop again, snow the rest of the week. Stay safe as well! 6y
Kaye Glad you got your steps done for the day. Be careful. That freezing rain is scary. 6y
CocoReads @Kaye, almost 10k of those steps were inside, plus we have a two block walk from the hospital to employee parking. But freezing anything is the worst, luckily it‘s just raining now but I hear it‘s supposed to drop and switch to all snow later. 6y
Wife 🌹 6y
DarcysMom Yikes! Be safe out there! 6y
CocoReads Today‘s drive was much better. Once I got off my road anyway. But the rains coming down and later it‘s supposed to freeze and change over to snow. 😬 6y
CoverToCoverGirl That‘s our forecast too for today into tomorrow.. holy cr*p .. hurry up spring! These are truly the worst driving conditions I‘ve ever experienced! 6y
CocoReads @CoverToCoverGirl yeah, and now that I work in healthcare-I‘ve gotta be there even when it‘s crappy. Drive home was fine but it‘s started raining again and the temp is dropping so 🤞for tomorrow 6y

What the trees on our property looked like this morning. It doesn‘t seem to be getting any better. Still really cold out and the rain is still coming. Too bad I am working. It would be a perfect day to sit in a comfy chair reading.

A great read and I think the movie did it justice! A great story that‘s really 2 different things. It‘s a coming of age story and it‘s also a story about the rot hiding underneath the veil of an upper class white family. I‘m really into these types of stories and I highly recommend this one!

@Cinfhen @Marchpane
I Can't Read is a song written by David Bowie and Reeves Gabriels for the 'Tin Machine' album in 1989.
Bowie released his own version of the song as part of the soundtrack for the film The Ice Storm ( based on the 1994 novel by Rick Moody).
Bowie's version was available as a single only in Germany and Scandinavia in 1997 and in Australia in 1998.
👇

TrishB The film stars such people as Kevin Kline, Elijah Wood and Sigourney Weaver. It opened in USA in 1998 but made an overall loss of 10M dollars. 7y

TrishB @Cinfhen I thought the book sounded good too. No recollection of the film though! 7y
Marchpane I recall the film being quite highly acclaimed, I'm surprised that it did so poorly. Also I think that Bowie changed the lyrics for the movie version and later regretted it 🤓 7y
Eggs I recall seeing previews for the film-icy blizzardy 🌨 frigid episodes bring out the best/worst in humans 7y

#ice #sizzlinsummerreads Sometimes a book grows more powerful in your memory as time goes by.Ice Storm is one of those for me. Biting and acerbic,it follows 2 Connecticut families in 1973 , as family life shifted again in the early 70s ,the parents lie to themselves and each other. The kids are angry , drugged & disillusioned, not seeing the promise of adulthood .Wreckage behind the well tended lawns. An Ice storm indeed.

Suet624 Great movie too. 7y

Moody's writing is absolutely breathtaking, but I feel like the book's profound message is lost on me. I don't really relate to depressed suburbanites of the 1970s, and I found the damage the parents doing to their children to be sort of horrifying. I will give Moody's other work a try because of his writing, but not sure his subject matter will resonate with me. ⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
