Stay Where You Are & Then Leave
Stay Where You Are & Then Leave | John Boyne
27 posts | 35 read | 37 to read
The day the First World War broke out, Alfie Summerfield's father promised he wouldn't go away to fight but he broke that promise the following day. Four years later, Alfie doesn't know where his father might be, other than that he's away on a special, secret mission. Then, while shining shoes at King's Cross Station, Alfie unexpectedly sees his father's name on a sheaf of papers belonging to a military doctor. Bewildered and confused, Alfie realizes his father is in a hospital close by a hospital treating soldiers with shell shock. Alfie isn't sure what shell shock is, but he is determined to rescue his father from this strange, unnerving place. . . ."

I was sure to I had my fill of World War I books. Well, that was before before I discovered one penned by one of my all-time favorite authors, John Boyne. This novel tells the story of young Alfie Summerfield's struggles growing up in London when war changes his life in ways he could never have imagined. Boyne writes with compassion and emotional complexity that always resonates with me.

5-stars for this middle school/young adult novel.

Heartwarming story about a child's love to his father and his determination to help him heal. We have all been there. If we could take someone else's pain, we wouldn't hesitate, but Boyne writes from a child's perspective and we see that a child doesn't care about hurdles. They are going to do what needs to be done, even if it may be wrong to an adult's way of seeing. Because they have a perfect love. #AuthorAMonth @Soubhiville

Another solid pick from Boyne. Very good, full of heart. Boyne touches on the trauma of the soldiers, the toll on the families left behind, the ‘feather men‘ (conscientious objectors), the horrors of shell shock, the suffragettes, and the treatment of foreign nationals when the WW1 broke out.👍

megnews I like John Boyne. But I‘m reading The Boy at the Top of the Mountain right now. Hitler‘s an actual character and it‘s a bit disconcerting. 4y

I had no idea this was a middle grade book. I just saw John Boyne and it was an auto buy. Poignant WW1 story about a boy named Alfie whose dad volunteers for duty and is active duty for 4 years until he ends up with shell shock and PTSD.

Cinfhen Ahhhh!! Good one!! 5y
JanuarieTimewalker13 @Cinfhen thank you!! This is fun!! Is it ok to put the hashtags in the comment section? Am I doing this correctly? 5y

Alfie's dad goes off to war. His mom keeps telling him that his dad is on a secret mission, but he is really in the hospital with shell shock. When Alfie discovers the truth, he does everything in his power to bring his dad back home.
A sad, lovely, hopeful book told from the POV of a child.
I will be on the lookout for more by John Boyne.

Samplergal It‘s on my list. I‘m going to read EVERYTHING by this author. 6y

Very good. A good and very emotional story, everyone should read it as it shows the effect WW1 had on not just the adults left behind but the children as well. Highly recommend

I loved John Boyne's "Heart's Invisible Furies" so picked this up when I was at the library. I think it might be YA though as it's very simply written and not very nuanced or lyrical like HIF was. Still. A sweet, hopeful story.

Just realized my bookmark matched the setting & story of my book! Stay where you are then leave is a World War One historical fiction novel. (And my bookmark features flounders field - and so does the cover of my book!) 🌺
I really enjoyed this novel. It was heartbreaking, yet the ending was happy. I really liked all the historical aspects to it as well.
3.5/5 stars.

This is my #green stack for #ReadingResolutions. I want to read #JohnBoyne‘s #StayWhereYouAreAndThenLeave:

“Alfie‘s dad joined the British Army. 5 yrs later Alfie and his mom are struggling. Though she claims his dad is on a “secret mission” for the government, Alfie fears he‘s dead. Discovering he‘s in a hospital, the boy secretly visits his dad, who is shell-shocked. Alfie carries out a plan to bring Dad home, whatever the consequences.” #TBR

A lovely albeit slow moving story of WWI.

“Janáček, that‘s what you said, isn‘t it? Austrian, were they? Polish?”

“English. She was born three doors down from me.”

“A curious name for an English girl.”

“Her father came here from Prague

“So half-Austro-Hungarian, half-English then.”

“She wasn‘t a fraction.”

"Alfie schüttelte den Kopf, wandte sich ab und zuckte zum hundertsten Mal an diesem Tag die Schultern. Er konnte seinem Vater den Grund nicht sagen. Nicht im Augenblick. Vielleicht später, wenn er älter war. Eigentlich wusste er die Antwort schon. Mr Janáček hatte sie ihm vor langer Zeit gesagt. Er hatte alles aus dem besten Grund der Welt getan. Aus Liebe."

Another sad and poignant Y/A from the author. This one based on WWI. The title is explained as you get into the book (and is really sad). Good look at all the social/political backdrop of the war too.
