Black American history from the 1950s and 60s is so important to learn about. I recommend Lewis‘s March trilogy.

Rest in Power, Representative John Lewis and Reverend CT Vivian. May you rest easy knowing that the torch for equality and justice has been passed.

When I was visiting a friend in Georgia a few years ago, she took me to a local bookstore (because she knows me well) and I was lucky enough to pick up a signed copy of the first volume of MARCH. These men will always be heroes to me.

Can't wait to see y'all's recommendations!

“Do not get lost in a sea of despair. Be hopeful, be optimistic. Our struggle is not the struggle of a day, a week, a month, or a year, it is the struggle of a lifetime. Never, ever be afraid to make some noise and get in good trouble, necessary trouble.”

The world lost a great person today. Congressman Lewis did so much for the U.S. & I‘m so sad he‘s gone. If you haven‘t read his graphic novel memoir series MARCH, get a copy; it‘s a must-read

A bonus #Recommendsday from John Lewis, this wonderful graphic novel trilogy , great to read for yourself and to start conversations with younger readers....and really a great addition to any school library.

And again John Lewis is a National Treasure, and if you can‘t read his memoir, tagged below & in a separate post, at least check these out.

Daisey I haven‘t promoted these as well as I should in my class library. Partly because I loaned them a few adult readers and partly because my set looks so nice in the slipcase. Time this fall to accept some wear and tear to get them in student hands. 4y

1* the March Trilogy is in graphic novel form which is great as it‘s more accessible to visual readers/learners. But really anything MLK based: his letters and speeches

2* Betrayal of US 1st amendment and hence intolerance. I don‘t feel qualified to speculate about other countries ...

3* chores, errands (gag), reading, walking, sleeping (not sleepwalking🤣)

4* nnnoooo. That would be fun though!

(Day 19 - #SitDown)

*As a member of CORE, Rep. John Lewis (D-GA) helped organize the first sit-ins in Nashville, TN (protest pictured above left). After those #SitDown protests, he participated in many other Civil Rights movements. As Chairman of the SNCC, he participated in the Freedom Rides, and was the youngest keynote speaker at the 1963 March on Washington. He has been arrested 45 times and also beaten. (Pic. right).

arlenefinnigan Excellent choice ✊ 5y

I would love to meet John Lewis and just say thank you! Thank you for fighting for decades, continuing to fight in the current climate and for giving me hope and encouragement. Today was hard. Really hard. If you can discriminate and take the rights away from one community, you can damn well try to take them away from others. No one is equal until we are all equal and given the same damn rights!

I love this quiet reflective moment as Lewis passes the pyramids and realizes the monumentality of his task. March takes the time not only for artistic moments like this, but also to relay an amazing amount of facts and research. I thought I knew a lot about the civil rights movement, but I certainly had a great deal to learn, even after having been Mississippi-born in the midst of this historic movement. The spirit of this book needs to live on.

moranadatter What do you think of the format? Are you interested in trying more? 7y
Donna_sBookMinute @kmdartist -- I don't know of another comic app to compare this one to. I like the option to read by panels. There is another series I'd like to read; but before I use this platform, I'm interested in finding other options. I've grown accustomed to the bookmarking and note features in text ebooks. I'll have to see what else is out there for graphic reading. This is totally new to me. Do you have experience with comic or graphic novel apps? 7y
moranadatter @Donna_sBookMinute Oh! I meant graphic novels. I've played around with a few apps. None are great, but ComiXology is pretty good. It would be nice to be able to make notes. That's something I wouldn't do with a paper comic. (edited) 7y
