Assassin's Blade: The Throne of Glass Novellas
Assassin's Blade: The Throne of Glass Novellas | Sarah J Maas
Celaena Sardothien is Adarlan's most feared assassin. As part of the Assassin's Guild, she's sworn to her master, Arobynn Hamel, yet Celaena listens to no one and trusts only her fellow killer for hire, Sam.In these action-packed prequel novellas to "Throne of Glas"s, Celaena embarks on five daring missions. They take her from remote islands to hostile deserts, where she fights to liberate slaves and avenge tyranny. But by acting on her own terms, will Celaena truly free herself from her master, or will she suffer an unimaginable punishment for such treachery? This bind-up features all four of the previously published e-novellas along with a story now available in the US for the first time, "The Assassin and the Healer."

3✨ Some say this should be the first book, some after the third book. Wherever it is placed it hurts. It‘s shows us the depth of our main characters hurt.

#LittensLoveSJM #ToG Novella 5: the assassin and the empire: Well, we did it. We read it and got through it. We knew the ending and we were…sort of…prepared. And honestly, I‘m glad I read these novellas after getting to know Celaena a bit. A lot of people find her unlikeable. I think that yea, she can be difficult at times, but man-she could win an Olympic gold medal in trauma. This girl has been through it. ⬇️

StayCurious It will be interesting to read the next book where she is embracing herself as Aelin and ready to fight for her kingdom and her people. I liked Sam though. I wonder if I will start to feel that way about Rowan. Maybe I shouldn‘t focus so much on romance and focus more on what Celaena needs to do (😆 me laughing knowing that I will always focus on the romance) 3d
BarkingMadRead Even knowing it was going to happen, it was so devastating! Looking forward to the next adventure! 3d

StayCurious @BarkingMadRead yes it will take me time to recover 🥺 3d
5feet.of.fury I liked it as Celaena‘s origin story, but the relationship with Sam didn‘t feel fleshed out enough & arobynn‘s deception was so obvious… I‘m looking forward to getting back to wyrdkeys & wyverns & magic & Manon 3d
mcctrish @5feet.of.fury I have to say I was surprised her relationship with sam wasn‘t more considering she went to bed with Chaol quickly -ish or did I miss her first time?! Also I need more witches 3d
Roary47 @mcctrish I think Chaol was her first time. I seem to remember (and I could be wrong) that she wasn‘t going to wait because the future was so uncertain. In reference to Sam and her getting close and waiting with us knowing it was too late for a future together. 3d
LiseWorks I hate Arobynn so much after this book. I loved Sam, even though I knew the ending for him, knowing that it was partly his fault for going after these two guys. If we had read this book first, it would have been a shock not knowing about what happened to Sam. 3d
5feet.of.fury @Roary47 I think you are correct @mcctrish the physical connection, but also the rest of it, she doesn‘t open up to him about her secret, she still thinks of them being enemies just months ago when “he loved her for years”, they just seem never on the same page.. even in the context of traumatized teens I‘m like “what do you like about eachother??” 3d
mcctrish @5feet.of.fury yes! After this story their relationship feels less explained because of everything it wasn‘t and @LiseWorks Celaena and Arobynn seem more toxic 2d
Littlewolf1 Hey all, sorry I didn‘t pick this one up with you. I had planned to, but I had read it at the beginning of the year when I wanted to do this reread originally. I‘m on board with the next book though, when do we start? 2d
Butterfinger Why won't she even consider Aerobynn as the traitor? As many times as he manipulated, beaten, and betrayed her in this book. I don't get it. Is he a twisted hero (for giving her a purpose, a life) after escaping Terasen, a deranged father figure (who took her to concerts), or just a classic #StockholmSyndrome case? 2d
StayCurious @Littlewolf1 I will post about the timing shortly 1d

I found some of the stories to have a lot of filler. I can see why the reading order is so controversial with that ending, ultimately I‘m glad for where we read AB with #littensloveSJM because I don‘t know if I would have thought much of Celaena if we‘d read it 1st & that ending is bleak with no real inkling of what‘s in store. The best part for me was the little things we had heard about in the 1st 3 books getting fleshed out.

StayCurious I agree I liked knowing the characters a bit prior to going into this 3d
mcctrish It did feel like we got a bit too much review with each story and I don‘t understand how people loved this 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2d

#LittensLoveSJM #ToG Novella 4: The assassin and the underworld: Celaena is back in Rifthold and after all the talk of Arobynne we get to meet him in the flesh. I think he‘s such a piece of work. Poor Celaena and poor Sam, growing up in that world. And now Celaena has seen that there could be something better for her and Sam. ⬇️

StayCurious By the way, the more we see Sam and get to know him, the more I‘m waiting for my heart to be torn apart when you-know-what happens. Will we grow as attached to the idea of Aelin and Rowan? One novella left: brace yourselves! 🥺 (edited) 1w
mcctrish It took a long time to get to the point of Sam and Celaena being together but Arobynne is solidly a MoFo 1w
See All 8 Comments
BarkingMadRead Yikes Arobynne is a lot. I hate that is going to end the way it‘s going to end. Ugh 1w
5feet.of.fury Her & Sam‘s backstory is all over the place. Rivals, allies, friends, “I‘ve been in love with you for years” lol. Celaena acted like a real butt most of this story (edited) 1w
LiseWorks Well, to me, it took a lot for Celaena to admit she loves Sam. She is making a lot of mistakes, which shoes her age. I agree about the heartbreak 💔 1w
StayCurious @5feet.of.fury she acts like a real butt in the other books too - but I can see her character growth 1w
Butterfinger This is the one that bored me until she got stuck in the sewage. We also learned about when her love of music began. 1w

#LittensLoveSJM #ToG The Assassin and the desert: Celaena is sent to train with the master of the Silent Assassins in the desert as punishment for defying Arobynne - after he beat the crap out of her and did god knows what to Sam. Celaena meets a girl named Ansel who has had a difficult traumatic life, just like Celaena - and she makes a friend.⬇️

StayCurious She sees a different way of existing than under the cruel tyranny of Arobynne and she starts to see a change in how she views Sam. Honestly this novella was kind of boring and I was just waiting for the moments where she mentioned Sam and seeking any info that we might find useful in the rest of the series. I didn‘t much like Ansel and was not invested in her story. 2w
mcctrish This novella didn‘t seem to have as much story to it as the previous ones, although I guess it sets up a future Celaena would rather live in and makes further connections for when she takes over the world 2w

5feet.of.fury I didn‘t find this one as engaging either, it gave the background in the Asterion horse other than that I was like “just get back to Sam!” Lol 2w
BarkingMadRead @5feet.of.fury 💯💯💯 2w
LiseWorks I felt betrayed by Ansel. I did find it a bit slow. 2w
Butterfinger I found myself liking this story. The peace would have been such a balm to Celaena. So different from Aerobynn. This group showed more compassion, more like Celaena's values. 2w

#LittensLoveSJM #ToG The Assassin and the Healer: this was a great story and another example of Celaena finding a way to help someone and do something for the greater good. She meets Yrene, a wannabe healer who is adrift and feeling lost in the wake of Adarlan‘s conquest. She teaches Yrene some valuable lessons and gives her the means to become what she is destined to be. I have a feeling we will be seeing Yrene again. ⬇️

StayCurious Also, Arobynne is a horrible master and I hope Sam wasn‘t punished too badly. I can‘t believe what Celaena dealt with in Arobynne‘s guild. (edited) 3w
mcctrish I hope we do meet Yrene soon ❤️ and I look forward to hunting Arobynne down and killing him 3w

#LittensLoveSJM The Assassin and the Pirate Lord: What a wild swashbuckling ride this was! We get to see 16-year-old Celaena, brash and reckless, sent with Sam on a mission by Arobynn. They are supposed to make a deal with Rolfe, the Pirate Lord, but Arobynn wasn‘t completely forthcoming in the reason for their mission. We see elements of Arobynn‘s corruption and Celaena starts to lose trust in her Master. She also grows closer to her rival Sam⬇️

StayCurious We see that despite being assassins, Sam and Celaena have morals and care for people. We see their history and the bond that will soon grow between the characters (I‘m already getting the tissues handy). Can‘t wait to read more from Celaena‘s early days. 1mo
LiseWorks I found her reckless and not trusting in Sam. He almost died here. I'm not sure her plans are in the best interest of her friends and allies. And because we know about his future, it was a nail bitter. 1mo

A bit of a slow start, but then I really got invested. Celaena is an appealing, if somewhat frustrating, mix of accomplished and naive, snobby and self-assured, yet vulnerable. Her quest for independence is a brave one, when I remembered how young she is. Her trials are engaging and the story is pretty gripping. I saw all the pitfalls coming miles away, but I think you‘re supposed to? Even though she does not. Great lead-in to a series.

The small nuances and Easter eggs throughout that were mentioned before were fun to read. Cried of course. I am Celaena Sardothien… and I will not be afraid. 😭 Can‘t WAIT to read the rest

Each novella‘s fine, and overall the book works fine, but I spent the entire time thinking about how awkward it is to read a set of novellas in the middle of a series of “regular” novels, even though I can‘t defend the argument that it should be read first…because if you read it first, you‘ll know too much to be surprised about the ending of the 2nd book. So, in the wise words of my old lit professor, this book is [AWK].

5⭐️ I think I gave this a lower score, though, not by much, the first time I read it. But going back and re-reading it, I realize that for me, it is a five star. I feel that I was truly with the FMC throughout the entire book. Maybe this is because I read the whole series and have already made a connection with her. I don‘t know why, but I love the story, and it ripped my heart out every time. 😭 If you know you know.

I still don‘t regret reading it third though, otherwise Idk if I would have had it in me to like other new characters and continue on with the series. This is a great book. Go through all these novellas that made up the Assassins Blade. I can see where it said to read this prequel after the third book. Yet - YET - these would have been such a better introduction to Celeana‘s story in the Keep. This explained her plight more than “book 1”.
Underground novella was not a favorite of them, but it still showed quite a detail in who Celeana is as a person.
