Book 2 of 2023 was fine but not a standout for me. I‘ve been in a graphic novel mood lately and I liked the last 2 better. 🤷🏻‍♀️

This graphic novel rocketed up to the top 5 of my all time faves. So much heart, so much love - a very considered book about bullying but also about a kid figuring out who his real friends are, and how to use his own voice. I adored it. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This book is good but not the best because it‘s a nice storyline and artwork but for me it felt like I was wondering off in my mind

I really like it! it shows what it would be like to be bullied, it was also realistic. so for me its a thumbs up!

This was an amazingly fun graphic novel that I so loved and enjoyed reading so much.

I did not enjoy the first half of this book AT ALL, but the ending made it worth it. It manages to touch upon a lot, but the key themes include what it means to be brave, recognizing bullying, and changing cultural norms (like the culture in your school). #bbrc #teenangst #middleofaseries

I'm a huge fan of this series and the messages it brings to kids. Although, it seemed more like high school in this one. I love the diverse cast of characters and the artwork is amazing!

Yay! Another reader in the family! So thankful for graphic novels that worked like magic for both my daughter‘s. This youngest one whizzed through #Awkward and is rather enjoying #Brave. What more could a book loving mother ask for?

I think this one would be fine for late elementary to early middle school kids, but not so much for me. The message was good and important, but a little to young for me. Usually when I read YA younger books, I am still thoroughly entertained, so I was surprised that wasn‘t the case with this one.

Awesome book, think all 10-14 yr olds should have this book at the top of their reading lists!

I believe all middle school kids should read this! It addresses bullying, including being left out and being teased by friends, dress code unfairness, dreams for the future, and navigating middle school as if it is a real-life video game. I think all tweens/young teens could relate to the issues in this graphic novel. It is a fast, fun, and thought-provoking book!

Jensen loves to draw and dreams of being an astronaut, despite the fact that he sucks at math. He gets through his day in middle school by treating it like a video game with levels and bosses to beat. He mostly manages to avoid his two biggest tormentors, but it takes him a while to realize that he‘s also being bullied by people who he considers friends.

His quest to be seen and included is very sweet.

Super cute. I have to say I think I liked this more than Awkward. My son has been waiting for me to finish, so I'm passing it on now!

Middle school is not easy—I say that as someone who went through it (ha,) & as someone with two kids mired in it (& facing some of the same challenges in the story)—& this book deals with a particularly difficult aspect...bullying. Jensen is odd man out because of his size, glasses, & daydreaming about Mars. If he can find the courage to stand up for himself, no easy thing, maybe, just maybe, things will change. Great for readers of all ages.

Time for a “I‘m about to go on a trip and don‘t want to start something I won‘t finish before I go” book. So, Brave, the sequel to Awkward, it is. The first book was a fun read and I expect this one will be as well. And when I finish, I can get down to the difficult task of picking which two books I want to take with on an overnight trip.

Do your child a favour. Get this graphic novel for them. It is so beautifully written and constructed. The author deals with heavy topics such as bullying with a lot of heart and sensitivity. Awkward, the first one in this series, is just as brilliant.

Jensen gets through each day at middle school by treating it like a video game, fraught with dangers. This charming #graphicnovel is chock full of diverse characters and deals well with the issue of bullying. It even made me cry! Creator Chmakova immigrated to Canada when she was a teen; she knows what being an outsider feels like. #kidlit

Nice intertextuality in this middle grade graphic novel. 😀

Just as great as Awkward! Maybe even better! By thinking of middle school as a video game, Jensen is able to survive each day. When the school's newspaper crew enlist Jensen's help, Jensen's outlook on the school's culture will change. Like Awkward, the cast of characters in Brave are so diverse! I loved how this #graphicnovel portrayed the issue of bullying, making it clear that verbal bullying is still bullying even if it's coming from friends.

Well this was a lovely middle grade story about friendship, bullying, and changing to world (or at least your school)! Great choice for upper elementary and middle school readers! #24in48 #readathon

Loved this! Bully culture feeds into so many people's lives. Jensen starts out being the outcast who people make jokes about. He daydreams a lot, loves to draw and has no idea he is being bullied. That all changes though, and Jensen's video game school survival technique doesn't work anymore. This book takes a tough topic and brings it to the forefront in a very gentle way. Brick by action brick we can change bully culture.
