A Little Friendly Advice | Siobhan Vivian
10 posts | 1 read | 3 to read
Siobhan Vivian's sparkling YA debut... now in paperback! Ruby's turning sixteen . . . but the day doesn't turn out to be as sweet as it's supposed to be. Her long-lost father shows up, and Ruby doesn't want to have anything to do with him. Instead, she wants to hang out with her friends--loyal Beth, dangerous Katherine, and gossipy Maria. They have plenty of advice for her--about boys, about her dad, about how she should look and what she should be feeling. But really, Ruby doesn't know what to think or feel. Especially when a new boy comes into the picture . . . and Ruby discovers some of her friends aren't as truthful as they say.

Hi all, it‘s been a while since I posted but I was hoping for a little advice. I am starting IVF in May and I am looking for a book to read that‘s got some info about what to expect and maybe some tips on how to increase chances but also how to survive! I am struggling with reviews on Amazon as the reviews can differ so much. If anyone has any first hand recommendations it would be much appreciated 💜

Cat picture to thank you for reading 🧡

Froedrick wants to help show off my #jb mail from the last few days! Thanks ladies for the sweet cards and Michelle thanks for the stickers- I can‘t believe you found scratch and sniffs! Anyone getting cards from me in the next few weeks, be sure to check for smelly stickers! LOL.

JoScho ❤️❤️❤️ 6y
AmyG He is so cute. ❤️ 6y
Hooked_on_books Did you know there are scratch and sniff stamps? Who knows, I may have to use one next time I send you something. 🙃 6y

Soubhiville @Hooked_on_books I‘ve gotten quite a few of the scratch and sniff stamps, they‘re awesome! My post office hasn‘t had them, and I haven‘t tried ordering them. Their so nostalgic though! Did you have sticker books as a kid? 6y
Soubhiville @Mimi28 ah, I was wondering where you found them. Cool! 6y
Hooked_on_books @Soubhiville Oh I definitely had sticker books as a kid! I loved collecting stickers. 6y

Repost from @Jess7 :

Calling all European Littens AND Littens that have VISITED #London, #Paris, or #Rome!! 🙋🏻‍♀️ I'm planning a 5-year wedding anniversary #vacation with my husband for 9 days (3 days in each city) in mid/late June 2018. Neither of us have been to Europe, and we could use all the inside travel info, tips, tricks you got!🤷🏻‍♀️#England #France #Rome

#Vacation - #ReadingResolutions (bookish bc I‘ll read on the long flights😉)

Podie For nice london skyline views - (for free!) try the sky garden. You have to book your time in advance on their website and spots fill up pretty fast so do it early- but if you get lucky its an awesome view and you don't have to spend a cent. 7y
Podie In Paris skip tourist bus tours. Public transport is inexpensive, buy your own bus/metro tickets and do your own bus/walking tour. The arc de triomphe is a good place to get nice view of the city - much less steps than the eiffel tour and not as crowded. And i highly recommend taking a trip to versailles if you can. Take a whole day there and explore the palace and gardens and don't skip marie antoinettes estate - beautiful gardens! 7y
bookandcat In Rome see if you can get tickets to the Scavi tour below St Peter's Basilica - SUPER cool but tickets are limited. Also eat as much gelato as possible (I love going for unique flavors like honey or combining flavors like coconut and blueberry scoops). 7y

Happy1848 Northern Europe - take a rain coat 7y
Happy1848 #glasgow - visit the Horseshoe pub; if you're in the south of France or south Wales go to a rugby game. They are mad for it. #london go to Camden town market. Visit #barcelona #amsterdam and #florence you won't regret it 7y

Advice needed! I am looking for a new kindle case. I like the hand holder on this one, but the elastic at the top is all stretched out.

Do you love your kindle case? What brand do you have? Thanks Littens!

Chrissyreadit I have the kind that you can drop and it won‘t break. Or run it over... I am a dangerous reader. I just need protection over comfort. Not much help...sorry. 7y
ReadingVampire I actually owned this same one you have when I was reading on my voyager. I now own the Oasis 2, and I bought a cover on Etsy. I love her cases and own them for my iPad and iPhone as well. Here's the link: https://www.etsy.com/shop/superpowerscases?ref=s2-header-shopname Happy case hunting!!! Hope you find what you're looking for! 7y
SheilaChew @Puredragonstar Thank you! I looked at the site and found a Harry Potter one - we may have a winner! 7y

✨Hello, my fellow Littens. 😘
✨I'm really into space, technology, and all science. The more I read Science fiction books, the more I want to write my own either short stories or full novel. I was wondering if any of you had any tips and advice or can recommend me some books for the writing process or maybe even some books about technology/space/science that could help educate and prepare myself?📚
✨I hope this makes sense! Lol please help! 💜

Ross Same here, to all of that! I actually enjoy reading books about writing for their own sake. And from those authors of fiction of all kinds (and comics) that I‘ve met at the Cons, one suggestion consistently recurs: Techniques of the Selling Writer by Dwight V. Swain. A lot of the books on writing that I‘ve read tend to either explicitly or implicitly reference that book, but the source is so much more useful. (edited) 7y
Ross More recent examples of some very good help with the engineering of stories comes from K.M. Weiland‘s Outlining Your Novel and Structuring Your Novel (she has workbooks that act as helpful companions, too). Weiland also has a podcast and is a published author of historical and speculative fiction. (edited) 7y
Ross One last suggestion: Secrets of Story by Matt Bird was really entertaining and useful. I‘ll stop now, but I hope you have fun writing! 7y

abbsinwonderland @Ross omgosh! You are awesome. Thank you so much for all the recommdations! 7y
Ross I hope it helps! 👍🏽 7y
MemoirsForMe Great suggestions here! I just wanted to add a few books that really liked: 7y
MemoirsForMe Bird by Bitd: Anne Lamott 7y
MemoirsForMe And since you're thinking Sci-Fi: Stephen King's On Writing. 7y
abbsinwonderland @UwannaPublishme thank you!! 😆💜 7y
Nat_Reads Beautiful, straightforward and interesting! 7y
Ross Ooooh, yes. King‘s On Writing is good stuff! 7y
abbsinwonderland @Nat_Reads yes! That's perfect. Thank you!!! 💜 7y
abbsinwonderland Y'all are making me even more excited to start on this little adventure 7y
cathysaid Anne Lamott's Bird by Bird is irreverent, relatable, and brilliant. 7y
mrozzz NaNoWriMo is a good challenge to write when you're ready... it's currently going on and they have a forum on their sit for technical queries about world building etc and prompts on twitter. Also not specifically science but Stephen King's On Writing and Bird by Bird are both great. 7y
abbsinwonderland @cathysaid thanks for the recommendation! It's been added. 😆💜 7y
abbsinwonderland @mrozzz do you have a link for the NaNoWriMo? 7y

Litsy friends, I need your advice. I have a short book I'm reading for book club, but I am not enjoying it AT ALL. Kindle/Goodreads says average read time for this book is 3 1/2 hours, but the Bookout app where I'm tracking my reading says I've spent 1 1/2 hours reading it so far and still have 3 1/2 hours to go. Do I waste another 3 1/2 hours of my life on this book, or do I bail??

CareBear Bail! 7y
LauraBeth Bail! You could be spending that time reading something you enjoy! 😀 7y
TheLibrarian Bail! 7y

Reecaspieces BAIL! Too many good books out their to waste time reading one you don't like...that's 3 hours you will never get back 🤓 (edited) 7y
Dolly Bail and tell others why. That info is helpful too! 7y
batsy Definitely bail 😀🎈 7y
Tamra BAIL 7y
cathysaid Read the last ten pages to assuage your guilt, then bail!! 7y
DeeLew Bail. Life is too short to spend time on books you don't enjoy. 7y
Ashley_Nicoletto Definitely bail. 7y
Avanders Bail. And I‘m someone who has a hard time doing that... and still recommend it ;) 7y
AlaMich Bail! 7y
merelybookish I might skim. That way you kind of know what happens without spending much time reading it. 7y
TrishB Bail! 7y
TheQuietQuill Bail! Life's too short to read something you don't really want to ;) 7y
peaKnit I'd bail, that will give you something to talk about at book club right there:) 7y
Melissa_J Definitely bail! 7y
Andrew65 I also have difficulty in bailing but if that bad why put yourself through it. That 3 1/2 hours will seem like 24! 7y
mom2bugnbee I am 100% in favor of bailing. If they're good, bookish people, they'll understand, and you can still contribute to the conversation. 7y
tammysue Bail 👌🏻 7y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Bail!!! I usually wouldn‘t say that, but I‘m learning that there are too many awesome books to waste time on one that‘s not!!! 7y
AmyG Here‘s what I learned from a book club friend. The art of the skim. Skim the whole book so you get the gist and can at least participate in the discussion. 7y
Izai.Amorim Follow your heart! You know what you want to do: bail, right? Just do it! 7y
MaryAnn1 It took me 45 years to finally learn to bail. Think of all the great books I missed out on. Bail!! 7y
ReadingRover If you hate it don‘t finish it. There are so many other books you could be enjoying. 7y
kspenmoll A little late in answering but I agree with advice you have been given. Life is too precious to waste time on a book that just does not do it for you. Hope you bailed! I do! 7y
SilversReviews I would stop reading. 7y

Jess_Read_This 😏Excellent advice.. 😂 8y
drokka Wash your butt and btw, don't put this near fire, in fact really don't put it near fire if you're wearing it. What the heck kind of clothing is this? And when did it become important for clothing manufacturers to save us from ourselves. 8y
ReadingRover Lol. What it's of clothing is this? 8y
JanuarieTimewalker13 Whoever came up with that tag must have sat next to a smelly butt once and decided to advise accordingly. Lol. The problem is, the people with smelly butts probably won't read the tag. Such is life. Was this on a pair of underwear? Otherwise it would make no sense, at all, yet the sentiment is still wonderful. Lol 8y
BookMusings I feel like I've seen a comment like this on a clothing tag before... what brand? 8y
BookMusings @drokka I've seen the fire comment for years, I think it means the material hasn't been treated with fire retardant, which a lot of materials/fabrics are. 8y
drokka @bookmusings Maybe it's a regional / legislated thing then? I'm in Canada and I've never seen it on clothing here. Now I'm curious, I'm going to research this a bit. 8y
Lwiesman 😂 8y
ReadingRover Now I'm curious if my underwear have these comments on them🤔 8y
BookMusings @drokka I'm in BC and I've seen it for sure in fleece stuff. I had a pair of pants in high school, 15 years ago, that said this about fires. Many pieces of my kids clothes also say it now. Have you ever tried to set a pair of socks on fire? 🙈🙈 I have. They are fire retardant. Lol I should say, I did not try to set my fleece pants on fire...🔥🔥 (edited) 8y
TNbookworm 😂😂😂 8y
moranadatter 😂😂😂Thanks! 8y
bookaholic1 So in order to keep away from fire while wearing, woman need to walk slower to not start bush fires 😂🤗😎 8y
