I Remember Nothing | Nora Ephron
39 posts | 63 read | 53 to read
Nora Ephron returns with her first book since the astounding success of I Feel Bad About My Neck, taking a cool, hard, hilarious look at the past, the present, and the future, bemoaning the vicissitudes of modern life, and recalling with her signature clarity and wisdom everything she hasnt (yet) forgotten. Ephron writes about falling hard for a way of life (Journalism: A Love Story) and about breaking up even harder with the men in her life (The D Word); lists Twenty-five Things People Have a Shocking Capacity to Be Surprised by Over and Over Again (There is no explaining the stock market but people try; You can never know the truth of anyones marriage, including your own; Cary Grant was Jewish; Men cheat); reveals the alarming evolution, a decade after she wrote and directed Youve Got Mail, of her relationship with her in-box (The Six Stages of E-Mail); and asks the age-old question, which came first, the chicken soup or the cold? All the while, she gives candid, edgy voice to everything women who have reached a certain age have been thinking . . . but rarely acknowledging. Filled with insights and observations that instantly ring trueand could have come only from Nora EphronI Remember Nothing is pure joy.

I‘ve been an Ephron fan since I interviewed her in college a whole other lifetime ago. Counting blessings now for my new favorite lunch spot, negative results, & a little escape with an old friend.

3.5☆I Remember Nothing was Nora Ephron's final book. This followed I Feel Bad About My Neck which I enjoyed more. It was more upbeat I found. I dont know of course if Ephron knew she was ill when she wrote this collection but it definitely has a darker feel, more thoughts on death and dying but I still enjoyed this book. Her wit, cander and wisdom still shine through as she reflects on her life. It also prompted me to pick up her novel Heartburn.

I‘m a middle-aged lady who only ever has clean clothes on her body because she has a Post-it note that says “laundry” that she sticks on the cellar door. I‘m pretty sure I need stronger reading glasses now, too, but I‘ll never remember to buy them when I‘m out again because, well, my brain is cheese. It was nice to have Nora Ephron hang out with me for a little while. Not my favorite of hers, but I was looking for a pal and not a Pulitzer.

I‘m randomly picking older #NFNov books from my shelves in between library drops, and I‘m so glad I eeny-meeny-miney-moed this title. I really enjoyed reading Nora‘s take on life and aging. I was even entertained by her thoughts on what is now dated technology - email. I sure wish she was still walking in this world with us.

jmtrivera I haven't read this, but I usually like Ephron's writing, so that's disappointing! 5y

Exactly what I needed as a companion to an afternoon of work/errands. Nora Ephron is undeniably honest about her personal failures (marriages or flopped movies), insecurities about not being able to remember anything (facts, details, faces), and she easily provides a refreshing & relatable burst of joy despite discussing subjects not usually considered humorous.

Will forever love her wit and her words. 🙌🏻💗☺️

This was a quickie. I have no strong feelings about it one way or another. [See comment for spoiler.]

JoyBlue It was interesting to learn that Heartburn (which I rated fairly highly last year) had autobiographical elements. I either didn't know or didn't remember that. 6y
Zelma Oh yeah, it was completely the story of her marriage, which made it so intimate and raw and honest. 6y

“And I survived. My religion is Get Over It.”

I have a weakness for nonfiction essays, especially ones that make me feel like we‘re all human, it‘s cool, we all have shit. I enjoyed these snippets of Ephron‘s personal and professional life and her random observations on the modern world. Written in 2010, it‘s a little dated, but still relatable. Her audio narration is flawless; her humor perfectly deadpan.

Pamwurtzler ❤️Nora Ephron. There‘s something about her that I find relatable and so funny! 6y

I've really got to bail. Hits so close to home it hurts. Notice it's the large print edition? Besides my memory, I'm losing my hearing and vision, too. I thought I had a good sense of humor about it I mean who doesn't love Nora Ephron? Cuts too close to the bone for enjoyment for this old gal.

ReadingEnvy 🤗I've definitely had to put a book aside because of similar discomfort. Maybe at some point it will be funny, maybe not. 7y

Bailedbailed

I almost never abandon a book and I know Nora Ephron is adored. Maybe it was this book in particular that didn't work for me. I'll try another one when I get through more of my library holds. But this one filled me with indifference almost from the very start and there was no sign of that changing. I decided it was time to let go and move on to something else.

I absolutely love Nora Ephron. This collection, in particular, features several anecdotes that feel like a behind-the-scenes look of Mad Men era Madison Ave.

Also, I got this book and then spotted this matching table. Book photo fate? 😂

After Melville, I thought I'd read something lighter and funnier. Whew! That's when I turned to Nora and her wonderful essays. This time she talks about getting older, the ups and downs of going digital and the lessons we learn from our good and not so good relationships. Or at least that's what she can remember! 😊 And this book just happens to be pink and green. Too bad Nora left us so soon. #augustphotochallenge @TheSpinecrackersBookClub

The first essay caused me to snort and then laugh out loud over and over. It's a good thing I was listening to it while walking alone through the park. Knowing that Ephron died two years after this was published made her reflections on aging particularly poignant.
