Castle: A New Translation Based on the Restored Text
Castle: A New Translation Based on the Restored Text | Franz Kafka
Franz Kafka's final novel tells the haunting tale of a man known only as K. and of his relentless, unavailing struggle with an inscrutable authority in order to gain entrance to the Castle. Although Kafka seemed to consider "The Castle" a failure, critics, in wrestling with its enigmatic meaning, have recognized it as one of the great novels of our century. Unfinished at Kafka's death in 1924, the manuscript of "The Castle" was edited for publication by Kafka's friend and literary executor, Max Brod. Both Brod's edition and the English-language translation of it that was prepared by Willa and Edwin Muir in 1930 have long been considered flawed. This new edition of Kafka's terrifying and comic masterpiece is the product of an international team of experts who went back to Kafka's original manuscript and notes to create an edition that is as close as possible to the way the author left it. The "Times Literary Supplement" hailed their work, saying that it will "decisively alter our understanding of Kafka and render previous editions obsolete."Mark Harman's brilliant translation closely follows the fluidity and breathlessness of the sparsely punctuated original manuscript, revealing levels of comedy, energy, and visual power that have not been previously accessible to English-language readers.W. H. Auden likened Kafka to Dante, Shakespeare, and Goethe as the single most important writer of his age. Here, in this new edition, is a Kafka for the twenty-first century.

In my opinion, Kafkas strength are short texts. The Castle is one of his unfinished novels, but it would've made a greater impression if he had kept it short. To me it seemed likevKafka himself didn't know where he was going with this text. Still, I'm glad to have finally read this one as well.

Beautiful lessons/discussions of our journey through life, agency, impact, government efficiency, and tolerance/acceptance. Would not recommend if conventional writing styles are your jam. Would not recommend as a small, side read to be completed while multitasking through every day. Would recommend if you enjoy existentionalism or modernism. ⭐⭐⭐⭐

2. The Castle by Franz Kafka. Hopefully in the next 4 or 5 days 🤞
3. I'm banking on 2. I have a pretty involved metafictional piece on my pile next. (Insurrecto by Gina Apostol)

Another page of quotes filled in my bullet journal. Final quote for this page:
"Of course I'm ignorant, that remains true in all events and is extremely distressing for me, but it does have the advantage that the ignorant man dares more, so I shall gladly put up with ignorance and its undoubtedly due consequences for awhile, as long as my strength lasts." - K.

My first Kafka!! I really loved this, I see why people make such a fuss about him. Even tho I was never too clear on what was happening, the atmosphere and writing just carried me along and it was never hard to read like I thought it might be. I‘m definitely a fan now!

Tamra Kafka is wonderfully convoluted and scary. The Trial is a nightmare. 6y

Continuing ploughing through audiobook backlog. Never read any Kafka before, it‘s a huge blind spot in my knowledge of ‘classics‘, hope I‘ll appreciate it as much as everyone else!

1. Lawrence of Arabia. It's the best movie ever! 🎥
2. Talking and knowing new things about a person if that's one of the first dates, and if we get along, then any activity will become great experience (except holding hands😜)
3. Don't think I have one, but I like odd ones more
4. I quite liked the Castle and read it to the end, but it was just a half of my book. Then novellas came and broke my brain. Never got through

TK421 I love Lawrence of Arabia! My dad is just about the only other person I know that doesn't think it is slow and boring. It has some of the best cinematography ever. 6y
Violetta @TK421 I got really lucky to see it at the cinema on a big screen. That was the only chance to see the restored copy, and all my friends got scared of its length, so I went alone and never regretted. Totally captivating, and so many moments to laugh, feel sad or shocked. How can it even be boring? 😲 6y

I love the cover of my book because it shows the winding, confused path toward the castle. The entire book was dead ends and curvy twists in our Land-Surveyor's attempt to get to the castle. The people are so ridiculous that it's funny, yet infuriating because talking gets them nowhere. It's so perfect that Kafka never finished the novel because wasn't that kind of the point? It was just going to keep going in circles and never truly finish—right?

Tamra That is the perfect end to it! 6y

This artwork is called "The Impact of a Book", by Mexican-born artist Jorge Méndez Blake. Extraordinary! (The book is El Castillo, by Franz Kafka). Here's an interesting interview with the artist: http://metalmagazine.eu/en/post/interview/jorge-mendez-blake-between-the-visual-...

I can‘t think of any greater happiness than to be with you all the time, without interruption, endlessly, even though I feel that here in this world there‘s no undisturbed place for our love, neither in the village nor anywhere else; and I dream of a grave, deep and narrow, where we could clasp each other in our arms as with clamps, and I would hide my face in you and you would hide your face in me, and nobody would ever see us any more.

In day 4 of my ' Prague on the Page' class on Czech literature, we came to Česky Krumlov, the village and Castle that inspired Franz Kafka to write : The Castle. The book is amazing and I highly recommend anything by Kafka!

This novel never seemed to come together the way The Trial and The Metamorphosis did. I was ultimately a little disappointed. Maybe it was just the translation.
