Oh, this book broke my heart. It came into my life at the exact right time and it might take awhile to recover from this one. The main friendship is so beautiful and that makes the main character‘s grief even more painful. I will definitely be rereading this one several more times in the coming years.

I'm new here, and I've been trying to update my profile (what I've read/want to read). I spend hours browsing books and when I've gotten a stack I need to start reading.. I can't decide! I usually get so indecisive that I just start looking for more books ?.
Now that I have Litsy to pressure me, I think I'll finally start with "Before I Let Go" by Marieke Ninjkamp ??‍♀️

Corey goes back to Lost to mourn the loss of her best friend Kyra.

I totally expected a different kind of plot twist at the end of this book.

Finished my first book for readathon (nearly 2 hours in)! I don‘t know what to make of this story as I still can‘t decide if it was believable or what it was going for...but it was a pretty good read as I tried to figure that out. I picked it up cause of a student rec so this is one book off my TBR pile.

bibliobard @LibrarianRyan I just kept waiting for things to be explained and the things I wanted explained never really were. Not to mention the way the townspeople acted seemed so bizarre. Like I get that small towns can be weird...but this felt like a cult. 4y

I had such high hopes for this one but it fell very, very short of the work. Not only were the characters flat, there were glaring plot holes. What a waste of a great premise.

awordandawhisper I totally agree. I thought the mental health rep was super problematic as well. Glad I‘m not the only person who was disappointed in this one! 6y

3⭐️ BEFORE I LET GO is a young adult novel that speaks to the kind of friendships two teenage girls can have, dreaming about their future, their hopes and their hero‘s. One of the things I liked most about the book was the idea of Cory‘s quest to discover what happened to her friend, despite the many obstacles put in her way. https://www.bluestockingreviews.com/blog/before-i-let-go

The best part about this book is that, gathered from the author's note, I think I would really like the author. Other than that, I'm disappointed. The book feels like it's missing so much. I was left thinking, "That's really all there is?" Plus, I just couldn't suspend my disbelief that the people in the town, especially the parents, would be so awful. I'll try to put up a review on my blog soon.

kgriffith I‘ll be interested to come back to your post once I‘ve read this. I remember reading Stone Butch Blues for English Comp and a cisgender heterosexual man said that he found the harassment and abuse that the protagonist experienced to be unbelievable and excessive. I had had lovers and partners who‘d experienced exactly what the protagonist did. It‘s not hard to believe when you‘ve seen it, and I expect Nijkamp is working from experience. 6y
tonyahoswalt @kgriffith I don't want to say too much because I don't want to spoil it for you, but I'll interested in hearing your thoughts after you read it. 6y
tonyahoswalt @kgriffith I wanted to clarify that I didn't get the impression that the townspeople or her parents were treating her badly because of her sexuality, but because she was bipolar. 6y
kgriffith @tonyahoswalt Noted, that gives me a different/additional lens for sure. Not that MH shittiness is any better or worse than sexuality shittiness, but at least I know what to be on the lookout for 😉 (edited) 6y

I am almost halfway through this book, and since around the first 25 pages of the book, I've been convinced that the two characters, Corey and Kyra, are actually one girl with multiple personalities. I hope I'm wrong, because if it's true, it was way too easy to figure out.

I didn't love this book. The idea was interesting but the characters were all really underdeveloped and so many aspects of the story didn't make sense. I was constantly waiting for the twist to the story and it never came. Everything was just lackluster.

I don't get what was the point/intention of this story. The characters felt flat, the suspense was non-existent (it was pretty obvious what was going on), the chapters written in script were randomly thrown in and really ruined the atmosphere. I liked mental health representation (Kyra had bipolar disorder), but overall, this book just quite didn't do it for me.

While this may be an unpopular opinion, this one was a pan for me. It tried to cover some heavy topics, but the disjointed timeline, the hint of the paranormal and the dark nature of how an entire town (her parents included) treated/used/abandoned a bipolar teenaged girl...quite frankly deeply disturbed me. I also felt the character development was lacking here. It was almost a DNF for me. Maybe others will appreciate it...just not my cup of tea.

kamoorephoto I think it‘s a love-it or not book...it was pretty disjointed in ways, but the big topic at hand, bipolar disorder, was approached in a way that I thought was haunting and isolating, and it made it a heart-wrenching read for me. The book absorbed me, quite like the freaky town that it was set in (and would never want to be stuck in)! I don‘t think it‘s for everyone but I think it‘s a valuable look at friendship and mental illness 👍🏼 6y
Cinfhen I'm glad I passed on the ARC!!! Thanks for saving me the hours I would have lost (edited) 6y
robinb @kamoorephoto I can see your point, and perhaps it was the added mire of the freaky town‘s inhabitants that drove the nail in the coffin for me. While the ending might have left hope for one of the girls, the other was irrevocably lost, and I saw little hope for the town as well. Maybe I‘m just too used to happier endings. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I‘m glad you got more from it. 😊 6y
See All 10 Comments
kamoorephoto I agree, I hated the way they treated her; I can handle sad endings though... it was a rough one! There was no hope at the end of it! I think the author was driving home the point that they still misunderstood the disorder and using her that way was assuaging their guilt over that. I can understand being pissed at it (I was pretty angry reading, believe me; I suffer from depression and anxiety). I have always wished for a friend like Kyra had 💓 6y
robinb @Cinfhen the weird thing is, it was not one I picked. It came along as a “freebie” with another ARC that I had received. I seldom pan a book because I know not everyone has the same tastes/experiences with books, and I feel that I might have influenced against reading one that would have profound meaning to someone else. This one was just not meant for me. 🤷🏻‍♀️ To each his/her own. 👍😊 6y
[DELETED] 3803335244 Abuse of Children/teenagers is always a hard thing for me to read, so I completely understand. Hopefully your next read is awesome 🤓 6y
robinb @kamoorephoto yes, the friendship aspect was well done, and I was happy to have the bright spot of their friendship amidst all the bleakness. I‘m so sorry for your suffering, and I‘m glad that this book spoke to you. In the end, that‘s what makes a book worth reading, its ability to reach you. 6y
robinb @ForeverNerdy 👍😊 6y

Third book this week, I think! This was an absolutely heart-wrenching read. It‘s a story about a college-age girl called Corey going back to the tiny town of Lost Creek, Alaska, where she grew up, upon hearing that her very best friend, Kyra has suddenly died. But Corey knows something isn‘t right and Kyra shouldn‘t have ‘gone‘ so soon. Huge topics in this one: bipolar disorder, grief, bisexuality🙀Read my review! http://bit.ly/BeforeILetGoReview
