Brazen: Rebel Ladies Who Rocked the World | Pnlope Bagieu
80 posts | 59 read | 136 to read
Throughout history and across the globe, one characteristic connects the daring women of Brazen: their indomitable spirit. With her characteristic wit and dazzling drawings, celebrated graphic novelist Pnlope Bagieu profiles the lives of these feisty female role models, some world famous, some little known. From Nellie Bly to Mae Jemison or Josephine Baker to Naziq al-Abid, the stories in this comic biography are sure to inspire the next generation of rebel ladies.

#Movember Day 8: The brazen women featured in this graphic memoir all led their lives with a #ExpressYourself mentality. From Ndongo and Matamba to the Dominican Republic, Bagieu represented diverse women fearlessly in a way that has not been done before. My review: https://wp.me/pDlzr-jHI

3.5⭐️

A fun collection of stories focused on strong women in world history. I did really enjoy the wide variety of class levels, time periods and cultures/ethnicities being portrayed in the book. These are great resources for young women to gain access to because of the opportunities of inspiration and finding a new role model.

This was DELIGHTFUL. I read a library copy, but intend to acquire my own. I want my daughter to have it to read when she‘s old enough to understand cultural & historical context, as well moral ambiguity. The women in this collection were truly brazen. Courageous and determined across the board, but not always kind or honest. (Murder was involved at times, as in this illustration.) I loved reading about them.

I lost this book for a while (and racked up a chunk of change in fines) but I was committed to finishing it. And not just because I'm a completionist (because I AM) but because this book was incredible. The artwork was stunning. The little bits of humor were thrilling. And I got to learn about a FANTASTIC GROUP OF WOMEN. Recommended this to my coworker & I heard the barcode scanner go off 15 seconds after I gave it to him.

I went to the grand Central Library yesterday to pick up my Luxembourg book for #BackpackEurope. If you are ever in downtown St. Louis, I recommend a visit. It is truly gorgeous and the recent extensive renovations have only enhanced it.

Coincidentally, it was also their Comic Central, which was fun to walk around. It caught my eye that a vendor had the tagged book, which @AmandaL had just mentioned that morning! I stood reading and was sold!

This was a great little graphic book with short biographies of cool ladies. Some if it is a little scandalous, all of it is really interesting. Many of the women I had never heard of before, so it was a neat surprise to see that one of the profiles was of a lady who was from the town next to where I grew up, and that she saved the most iconic building on our island. 👍👍

Happy Friday and ❤️ for #graphicnovelsnews.Today #graphicnovel is a tribute for women who made our history. They are smart, strong, brave and beautiful and their stories shook and shaped our world. There are 29 brief biographies from year of 350 BC to nowadays, some are well-known but most of them have vanished into obscurity, few of them were not born women. The book is so inspirational as beautiful as funny.

I‘m a huge fan of graphic novel biographies, so 29 different women was a treat. Pénélope Bagieu highlights women from across the world and ages, women of color, and white women. All women who were rebels in their own way (except The Shaggs- I‘m perplexed by that one).

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
This is a gem of a graphic novel. I was lucky enough to see the author speak about it, and not only autograph it, but do a drawing of one of the women in my copy! I took my time with this one, not allowing myself to read more than one at a time to allow each woman‘s story to marinate. Most of the women I knew little about or not at all, and each followed her truth despite structures or expectations imposed on her. Highly recommend!

EvieBee Yay! I‘m waiting on a library copy! I loved her biographic novel of Mama Cass Elliot. Her illustrations were awesome! (California Dreamin‘) (edited) 2y
JamieArc @EvieBee At the end of each woman that she writes about there is a gorgeous two page spread. They are beautiful. Looking forward to getting my hands on California Dreamin‘! 2y

This #graphicnovel is a collection of short bios of historical women, and I'm really impressed with the variety and diversity of "rebel ladies" Bagieu chose. There are a lot of similar projects these days on inspirational women from history, but this one has impressed me more than most. I learned about so many new-to-me role models, and selfishly hope there will be more volumes. I'd recommend for an older teen/adult audience.
