It's All Relative
It's All Relative: Adventures Up and Down the Worlds Family Tree | A. J. Jacobs
33 posts | 25 read | 35 to read
New York Times bestselling author of The Know-It-All and The Year of Living Biblically, A.J. Jacobs undergoes a hilarious, heartfelt quest to understand what constitutes familywhere it begins and how far it goesand attempts to untangle the true meaning of the Family of Humankind. A.J. Jacobs has received some strange emails over the years, but this note was perhaps the strangest: You dont know me, but Im your eighth cousin. And we have over 80,000 relatives of yours in our database. Thats enough family members to fill Madison Square Garden four times over. Who are these people, A.J. wondered, and how do I find them? So began Jacobss three-year adventure to help build the biggest family tree in history. Jacobss journey would take him to all seven continents. He drank beer with a US president, found himself singing with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, and unearthed genetic links to Hollywood actresses and real-life scoundrels. After all, we can choose our friends, but not our family. Whether hes posing as a celebrity, outsourcing his chores, or adhering strictly to the Bible, we love reading about the wacky lifestyle experiments of author A.J. Jacobs (Entertainment Weekly). Now Jacobs upends, in ways both meaningful and hilarious, our understanding of genetics and genealogy, tradition and tribalism, identity and connection. Its All Relative is a fascinating look at the bonds that connect us all.

#TIL a lot about genealogy, but also that Jacobs once drove off the road when he got too engrossed in an audiobook and I can relate. #NFNov

Highly entertaining, whether you‘re interested in genealogy or not. And I‘ve been reading Census reports and court records more than books as I try to figure out a tough genealogy problem. Sorry to be MIA - any Griffin genealogists on Litsy? #genealogy

"It's All Relative: Adventures Up and Down the World's Family Tree" = something that made me chuckle. Particularly the chapter about identifying the black sheep in our families.

Amiable @Riveted_Reader_Melissa It's not my favorite of Jacobs' books, but it was still a decent and quick read. I'm an amateur genealogist so I was especially interested in the list of resources and organizations. 10mo

I already read tagged book.

Hollie Stories told at a family reunion led this author to research and write her family‘s journey through the Holocaust. It‘s fascinating and well- written. As well as the modern day reunion- the family was spread all over the world escaping Nazi persecution and so the hope of reunion is throughout. 1y

Finding long-lost relatives might make you stop and think #callmemaybe 📞 ☎️📱Do I really want to talk to these people??

I haven‘t gotten very far in this book but it‘s a really interesting take on genetics and how we are all related in some way. Also-I‘m a big fan of AJ Jacobs! I‘ve met him in person and he‘s great! #heatinjuly #photochallenge

This was really fun, a look into the very serious world of genealogy, and a more lighthearted exploration into how and why and where people get interested in their family stories.

Hmm. My first Jacobs and he‘s charming (and reads really nicely on audio). So that‘s ok. But there‘s not much here. We are all related, cousins all, and maybe readers will treat strangers nicer for a few days, or they might be just be a annoyed they put time into such a thin book. On the bright side, Jacobs can actually talk about nothing for a long time and make it entertaining.

SqueakyChu Hahahaha! I‘ve read some A.J. Jacobs before. I think he‘s fun for a light read. 2y
Graywacke I liked him. I‘d be happy to do more audio by him if my library had any. 2y
Graywacke @SqueakyChu see above... 2y
brookesiem I haven‘t heard his audio, but I feel the same. I just want him to talk at me and be amusing. 1y

I came to this book after listening to A.J.‘s podcast ‘Twice Removed‘. I found the book to be very humorous and I loved all his personal stories and anecdotes. There‘s some interesting ideas and it‘s made me curious to explore some of the world family trees that are on the web.

Jacobs never disappoints! His books are always well-researched, compelling, personal and funny. It‘s a tough balance but he pulls it off every time. If you‘re interested in genealogy, DNA tests and family structures, you‘ll love this one.

I love A.J. Jacobs, but I didn‘t love this book. Definitely not his best. It probably didn‘t help that I‘m not all that into genealogy. The stories about his family and some of the interviews were interesting, but it was lacking a lot of his signature humor, and I was slightly annoyed by the whole “we‘re all family and should love each other” theme. Disappointing, overall. 😕

This covers a few of my favorite bases. I love A.J. Jacobs and genealogy is a passion of mine. He doesn‘t disappoint, and gets into the new effects of DNA testing in family research.

I love AJ Jacobs but this wasn‘t quite as strong as his other experimental ventures. I thought the idea of a global family reunion was pretty ridiculous, but the genealogy bits were interesting, and as always, his writing was very witty and fun. I know next to nothing about my family history so this might just inspire me to do some research.

ElishaLovesBooks I have this from the library! Thanks for the review! 2y

Did you know we share 88% of our DNA with mice? 99.9% DNA with all other humans? Most of us have a small percentage of Neanderthal DNA? Entertaining book about genealogy and author‘s planning of a World Tree Global Family Reunion for a few thousand of his relatives.
