All-Girl Filling Station's Last Reunion | Fannie Flagg

"NEW YORK TIMES "BESTSELLER Look for special features inside. Join the Random House Reader s Circle for author chats and more. The one and only Fannie Flagg, beloved author of "Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe, Can t Wait to Get to Heaven, "and" I Still Dream About You, " is at her hilarious and superb best in this new comic mystery novel about two women who are forced to reimagine who they are. Mrs. Sookie Poole of Point Clear, Alabama, has just married off the last of her daughters and is looking forward to relaxing and perhaps traveling with her husband, Earle. The only thing left to contend with is her mother, the formidable Lenore Simmons Krackenberry. Lenore may be a lot of fun for other people, but is, for the most part, an overbearing presence for her daughter. Then one day, quite by accident, Sookie discovers a secret about her mother s past that knocks her for a loop and suddenly calls into question everything she ever thought she knew about herself, her family, and her future. Sookie begins a search for answers that takes her to California, the Midwest, and back in time, to the 1940s, when an irrepressible woman named Fritzi takes on the job of running her family s filling station. Soon truck drivers are changing their routes to fill up at the All-Girl Filling Station. Then, Fritzi sees an opportunity for an even more groundbreaking adventure. As Sookie learns about the adventures of the girls at the All-Girl Filling Station, she finds herself with new inspiration for her own life. Fabulous, fun-filled, spanning decades and generations, and centered on a little-known aspect of America s twentieth-century story, "The All-Girl Filling Station s Last Reunion" is another irresistible novel by the remarkable Fannie Flagg. Praise for "The All-Girl Filling Station s Last Reunion" "" A beautifully told tale, world-class humor, and characters who live forever in a grateful reader s world. Fannie Flagg keeps getting better and better. "The All-Girl Filling Station s Last Reunion "proves it. Pat Conroy If all the self-help books that promote ways to find yourself were stacked in an enormous pile . . .none would approach the sweet wisdom with which Flagg infuses"The All-Girl Filling Station s Last Reunion." "Richmond Times-Dispatch" It s Flagg s pleasure to hit her characters with several happy endings, but the real happiness is that she s given us another lovable and quirky novel. " The Washington Post" Flagg is at her South-skewering best. . . . A chuckle-while-reading book. "The Mobile Press-Register" The kind of story that keeps readers turning pages in a fever . . . There are plot twists, adventure, heartbreak, and familial love in spades. "Publishers Weekly" Fannie flies high, and her fans will enjoy the ride. . . .A charming story written with wit and empathy . . .just the right blend of history and fiction. "Kirkus Reviews" Fannie Flagg is a fantastic storyteller. She surprises the reader in every chapter with unexpected twists and turns. The only problem I had with this fascinating story is that it ended too soon. I can t wait for her next book. Carol Burnett "The All-Girl Filling Station s Last Reunion" is an absolute joy to read, full of Fannie Flagg's trademark humor, warmth, tenderness, and heart. Kristin Hannah"

Read these together for understanding & admiration of the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASPs) during WW II, shuttling planes as volunteers, paying for their own pilot's licenses, training, uniforms, and even their own funerals. 1000 served, 38 died. They did not receive veterans' status or benefits until 30 years later. #VehicleCvr #NewYearNewBooks @Eggs @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks

I really loved this audiobook. Fannie Flagg narrates this herself and does a great job. I‘m surprised I actually enjoyed the story of Sookie more than I did the parts set back in WWII, but it was all good. Sookie‘s mom was a piece of work! I learned about the women who flew planes in WWII — something that never seems to be talked about. If you enjoy southern fiction you will probably enjoy this. FF is quickly becoming one of my favorites! 4.5⭐️

This was an easy read. I was really anoyed with Sookie at first. I felt like her character could have been written a bit better in the first part of the book. It did get better after awhile though. I think if this book was structured a bit differently the tentions between characters and plotlines could have worked a bit better. I still liked this and felt like this was a perfect read for this summer. 😊☀️

This is told in 2 timelines & I loved the story set in the past. The part in the present was decent- I esp like that the MC is a mature woman evaluating her life- but it wasn't as compelling. This is the 2nd book I've read this year about the Women Air Service Pilots in WW2 &I'll look for more on that topic. This book is full of heart &humor yet deals with some serious topics. It took me a bit to warm up to Sookie yet I understood her all too well.

I totally forgot to time my reading these past few days, but I‘ve finished a few more books during #NovelNovember. The tagged book was by far the best one, and it kind of made me want to read everything by this author. Enjoyed it even more than Fried Green Tomatoes ♥️ @Andrew65

With yesterday being #worldmentalhealthawarenessday there was no better novel in my mind than to enter back into my blog than #theallgirlfillingstationslastreunion I firmly believe children deserve the truth of their biological history so that they are better prepared should they ever have the same issues in the future.

Fannie always sits us down with the most lovable & quirkiest characters who tug at our hearts & make us laugh out loud. Only this time she wraps it all around a beautiful tribute to the amazing Women Air Force Service Pilots(WASP),the first women to fly military planes during World War II. For me, this was Fannie‘s best novel to date. Cheers to all the resilient WASPS who inspired this story. (Photo:WASPMuseum.org)

This was just the kind of fun fluff that I was expecting. Middle aged woman finally finds herself, and meanwhile there are historical flashbacks to pioneer feminists who paved the way for contemporary women. Lots of laughs and warm fuzzies. Nothing profound, but fun.

morgan_lionheart I wish there was a rating between "pick" and "so-so" because I enjoyed it a lot, but want to reserve "pick" for the truly amazing books. 6y

During the course of reading, I felt like a few sections were long, and maybe unnecessary. Ye of little faith...at the end, all was illuminated. I only caught one of the foreshadows. Well-played Fannie, well-played!

I generally expect to re-donate books I've picked up at library sales; but I do believe this one will stay in my collection!

After reading about so many dysfunctional families, it was refreshing to read about a loving,Polish family, living In Wisconsin during World War II. The sisters are forced to take over the family business and later become WASPS, women military pilots. The story also follows a modern family, and the two stories eventually connect. There are unexpected twists and turns with some laugh out loud moments as well. An easy read that warmed my heart.

With her last daughter married, Sookie is finally ready to relax and enjoy her quiet life. But first she has to deal with aggressive bluebirds and her demanding mother.

The discovery of a long-held secret, connects her with the Jurdabralinski sisters of Pulaski, Wisconsin, who served as WASPs (Women‘s Airforce Service Pilots) during WWII.

I loved this hilarious and heartwarming novel and the vivid characters felt like old friends.

Given the very real horrors that we‘re facing today, this kind of book might seem trite, but this was a pick-me-up for me. It takes place in a safe world that is looking back on WWII. Flagg reminds us that during that war, most people were terrified of the possibilities they faced, just like we are today, but they got through it.

I loved every bit of this book. Trying to figure out why it jumped to the past was a bit confusing at first but both stories where entresting so it didn't bother me or take long to figure out why. This was a great story about womens rights in the 50s, a head strong wasp, and what its like to be in the small town south in fairly modern times. I may not have lived in Alabam since childhood but this book stuck a cord we me.

Listened to this on audio and liked the narrator's delivery which really brought the book to life. One of the main characters was a member of the WASPs, the Women Airforce Service Pilots and I enjoyed learning more about this piece of American history with which I was unfamiliar.

I loved it! This one will initiate conversation with different generations of women and even women veterans. As we approach Memorial Day, here's a lesson on paying honor to those that have sacrificed for our freedom.
So Sookie might seem like an airhead but you'll understand when introduced to her mother. Lots of family drama but on the nicer side. Like Fritzi flying off on a date to Milwaukee in 1938 to David coming out. It's a goodsummer read.

I rate books based on how well the book accomplishes the goal it set out to accomplish, not based on some grand "objective" scale. The book definitely accomplishes its goal, but this style of novel isn't to my particular liking. I realize I'm not the target audience, so I'll probably try Fannie's books again in like 30 years.
