Kristin Labransdatter

I‘ve read this trilogy every twenty years. I give my copies away and then randomly over the years find them at secondhand bookstores and purchase them again. I can‘t wait to start reading this again with the #KLBR group beginning in June.

Just an FYI: Willa Cather and Sigrid Undset were friends. My mother was Cather‘s niece and she talked about Undset‘s writing and this trilogy in particular.

AnneCecilie I‘m more skeptical to the language, as a Norwegian I will off course one day read these in Norwegian and then the question is if they have modernized the language or not. Back in the 1920s the written language was quite different from today, more influenced by Danish. 20h

Amiable @BarbaraJean There was a long stretch in the middle that I had to push myself through. And some of the main character‘s choices irritated me. But I would definitely recommend it as a worthwhile read. (edited) 2mo

The Stowe Public Library in VT has a huge annual sale this time of year. I kept to only one small table because Lord knows I don‘t need more books. I‘m fairly certain I have the Undset trilogy packed in all those boxes of books I haven‘t unpacked yet but these were nice and clean so I grabbed them. I was so happy to find a Pym! I‘ve wanted to read her forever.

🪴 Read and loved the tagged trilogy in spring a few years ago.
🪴 Can‘t wait to see the tulip bulbs I planted bloom. We also have a large vegetable garden. Seedlings indoors at the moment.
🪴 I always look forward to my first gin and tonic of the season. Best enjoyed on the front porch or back garden while reading. Not quite there yet though. This has been one cold spring!

I realized I was consistently reaching past the big books and grabbing the shorter ones just to hit a self-imposed “book total” every year. So I decided to purposely challenge myself to read at least one super chunkster every year. Good for you! 3y

Amiable @TheAromaofBooks Exactly!! Last year I actually set my GR reading goal at 1. One book. Which I finished on Jan. 2. After that it was all gravy. 😀 There are so many really good big books that I‘d been avoiding because I could read 4 others that were short but helped me inflate my book count. I finally realized how ridiculous that was. That‘s why I now purposely seek out 1,000+ page books for this challenge! (edited) 3y

tokorowilliamwallace Interesting methodology, but I highly doubt I can read 100 pages of something a week; supremely easy for most serial readers. I have way too many chunksters I have both already started and which I've recently bought. A fellow reader with whom we have some mutual respect for each other just completed Murakami's chunkster, and I have to look into it to figure out if I think I would like it and the literary themes and subject matter it incorporates. 3y

Amiable @tokorowilliamwallace I can‘t speak for everyone, but I‘m not a serial monogamous reader. I always have at least 4-5 books going at a time, usually at least half of them nonfiction. For this challenge, though, I pick one specific book and pledge to read 100 pgs/week until it‘s done. While simultaneously reading my other books. That works for me. It doesn‘t work for everyone, which is fine. The goal is just to finish a chunkster of your choice. 🙂 3y

If you haven‘t read any books of these size yet, I‘d recommend that you start first with “Pillars of the Earth” —it‘s chunky, but it‘s very readable and you will likely fly through it! (edited) 3y

I loved Kristin. I fell in love with all the characters. This heroine was real. The desire, the pride that resulted in true remorse. I became lost in the story at times and forgot where I was. I enjoyed the struggle of the old beliefs with the new Christianity. I needed this book. I also thought of Gone with the Wind. Scarlett and Kristin were both dedicated mothers and there was unrequited love from Kristin's brother-in-law. #FoodandLit

Welcome to Lillehammer! Home of Nobel Prize in Literature winner Sigrid Undset and the 1994 Winter Olympics. Bottom right is the Lillehammer bridge, which plays a prominent role with a moose in one episode of Netflix‘s Lilyhammer. We most enjoyed the open air museum in Lillehammer, the Maihaugen. We didn‘t go to Olympic Park but it‘s open to tourists. #foodandlit #Norway

Here‘s an eclectic mix of books about #Norway and by Norwegians for #foodandlit in May. The tagged book is a #chunkster that I read back in the 1990s. I‘m very fond of it and hope to reread it someday. (We will visit the author‘s hometown during our tour of Norway in May.) Giants in the Earth is about Norwegian immigrants to America and it is very very grim. The Monsters book is gruesome. I‘ll post more books as the month progresses.

When I read it in the 90s, I‘d been to Norway once or twice & just to the Bergen area. Now I‘ve driven across Norway‘s width & a fair part north to south by the North Sea, & now I‘m a lawyer too, so I‘m sure I‘d get much more out of a reread. Sorry friends I have been missing in action on Litsy this past month. I hope you are all well, reading wonderful books and coming out of lockdowns!
I have been reading my #chunkster by Sigurd Undset which I love ❤️ I have also been busy gardening and extending my veggie patch. We have had lots of rain this summer and my garden has loved it..we have been eating home grown vegetables every day 🌽 🥦🪴Mother Nature is amazing😊

Mammaletterario Omg so I literally had this book in my hands to purchase today when I went to Barnes & Noble. I wasn‘t able to get it because I had some other books I actually needed to get for school but I will be back to grab it! It sounds so good! 4y

You can buy it directly from Linladen which I assume is based in Sweden. They are beautiful..printed on linen with linen thread. The designs come from 1870..I will post progress pics and tag you! 4y

I‘ve had the honor of visiting Sigrid Undset‘s hometown of Lillehammer after I read the trilogy and took a photo of her statue that‘s on the main shopping thoroughfare through town.

I recommend the book if you have some spare months on your hands.

AlaMich I read this several years ago and found it enchanting, not least because how many other books has anyone read set in 14th century Norway? Uh, none, I‘m guessing. 5y

marleed I read this trilogy in college many years ago. I loved this story. In fact I received my only honors in a course (A*) for a paper I wrote about it. My roommate was in the class and named her first daughter Kristen because of her love for the story. 5y

This is an epic telling of Kristin‘s life starting at age seven. She lives a typical life, for the 1300s. But in other ways she‘s rebellious and unlike most Norwegian women of her time. The themes are quite modern, including women‘s sexuality and the significant downsides of her turbulent marriage. ⬇️

BarbaraTheBibliophage On the flip side, Kristin is incredibly pious, as Undset was for part of her life. So the discussion of Catholic themes—including copious amounts of guilt—is also strong. Kristin is a conflicted woman, and I couldn‘t help but be drawn into her dilemmas. 6y

Way too boring.

Way, way, way too boring.

I see this has a rating over 4 ⭐️. And I tried to hang in to see where it turns good. But I can‘t do it. It‘s a shame - my copy is beautiful, & has all three books in the trilogy. Still, I‘ve got to move on from this one.

Now I have to find two more picks for books published in 1920 & 1921 for the #192019challenge 😕 Any suggestions?

Sweettartlaura @Kalalalatja She‘s a Nobel Prize winner 🤷🏻‍♀️. Some people like the medieval epic; maybe because this focused on a young woman instead of a young man this was more exciting 100 years ago; maybe because most people never saw a pic of Norway 100 years ago but she explains it beautifully? I dunno. But I can‘t give it any more time. There‘s nothing here for me and no hint that there will be 😕 6y

⭐⭐⭐⭐ I really enjoyed this slow, detailed read although sometimes it was a slog. I loved all the details about caring for her young children. A main theme in book is how Kristin wanted to follow God's path but also her own, and I was thinking last night how that is true of every person of faith... It's just quite sad that she didn't know more joy in life, but even the fact that her joy was mixed with sadness is just a fact of life.
