Pickpick

This is a low pick for me. While I liked the characters, the plot didn't work for me. I get that it is fiction; however, as I have often stated, I want it to be at least a little bit believable. This story started out on a limb then just went on to be ridiculous. 3⭐️
Lots of triggers in this book. You've been warned. #Serieslove2025 #ShelfSweeper @Tove_Reads @Andrew65 #Read2025 @DieAReader #ChunksterChallenge2025 @Amiable

I‘m not sure if I love or hate the ending? Set in the mid 19th cent., this is the story of Maggie Tulliver who, were she a man, would have had the education and success she deserved. She‘s smarter than her father, who favors her, and her brother, who loves her but holds her back. Phillip is her intellectual equal. Stephan I think she‘d eventually tire of…

Amiable Excellent work! 🥳 1w
Ruthiella @Amiable Thank you! 😊 1w
mcctrish It should have been a story about a girl‘s triumph 1w

Ruthiella @mcctrish It so easily could have been that. There was space for it. 1w
eeclayton I also think Stephen would tire of her eventually, too. Once he got over the honeymoon phase, he'd may even start to blame her for lost opportunities and their situation in life. 7d
Ruthiella @eeclayton I wonder if that‘s the reason the ending is what it is…because none of the other options were good. 7d

For June, I decided to try making one post for the monthly challenges I host. I‘m excited to see what everyone will be reading!

#MonthlyNonfiction2025 - your choice, or if you‘re progressing through the Dewey numbers, 500-599

#FictionalTraveler - A Place You‘d Like to Visit

#ThematicCozies - Celebration

#ReadOrDonate - Your Choice

#AllergicToChunksters - Continue with whatever you‘re currently plowing through, or start something new 🙂

willaful I didn't do a chunkster for May but I plan on Table for Two for June. For nonfiction I'm thinking My Life as a Villainess by Laura Lippman. 1w

TheAromaofBooks Yay!! So apparently I don't have very many 500s??? I can't find one anyway 😂 However, I think I own more 600s than any other number - way into applied sciences around here AKA gardening!! So I am going to grab one of those, and if I find a 500 later I'll fit it in. For Fictional Traveler I'm heading to England with Wodehouse, and my ReadorDonate pick is by Nora Roberts - Carolina Moon. I'm excited!!! 7d
Crinoline_Laphroaig #ThematicCozies I'm do another Roof Top Garden mystery by Thea Cambert. 7d
willaful Just remembered I have a nonfiction book on my Kindle already, so I'm set. 4d

Book 4 in the series and definitely better than book three. The characters were much better in this one and I felt the plot and development improved over the previous book. Not my favorite of the series but close. 3.5ish ⭐️

Pickpick

I normally zip through Douglas's books. In this one, I reached a point where I guessed what was going to happen and I couldn't finish. Therefore, I put the book down and picked it up again a couple of days ago. No surprises. Just as expected. The plot was good just predictable. 3.5🌟 #Read2025 @DieAReader At just over 500 pages this is one for #ChunksterChallenge2025 @Amiable #AllergicToChunksters @julieclair

Exciting, engrossing historical fiction about three women who worked at Bletchley park during WWII and the impact that time -- of personal freedom on one hand and intense secrecy on the other -- impacted their lives. It is on the melodramatic side but interestingly, some of the most astonishing elements were drawn from true stories. (I was a little uncomfortable that Prince Phillip is a major character.)

One of the characters is almost (cont)

willaful certainly autistic, and though of the “savant“ variety few of us are, I was really interested in her growth and her way of finding happiness for herself that had nothing to do with what society expected of her.

#OffMyShelf “Award Winning”
#ChunksterChallenge2025
#AllergictoChunksters

Longlisted for the 2020 International Booker, it also won two German awards per the back flap.

It took me two months to read this 1275 page monster. It‘s a multigenerational saga about a Georgian family from 1900 to 2007. Very melodramatic - I didn‘t particularly like it but appreciated the mental workout of reading in German. I read it w/ a friend & complained to her. 😂

Graywacke I read it in English and i can relate. She depends on well known historical happenings for shock value. But they don‘t have a lock of shock if we all already know about it. That weakens it a bit. 1mo
Ruthiella @Graywacke It would have been a stronger book for my taste if it had been edited down. That said, it sold well and many readers loved its emotion and expansiveness. (edited) 1mo

BarbaraBB I had a hard fine finishing it in English so kudos for you to read it in German! I didn‘t knew you speak/read German! 1mo
Ruthiella @BarbaraBB Yes, I don‘t think it was the translation that made it a chore at times to read. 1mo
