Noir: A Novel | Christopher Moore
112 posts | 77 read | 6 reading | 90 to read
The absurdly outrageous, sarcastically satiric, and always entertaining New York Times bestselling author Christopher Moore returns in finest madcap form with this zany noir set on the mean streets of post-World War II San Francisco, and featuring a diverse cast of characters, including a hapless bartender; his Chinese sidekick; a doll with sharp angles and dangerous curves; a tight-lipped Air Force general; a wisecracking waif; Petey, a black mamba; and many more. San Francisco. Summer, 1947. A dame walks into a saloon . . . Its not every afternoon that an enigmatic, comely blonde named Stilton (like the cheese) walks into the scruffy gin joint where Sammy "Two Toes" Tiffin tends bar. Its love at first sight, but before Sammy can make his move, an Air Force general named Remy arrives with some urgent business. Cause when you need something done, Sammy is the guy to go to; hes got the connections on the street. Meanwhile, a suspicious flying object has been spotted up the Pacific coast in Washington State near Mount Rainer, followed by a mysterious plane crash in a distant patch of desert in New Mexico that goes by the name Roswell. But the real weirdness is happening on the streets of the City by the Bay. When one of Sammys schemes goes south and the Cheese mysteriously vanishes, Sammy is forced to contend with his own dark secretsand more than a few strange goings onif he wants to find his girl. Think Raymond Chandler meets Damon Runyon with more than a dash of Bugs Bunny and the Looney Tunes All Stars. Its all very, very Noir. Its all very, very Christopher Moore.

I was listening to the audio and I did miss portions of the book, though I managed to take in the major events of the book. I liked the POV of the snake the couple of times we got that. The audio was very good with the accents. The phrases and vocabulary was pretty fun, too. Moore‘s trademark is humour, so of course, there was a bit of that, too. Cont in comments...

LibraryCin Moore also had a brief afterward where he talked about where he got the idea for the book, how that went a bit sideways, and the real places that made it into the book. I still think he writes really good historical fiction and this fit the bill for that, too 8mo

I listened to the audiobook of this and the narrator's voice was perfection. The story itself was interesting and the humor was top notch. I laughed a lot on my way to and from work. This is my first Christopher Moore book and it won't be my last.

Finished Noir. The reader did a good job w the voices… but at times it felt a little *too* schticky. But I laughed out loud a bunch & overall enjoyed the story. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Started The Magic Misfits, also read by Harris, & of course it‘s lovely ☺️

& sharing our Beartivity Scene 😁 I call my husb “Bear,” & our cat was Kitty Bear, so MiL couldn‘t resist when she saw this & got it for us years ago. One of my fave Christmas decos 😁

Ok, still reading the Shimmer. Seems like it should be a quicker read than it is? I‘m almost half done now. Interesting but… a little slow?

Listening to Noir - very in-character reading, which normally I love. But… idk, this one is just ok so far? About 25% done…

Received #jolabokaflodawap pkg from @Julsmarshall yesterday! ??????

And was able to get my 2nd Jólabókaflód pkg re-bought, re-wrapped, re-pkg‘d, & sent out as of this morning! ?

Avanders #AVeryMerryReadathon I remembered this time but ran out of space to include it in the body 😁 @TheSpineView (also, are progress-posts a part of this? Or just when I finish something?) 🎄🌺🎄 3y

Moore always writes these completely insane novels where literally anything can happen - this was no exception, though I didn't find it quite as funny as I have found his previous books. I suspect it's because he was focused on keeping up the "noir" style but I definitely prefer his typical humour over this style.

Book 5/6 for #AwesomeApril

More irreverent humor from Moore. Not as raunchy as his books involving Pocket, but not clean LOL. Historical setting + Roswell + schemes involving snakes leads to a typical crazy / hilarious plot.

Although it‘s called Noir, I think sci-fi/comedy/noir would encompass the the breadth of this tale. Taking place in 1947 San Francisco, we follow a bartender that gets mixed up in a dangerous situation after a girl walks into his bar. Add in a mamba & some aliens & you can only begin to imagine where this story will take you.

Thank you for the tag @Hufflepuffle

The most beautiful thing I saw recently was last Saturday so I'm not sure it counts but there was a fox running around the neighborhood. So pretty. 🦊

In order to smile I like just about anything classical. And film scores. So soothing.

I definitely ate ice cream yesterday. Anything with caramel does the trick.

This was very old timey feeling noir. But with an alien. It was just ok for me. But it‘s a me problem, not a writer problem. I keep thinking I‘ll like Christopher Moore, but I never really do.

This book had great atmosphere. It was like a snarky Dick Tracy with a little sci fi thrown in. I laughed out loud a lot and I could really picture the setting and the characters like an old 1940s movie. There were a few scenes that made me cringe because they were a little too over-the-top.

InBooksILive I laughed out loud so many times when I read this! It was hilarious. It was my first Christopher Moore book and I just had to read more after reading Noir! 5y

I loved Moore's A Dirty Job and Secondhand Souls but Noir moved a little slow. It seemed to take a long time to get to the sci-fi, supernatural aspect that I was hoping to read.

1.) The tagged book had me cracking up so hard. First book I read from Moore and I was an instant fan.
2.) Bazzi-Beautiful
3.) Sitting on my front porch with a good book on a nice day/evening.
4.) All my kids, of course, but I'll say my youngest, since he's the only one awake right now. He is such a character. Always has me smiling
5.) When my kids hug me out of nowhere or write me little notes.

I was abut disappointed in this one. I loved the Noir aspect of the book, but it lacked the witty repartee I have come to expect from Moore. Not until the end did I see the usual funny, witty , over the top weirdness I was looking for. Overall it was good, but it didn‘t give me the usually belly laughs.

*sigh* Moore used to be an auto-buy author for me, but I think that time has passed. Some of the humor ("humor") just isn't my taste anymore, and this was so chaotic that it got boring honestly. And I feel like 1940s, venomous snake, Roswell-ish stuff could have been so great. The last 35% or so of this was just kind of a chore to finish. ???

#formerfaveauthor #disappointing #readhisolderstuff

AlaMich I‘m sorry to hear that! I really like him too, and was looking forward to this. 😕 6y

AlaMich @SarahSaysRead I‘ve read Island of the Sequined Nun, BF and a couple others, but what I‘ve really loved were the audio versions of Fool and Serpent of Venice.
