Another catch up post and another reread. I enjoyed this much more than I did the first time, in 2023. I've been reading LM Montgomery's journals with #kindredspiritsbuddyread. They give so much more context. Susan seems to echo LMM's concern over WWI. Also, the Anne books have been better in publication order, rather than chronologically. I still have the same gripes as last time (too little about Avonlea favorites), but oh well.

Rilla of Ingleside (Special Collector's) | Lucy Maud Montgomery

It‘s been a whirlwind week/weekend, but I made time today to finish my #reread of this wonderful book on audio. I had forgotten just how solemn and sad the entire story is. It is truly a novel of WWI on the Canadian home front with all of the stress and grief that includes. Yet, it also has those signature moments of pure beauty and humor that LMM writes so wonderfully. I loved revisiting this story.

Is there anything else you‘d like to discuss from Rilla of Ingleside?
Was there anything that bothered or frustrated you about the book?
Do you have any favorite passages or scenes you‘d like to share?

lauraisntwilder This is Rilla's book, I know that, but it still makes me sad how little of Anne and Avonlea we get. At one point, Anne mentions not being able to do anything and almost said, "Go write something!" out loud. There's one, very brief, mention of Diana, and Marilla has died between books with no fanfare. Is Rachel Lynde also dead? And did Davy Keith end up in the war? What happened to all our friends?? 3w

BarbaraJean @lauraisntwilder I felt that, too. The little comment about Marilla made me SO sad! As you said, it's Rilla's book--and I think it also reflects how relationships changed for LMM as she grew up, got married, and moved away. But no mention of Davy is so puzzling. There is a brief mention of other boys going off to war--children of Anne's childhood and college friends. But no Davy. It's odd. I know LMM was tired of Anne by this point, but still! 3w

BarbaraJean One scene I'd forgotten that REALLY bothered me this time was little Bruce Meredith and the “sacrifice“ he makes about Stripey. I was HORRIFIED. LMM often uses children's mistaken ideas as a way to critique established religion, but I couldn't fathom what narrative purpose there could have been with that scene. I loved Bruce's earlier spot-on take about making the Kaiser into a good man, but the Stripey scene just canceled it all out for me. 3w

kwmg40 I loved the whole Dog Monday storyline. Yes, it was predictable and a real tear-jerker but I totally fell for it.
I also enjoyed the passages about the 1917 election and the conscription issue, partly because we in Canada were going through our own latest federal election while I reading these pages. 2w

On this umpteenth re-read for me, what struck me as new (more than just the “new” passages that I discovered had been excised from my old faithful Bantam paperback!!), was seeing so much of LMM‘s WWI experience on the page.

If you‘ve been reading LMM‘s journals, what did you notice in Rilla of Ingleside that echoed LMM‘s thoughts and experiences during WWI?

lauraisntwilder The journals added so much! I've only read this one other time, in 2023, but I enjoyed it more this time. LMM's terror over the war news makes so much sense in a household with so many young men of "fighting age." It must have been therapeutic for her, to give meaning to those awful years. 3w

lauraisntwilder Specifically, I saw Susan as a sort of stand-in for LMM. She puts her faith in Kitchener and studies maps and waits for news. LMM doesn't quite let us see Susan's moments of weakness though, which is one of the main reasons her journals were so important to her. Her own moments were written out, so she made Susan cook and knit. 3w

BarbaraJean @lauraisntwilder I saw SO many echoes of LMM's WWI entries! There were references to people, places, and battles that I remembered reading & finding tedious in LMM's journals. 😂 I hadn't thought about Susan as an LMM stand-in, but I think you're right! The way the anticipation/dread of the news arriving overshadowed the whole household felt like it was lifted directly from LMM's journals, and Susan really embodied that. 3w

Daisey I haven‘t been reading the journals, but I definitely got more of the daily WWI experience aspect this time just having more knowledge myself of events mentioned. I had forgotten just how much that was the entire focus of the story. 3w

kwmg40 I really liked how LMM incorporated so many of the details of everyday life during WWI. It seemed more authentic to me than many historical novels I'd read, since this wasn't really historical fiction but a novel written very soon after the actual events. I also learned some things. I hadn't realized that DST began in Canada as a result of WWI! 2w

BarbaraJean @Daisey @kwmg40 Yes, I think one of the big strengths of this novel is how it focuses on the daily experience of WWI on the home front in Canada, and how that daily life was affected by events abroad. I hadn't realized that about DST either! (And I have to admit, I agree with Susan about DST and admire her commitment to continue living on “God's Time“ in every way she could 😆) 2w

Rilla ambitiously takes on the care of an infant—a “war-baby”—in spite of the fact she does NOT like babies.

What did you think of this storyline?
How does Jims contribute to Rilla‘s own growth?

lauraisntwilder I think it's a nice part of the book even if it does remind me of those dolls high schoolers have to take care of to scare them out of teen pregnancy, except Jims is a real baby! It does make Rilla grow up, but so does everything else going on. It also says a lot about Gilbert, who clearly thinks young Rilla is too flighty. 3w

BarbaraJean @lauraisntwilder 😂 I love the high school parallel! I found this storyline kind of random before--there are enough other things going on that grow Rilla up that throwing a baby in there seemed unnecessary (other than making her “motherly“ 🙄). But I was impressed this time around how LMM gave Rilla such an aversion to babies and didn't have her quickly fall in love with Jims! That felt like a nice counterbalance, and keeps Rilla from being ⬇ 3w

BarbaraJean (Cont'd) ...a stereotype: the girl who aspires to being wife and mother. We're told Rilla has no ambitions, and it's refreshing that the narrative doesn't flatten her into wifehood by default. Yes, she longs for Ken to return from the war and marry her, but LMM deepens Rilla beyond the default female roles of the time even as Rilla grows into those roles, if that makes sense. Somehow the way LMM handles the Jims narrative is part of that. 3w

kwmg40 I did like this storyline, as it gave the impetus for much of the development of Rilla's character. I liked seeing how some of her attitudes change as she grows but also how, in some ways, she still retains her youthful ways. 2w

LMM weaves in a number of female characters who contrast with Rilla—in age, in maturity, in personality—and who together offer a full, rich picture of women on the “home front” in WWI.

What did you think of the way women‘s roles were portrayed in the novel?
Which characters besides Rilla were you most drawn to?
Which attitudes toward the war did you most resonate with?

BarbaraJean I haven't much liked Susan in previous books, and I LOVED her here. She grew on me the way Rachel Lynde did! I love Susan's spirit and her intense interest in the war news. And the way she chases off old Whiskers-on-the-moon after his presumptuous proposal. 😂 Speaking of whom, I was conflicted about the book's portrayal of pacifism. Mr. Pryor was AWFUL, and I hated him being the only voice that didn't seem to toe the party line, so to speak. ⬇ 3w

BarbaraJean (Cont'd) His infamous prayer that their soldiers would repent from iniquity and murder was “abominable,“ as Norman Douglas said! But the various comments that he was a traitor and that he was rooting for the Germans--because he was a pacifist--were equally terrible. Those parts read like wartime propaganda. But then there was some nuance in various other comments, from Miss Oliver, to Gilbert, to Rev. Meredith. Thus my conflict. 3w

Readying Rilla: L.M. Montgomery's Reworking of Rilla of Ingleside

This is one of my all-time favorite books and I have read it probably 25-30 times over my lifetime. The characters, the setting, the fact that a few of the moments in this book still make me choke up even after all these rereads - this book is close to perfect to me.

SO IT WAS A COMPLETE SHOCK to find out that in the 1940s random sentences/paragraphs were edited out!!! The edition I grew up reading, despite clearly saying it was “unabridged“ ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) was, in fact, abridged! As was virtually every edition published from 1942-2010! But in 2010 a restored text was published. Since I didn't know it existed, I didn't seek it out, but I just so happened to purchase this edition a couple of years ago as my old faithful Bantam paperback is wearing out and I love this cover. Turns out, it's the 2010 text. So obviously I didn't read the two editions side by side noting every passage I could ⬇ 3w

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) find that had been removed, because that would be ridiculous. But if I did, the note in the picture indicates how heavily each chapter was edited - ✔is unabridged, - is only a couple words or a sentence, + is several sentences, and ++ is multiple paragraphs.

I'm still completely befuddled as to why these passages were removed. It's true, nothing vital was taken out, but there are moments of humor, depth, and character, that were cut. ⬇ 3w

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) A lot of the editing were various speeches of Susan's, so maybe they just decided they didn't like her character...???? But other moments, like Rilla clinging to hope so as to not 'break faith' with Walter, Anne recounting the hair-dying episode of her youth, or more details of how Dog Monday settled in at the station, seemed so arbitrary to remove.

So it was kind of fun to do a little treasure hunt and discover that there is even more ⬇ 3w

TheAromaofBooks @BarbaraJean - You can let me know if you find anything in the chapters I thought were intact - sometimes it would just be even a word. For instance, one time Rilla is cuddling Jims and says something like “I hope your poor little mother knows you're safe.“ Except in the original it's “poor little white mother“ and they cut the word white - which I feel like in this instance is more a reference to her being frail/sick rather than her actual race?⬇ 3w

Happy Sunday! These are a couple of books I‘m very much looking forward to for May.

I‘m going to listen to Rilla on audio since I‘ve yet to start, and after yesterday‘s posts compare passages to my print copy.

As for Lamentation, I read most of Heartstone in ebook, and I may have to do the same for this one so I can fit pages in when and where I can without carrying this hardback around.

@BarbaraJean - this is my edition that has the missing passages. Interestingly, I was able to buy the entire series in these editions... except the infamous Anne of Windy Poplars! I think it's interesting that this edition apparently went back to the original text.

I haven't actually started reading this book yet this time around, but after your post I just started flipping through wondering if I would actually notice, and these two (from chapters 9 and 10) immediately jumped out at me as ones that seemed unfamiliar. I'm sooo intrigued to reread this now! I can't believe they edited out Rilla remembering a “weird tale“ about how her ⬇ 4w

BarbaraJean This is SO interesting to me!! For the same reason as you, I got a new set last time we read the series—I opted for the Tundra editions because I loved the covers so much. And apparently those ones use the 1942 version of the text, with the passages missing—but the ebook has the older, public domain version, from before they cut stuff out. Now I want to compare the two, paragraph by paragraph!! This one and the examples I posted seem like such ⤵️ 4w

I found something very puzzling while reading Rilla this week. I often switch between print and ebook when I have both and one is more convenient. I was reading the ebook over lunch and was mid-chapter when I switched back to print. In scanning through to find my place, I discovered sections in the ebook that aren‘t in the print version. I checked it against both print copies I have—both are missing the highlighted passages above. What?!? ⤵️

BarbaraJean (Cont‘d) I‘m curious about others‘ copies—what version are you reading and what do these sections look like in your copy? This is around the middle of “Moonlit Mirth” (Chapter 3). I‘m reading an ebook version called “The Anne Stories” from Timeless Reads—a collection of most of LMM‘s books & short stories. My print copies are the Tundra edition with the Elly MacKay cover, and my old faithful Bantam paperback. #KindredSpiritsBuddyRead #LMMReread 1mo

BarbaraJean @CSeydel I'm so curious about why! I know there are variations in the text in different versions of Windy Poplars (UK vs. US/Canadian), but I didn't think there were different versions of the text of Rilla. I just checked Wikipedia and found the below ⬇ 1mo

The first one especially feels very abrupt to me, seeing both versions side by side. I'm just reading the ebook version now, to make sure I get the full text--and I kind of want to pull out my paperback to check it every time I come across something anti-German! 1mo

TheAromaofBooks That is so crazy! I have two editions: a later Bantam edition (1998) that is missing the passages. However, last time we read through the series I purchased the Aladdin paperbacks with the pretty covers as my Bantam copies are getting rather worn. And the Aladdin edition has the passages! It was published in 2015. I was already planning to read the Aladdin version this time, and now I definitely will. How crazy that it was edited after her death! 4w

lauraisntwilder I didn't read this until 2023 and my copy is a UK edition from 2020, which I assume is a reprint of the public domain version. It has both of these passages -- and they were in the audiobook from 2018. 3w

BarbaraJean @CSeydel I think this one works really well as a standalone. It does refer back to some things in Rainbow Valley, but not key plot points. Rainbow Valley focuses on the older kids rather than Rilla—it‘s kind of like she‘s a whole new character! And Anne is completely in the background. (edited) 1mo

TheAromaofBooks I am definitely in for rereading both of these. Rilla is possibly my favorite LMM book. (Okay, maybe not; it's actually kind of impossible to choose 😂) I love Pollyanna as well, although in some ways the Hayley Mills version ruined the book for me because it's so hard to see the characters as anything other than the way they were cast in that book, despite them not being completely accurate. 😆 1mo

TheAromaofBooks @rubyslippersreads - I love the movie, too - but usually I can separate movie/book when they aren't particularly alike and just have them be two different stories in my mind. But for some reason the individuals from that movie INSIST on being the imagined book-characters in my mind 😂 It's not as bad in the first book, but in later books Pollyanna and Jimmy get married, and trying to reconcile Haley marrying Kevin Corcoran has been a struggle 😆 1mo

I haven't read many WW1 books, let alone from a teen Canadian girls perspective. In this book Rilla is left at home as her brothers and friends leave to join the fight. The book is half journal and is an insight into her day to day life during the war.

I may still read The Blythes Are Quoted & the Chronicles of Avonlea books at some point, but I think I'm done with Anne for a little while. This one was SO much better than the last 3 books! But there were so many things I wish had been included that weren't. How did things go for Diana during WWI? Or the girls from Anne's Patty's Place days? Davy & Dora aren't even mentioned! It struck me as tragic that Marilla died between books with no fanfare.

2. This is tough - I read all over the place. Romance, I guess??
3. There are so many that I love and revisit. LM Montgomery is on my mind, though, so at this exact moment I may go with The Blue Castle 😂

Up until now the books in the Anne series have been great escapist reads into a world where nothing bad can happen. All that changes with this book. Despite the seriousness and darkness of this book, I liked following Rilla and see her grow.

I guess I was more prepared for hardly any Anne in this book

BarbaraJean I‘m of two minds about which books really are “Anne” books. There‘s so little Anne in Rilla & Rainbow Valley; they feel like companion books rather than part of a series. When I think of the Anne series, I think of books 1-5 as the core, and the others as extras. On this re-read, I found House of Dreams and Rilla to be my favorites (other than the first book, which will always be so beloved!). Anne of Ingleside is my least favorite, hands down! (edited) 4y

Bkwrm7 As a fan of generational sagas, I've always been fine considering Rilla as the end of the Anne series despite its lack of Anne. Rilla has long been my second favorite in the series after the original with Anne of the Island as third favorite thanks to Patty's Place. On this reread, the sad parts of Rilla did hit me harder though. Anne of Ingleside is probably my least favorite, too, due to its lack of overarching plot to tie its stories together. 4y

quietjenn Like @bkwrm7, I'm fine considering them all of a series, even though the focus shifts over the course of the last few books. I'm with you all that Anne of Ingleside is by far my least favorite. But it's so hard to rank the ones that I loved, although I think if *forced* to rank them, it would look pretty similar. Original, followed by Rilla, then House of Dreams followed very closely by Island. 4y

Clare-Dragonfly I don‘t often cry at books but I teared up near the end when Dog Monday greeted the returning Jem. Such a sweet dog! Susan is my favorite, though. She‘s just a ton of fun. 4y

Clare-Dragonfly Rilla‘s romance with Ken is sweet. I don‘t have much hope for their longevity though. 🤷🏻‍♀️ They don‘t seem to communicate very effectively or know each other super well. But maybe they‘ll have a long engagement like Anne and Gilbert and get to know one another that way. 4y

BarbaraJean @Clare-Dragonfly 💜Dog Monday💜 I lost it when he howled all night for Walter. Dog Monday is one of the only things I remembered from reading this when I was young! I loved Susan‘s loyalty & how fiery she was! She totally grew on me between House of Dreams (where I didn‘t care for her) and Rilla. I just loved Walter in this book, though—and the friendship he and Rilla have. 😭💔 4y

BarbaraJean I found the romance with Ken kind of empty and unnecessary. It seemed Montgomery felt she needed to throw in an obligatory wartime romance for the heroine. @Clare-Dragonfly I agree they didn‘t seem to know each other well, but then again, so many of the romances in these books feel that way!! (edited) 4y

Bkwrm7 I don't remember questioning the romance in previous rereads the way I did this time. She's only 14 when the book begins and Kenneth first gets interested in her. 14! And they barely spend any time together. At least there are the letters they write each other, but at the end of the war they are undoubtedly very different people than they were at the beginning. 4y

quietjenn All the love to Dog Monday! I'm good with Rilla and Ken's romance. Although we don't see them too much together, I just assumed they had a lot of platonic history from his visits over the summers of her youth and I'm always fond of stories where that kind of relationship evolves into love. And I really loved the last line and it was a nice moment of levity and a smile, at the end of a book that I found very melancholy. 4y

Jerdencon I never really understand romances back in the olden days - like you spend an hour with someone and you fall madly in love but I hope it works out for Rilla and ken because war definitely changes a guy. 4y

AnneCecilie I loved Dog Monday and this book had me in tears more than once. I‘m not sure the romance was necessary, but I didn‘t mind it. 4y

BarbaraJean One of the key moments that stuck out for me in Rilla‘s growth was her managing of Irene Howard, and how she realizes they‘ll never be friends the way they used to. Rilla gets over her hero-worship and sees Irene‘s insincerity and pettiness for what it is. 4y

quietjenn I keep trying to answer this and erasing all my comments, because I can't quite find the right words. Rilla is more mature and sober, less flighty and superficial by the end of the book. Which may have happened over the course of four years anyway, but I think not mostly. Key moments would be the night of the dance, and all the moments with Walter. The fact that she is able to give away his last letter seems like a good example of her growth. 4y

Jerdencon I definitely see a huge growth in rilla - she goes from being spoiled to really being insightful and grown up. 4y

AnneCecilie I think some of her growth started with her talks with Walter and he confiding in her. Raising a baby. 4y

Clare-Dragonfly I thought it was pretty realistic except for Anne not being involved at all 😂 I know she‘s raised her own children but come on, the love of children is one of her biggest personality traits! 4y

BarbaraJean @Clare-Dragonfly 😂You‘re right, it‘s really out of character for Anne to not comment on how “delicious” a baby is! I chalked Anne‘s lack of involvement up to her wanting Rilla to take responsibility and not expect others to care for the baby when Rilla brought it home (gosh, this is sounding like Jims was a stray dog…😆) 4y

Clare-Dragonfly I really struggled with their attitude toward the war and the narration‘s assumption that it is the only right attitude. Pacifists are treated as ridiculous and the enemy. I realized I don‘t know very much about WWI and I don‘t grasp what is so self-evident about its rightness for the characters. Especially since they are Canadian, not British! 4y

BarbaraJean @Clare-Dragonfly Exactly. This is a struggle for me with “patriotism”—being a pacifist doesn‘t make you unpatriotic, and being patriotic doesn‘t mean you ignore governmental failings that need reform. I don‘t understand a lot about WWI either, other than Germany‘s overreach in invading neighboring countries. I appreciated seeing the Canadian perspective, though—and how it did become a Canadian cause. I don‘t usually consider Canada‘s role! 4y

Bkwrm7 Yes! I was going to mention how oddly the one-sided attitude toward the war sat with me during this re-reading in the first question. Having Walter included is vital because otherwise there is no nuance at all. 4y

quietjenn I agree with what others have said. Knowing what is, for us and for them is yet to come, made it rough. I can acknowledge that maybe it made sense at the time, but with historical perspective, it really increased the sadness and melancholia of the book for me. So many people killed in a tragic, misguided war. Which led directly to not only World War 2 just twenty odd years later but so many other issues that continue to impact the world. 4y

AnneCecilie I think than in war there are no room from grey areas, all is either black or white and you are either with us or against us. Being a part of the commonwealth Canada is a part of the UK and that seem to be important to the boys that went first. And for the families left behind, they need to believe that they sent their boys to fight for a reason. Being a pacifist in this situation is treacherous. 4y

Clare-Dragonfly I would say it‘s a war novel, at least as much as Gone With the Wind (no idea if that‘s considered a war novel)—the main character‘s entire story arc is shaped and determined by the war. 4y

Bkwrm7 I agree that I would categorize this as a war novel. It was interesting to see a variety of perspectives on the war from those on the homefront. 4y

quietjenn I'm no expert, but it seemed to me like a fairly accurate account of what life might be like for women during the war and what sort of concerns and issues they'd be dealing with. I would definitely consider it a war novel, since the conflict is what drives so much of the book and colors all the situations we see the characters dealing with. The war isn't in the background or a mere part of the setting. 4y

Jerdencon I was on vacation so late to answering - but I agree that it was interesting to see the woman‘s point of view of war. I definitely think it‘s a war novel especially when they discuss various battles. 4y

TheAromaofBooks I genuinely love Susan so much. And the scene towards the end where she talks about what they've all be willing to give to keep their flag flying - man, that guts me every time! 4y

LeahBergen Have you thought of reading this one next? It is the unpublished “9th” volume that was awaiting publication when LM died. It‘s a volume of stories which contains Walter‘s Piper poem and bits of Anne and Gilbert‘s lives up to WW2. Amongst other things! I‘m going to read it next. 😊

Rilla of Ingleside: A Virago Modern Classic | L. M. Montgomery

I know a few of us had been talking about reading other L. M. Montgomery books after Rilla—but it turns out my edition has a bunch of short stories. Would anyone be interested in reading those? #kindredspiritsbuddyread

TheAromaofBooks I'm always up for more Montgomery. I will say that The Story Girl & The Golden Road are actually both full-length books (Golden Road is the sequel to Story Girl). 4y

quietjenn I think Kilmeny is an entire book too? In any case, I'd certainly be game. Maybe we could start with the Avonlea short stories to ease out of Anne mode and then dip into the others? Not entirely sure which short stories are included in the Watchman and Short Story collection (she wrote a *ton* of short stories, but we could figure it out! 4y

BarbaraJean I totally missed this, but yes, I'm interested! I've had The Story Girl and The Golden Road on my list forever but haven't read them yet (but as @TheAromaofBooks said, those are full-length books). I like @quietjenn's idea of reading the Avonlea short stories after Anne. I've been jonesing for a re-read of the Emily books, but it would be nice to go back to Avonlea for a bit! (edited) 4y

Finally finished my reread of the Anne of Green Gables books!

This final book is a departure from the rest of the series in several ways so I have a hard time seeing this as an Anne book. But it was nice to revisit and be reminded of how different in tone & content this is.

Last night‘s chapter was kind of stressful. The war stuff is bad enough, but with a newborn baby… I was having flashbacks to when my son was tiny and needed to be fed around the clock 😅 And then as I was falling asleep last night he woke up and screamed and needed comforting which, at 3, he almost never does. #KindredSpiritsBuddyRead

Have we really come to the last book of our #kindredspirits readalong? What a joy it's been to revisit some and experience others for the first time. Not sure I want to give up a regular fix of LMM, so thinking I might reread some others after this. I remember loving Emily and Jane just as much as (if not more) than Anne ...

quietjenn @LeahBergen I'm definitely going to do the Emily books, then maybe just keep working through my bookshelf 😉 I only read the Pat books about five or six years ago, for the first time. According to my Goodreads comments, I was pretty lukewarm on the first, but rather liked the second one 🤷‍♀️ There are definitely some Montgomery's I don't think I I ever read, so might as well get to those, too ... 4y

Daisey This book of the series is even set in a very specific time period. Who would ever put such a cover image? Cover art often makes me a little crazy, and this is just too much. 4y

TheAromaofBooks Yes, like @rubyslippersreads said - I believe Windy Poplars and Anne of Ingleside were written out of order when Montgomery didn't really want to write them, although I just learned that a few years ago!! Rilla is possibly my favorite of the series. It makes me cry every time! 4y

I love this book so much. The characters are relatable, real, and likeable. I feel like I have grown and matured as Rilla did in the book. When I first read it, in my teens, I only noticed how romantic young love was during a war. How sweet was Una when Walter started to appreciate her, except it was too late. Now, I read it as a mother, and I relate more to Anne and Susan who sacrificed so much. #heycarrots @thegirlwiththelibrarybag @Flingogal

Butterfinger @jewright I love Walter so much. There has never been another character that has touched me so much. It is funny, I have not read this since I was a teen, but all I remembered was Walter. I forgot all about the baby. 5y
