Rilla of Ingleside
Rilla of Ingleside: A Virago Modern Classic | L. M. Montgomery
The eighth book in the Anne Shirley series. Anne Shirley's children are almost all grown up - except for pretty, high-spirited Rilla, who is now almost fifteen years old. No one can resist Rilla's bright hazel eyes and dazzling smile, and Rilla herself can think no further ahead than going to her very first dance at the Four Winds lighthouse - and getting her first kiss from handsome Kenneth Ford! But at the dance, news is brought that England has declared war on Germany. At first, this means little to Rilla, on the threshold of so many new excitements. But as her brothers go off to fight in the Great War and Rilla brings home an orphaned newborn baby in a soup tureen, she is swept into a drama that tests her courage and will leave her changed for ever... A collection will be coveted by children and adults alike, this list is the best in children's literature, curated by Virago. These are timeless tales with beautiful covers, that will be treasured and shared across the generations. Some titles you will already know; some will be new to you, but there are stories for everyone to love, whatever your age. Our list includes Nina Bawden (Carrie's War, The Peppermint Pig), Rumer Godden (The Dark Horse, An Episode of Sparrows), Joan Aiken (The Serial Garden, The Gift Giving) E. Nesbit (The Psammead Trilogy, The Bastable Trilogy, The Railway Children), Frances Hodgson Burnett (The Little Princess,The Secret Garden) and Susan Coolidge (The What Katy Did Trilogy). I may still read The Blythes Are Quoted & the Chronicles of Avonlea books at some point, but I think I'm done with Anne for a little while. This one was SO much better than the last 3 books! But there were so many things I wish had been included that weren't. How did things go for Diana during WWI? Or the girls from Anne's Patty's Place days? Davy & Dora aren't even mentioned! It struck me as tragic that Marilla died between books with no fanfare.

Thanks for the tag @Eggs @TheSpineView
1. I'm not sure about “the most“ but I have read this book probably 20 times and it does make me cry every time.
2. This is tough - I read all over the place. Romance, I guess??
3. There are so many that I love and revisit. LM Montgomery is on my mind, though, so at this exact moment I may go with The Blue Castle 😂

Up until now the books in the Anne series have been great escapist reads into a world where nothing bad can happen. All that changes with this book. Despite the seriousness and darkness of this book, I liked following Rilla and see her grow.

I guess I was more prepared for hardly any Anne in this book

6a: What do you think about this book as the last volume in the Anne series? Is it a good conclusion? Or with its complete focus on Rilla (and so little Anne), do you feel it belongs in the series at all?
6b: Thinking back on the series overall, how does Rilla stack up for you against the other books? Which are your favorite and least favorite books in the series?
#KindredSpiritsBuddyRead

BarbaraJean I‘m of two minds about which books really are “Anne” books. There‘s so little Anne in Rilla & Rainbow Valley; they feel like companion books rather than part of a series. When I think of the Anne series, I think of books 1-5 as the core, and the others as extras. On this re-read, I found House of Dreams and Rilla to be my favorites (other than the first book, which will always be so beloved!). Anne of Ingleside is my least favorite, hands down! (edited) 3y
Bkwrm7 As a fan of generational sagas, I've always been fine considering Rilla as the end of the Anne series despite its lack of Anne. Rilla has long been my second favorite in the series after the original with Anne of the Island as third favorite thanks to Patty's Place. On this reread, the sad parts of Rilla did hit me harder though. Anne of Ingleside is probably my least favorite, too, due to its lack of overarching plot to tie its stories together. 3y
quietjenn Like @bkwrm7, I'm fine considering them all of a series, even though the focus shifts over the course of the last few books. I'm with you all that Anne of Ingleside is by far my least favorite. But it's so hard to rank the ones that I loved, although I think if *forced* to rank them, it would look pretty similar. Original, followed by Rilla, then House of Dreams followed very closely by Island. 3y
See All 7 Comments
LeahBergen My order of favourites: Green Gables, Island, House of Dreams, Rilla. And I totally agree with everyone‘s least fave, Ingleside. 3y
Jerdencon I enjoyed this book - but would have liked more Anne. 3y
Jerdencon To rank them I would say Anne house of dreams was my favorite, following by the original. 3y
AnneCecilie I don‘t like to rank books, but the first one is my favorite, and like you @BarbaraJean I feel like the last books isn‘t really Anne books since there‘s so little Anne in them. 3y

5a: There are so many memorable characters: Susan, Baby Jims, Little Dog Monday…and of course, Jem & Walter. What stands out to you about these “side” characters? Which were most compelling to you?
5b: How do you feel about the ending—and Rilla‘s romance with Ken overall? From the promise of romance at the dance, to its realization at the end—does the romance provide nice bookends to the novel? Or is it even needed?
#KindredSpiritsBuddyRead

Clare-Dragonfly I don‘t often cry at books but I teared up near the end when Dog Monday greeted the returning Jem. Such a sweet dog! Susan is my favorite, though. She‘s just a ton of fun. 3y
Clare-Dragonfly Rilla‘s romance with Ken is sweet. I don‘t have much hope for their longevity though. 🤷🏻‍♀️ They don‘t seem to communicate very effectively or know each other super well. But maybe they‘ll have a long engagement like Anne and Gilbert and get to know one another that way. 3y
BarbaraJean @Clare-Dragonfly 💜Dog Monday💜 I lost it when he howled all night for Walter. Dog Monday is one of the only things I remembered from reading this when I was young! I loved Susan‘s loyalty & how fiery she was! She totally grew on me between House of Dreams (where I didn‘t care for her) and Rilla. I just loved Walter in this book, though—and the friendship he and Rilla have. 😭💔 3y
See All 10 Comments
BarbaraJean I found the romance with Ken kind of empty and unnecessary. It seemed Montgomery felt she needed to throw in an obligatory wartime romance for the heroine. @Clare-Dragonfly I agree they didn‘t seem to know each other well, but then again, so many of the romances in these books feel that way!! (edited) 3y
Bkwrm7 I don't remember questioning the romance in previous rereads the way I did this time. She's only 14 when the book begins and Kenneth first gets interested in her. 14! And they barely spend any time together. At least there are the letters they write each other, but at the end of the war they are undoubtedly very different people than they were at the beginning. 3y
quietjenn All the love to Dog Monday! I'm good with Rilla and Ken's romance. Although we don't see them too much together, I just assumed they had a lot of platonic history from his visits over the summers of her youth and I'm always fond of stories where that kind of relationship evolves into love. And I really loved the last line and it was a nice moment of levity and a smile, at the end of a book that I found very melancholy. 3y
LeahBergen My heart still hurts for Dog Monday. 😆 And yes, @quietjenn … I loved that last line! 3y
Jerdencon Loved Dog Monday!!! 3y
Jerdencon I never really understand romances back in the olden days - like you spend an hour with someone and you fall madly in love but I hope it works out for Rilla and ken because war definitely changes a guy. 3y
AnneCecilie I loved Dog Monday and this book had me in tears more than once. I‘m not sure the romance was necessary, but I didn‘t mind it. 3y

Rilla acknowledges how the war has shaped her: “I expected that these past four years would be the most delightful years of my life and they have been years of war—years of fear and grief and worry—but I humbly hope, of a little growth in strength and character as well.”
4a: What contrasts did you observe between Rilla at the beginning of the book and Rilla at the end?
4b: What do you see as key turning points for her?
#KindredSpiritsBuddyRead

BarbaraJean One of the key moments that stuck out for me in Rilla‘s growth was her managing of Irene Howard, and how she realizes they‘ll never be friends the way they used to. Rilla gets over her hero-worship and sees Irene‘s insincerity and pettiness for what it is. 3y
quietjenn I keep trying to answer this and erasing all my comments, because I can't quite find the right words. Rilla is more mature and sober, less flighty and superficial by the end of the book. Which may have happened over the course of four years anyway, but I think not mostly. Key moments would be the night of the dance, and all the moments with Walter. The fact that she is able to give away his last letter seems like a good example of her growth. 3y
Jerdencon I definitely see a huge growth in rilla - she goes from being spoiled to really being insightful and grown up. 3y
AnneCecilie I think some of her growth started with her talks with Walter and he confiding in her. Raising a baby. 3y

We‘ve got another orphan storyline in Rilla!
3a: What are your thoughts on 15-year-old Rilla‘s taking on the responsibility of raising a baby?
3b: How did you feel about her initial attitude toward babies (“I don‘t like you & I never will but for all that I‘m going to make a decent, upstanding infant of you” and “If I can‘t love you I mean to be proud of you”)? What did you think of how it changes as she cares for Jims?
#KindredSpiritsBuddyRead

Clare-Dragonfly I thought it was pretty realistic except for Anne not being involved at all 😂 I know she‘s raised her own children but come on, the love of children is one of her biggest personality traits! 3y
BarbaraJean @Clare-Dragonfly 😂You‘re right, it‘s really out of character for Anne to not comment on how “delicious” a baby is! I chalked Anne‘s lack of involvement up to her wanting Rilla to take responsibility and not expect others to care for the baby when Rilla brought it home (gosh, this is sounding like Jims was a stray dog…😆) 3y
quietjenn I thought it was very amusing and a refreshing characterization for Rilla. 3y
See All 7 Comments
LeahBergen I loved that Jims was “returned” with the soup tureen. 🤣🤣 3y
Jerdencon @LeahBergen yes! That was great. 3y
Jerdencon @Clare-Dragonfly I was wishing there was more about Anne in the whole book. I understand she wanted to teach Rilla about responsibility but she was so hands off. 3y
AnneCecilie It felt realistic because not everyone loves babies. Rilla‘s change of heart towards Jims also felt real 3y

Although the book portrays a range of attitudes toward the war, I found myself cringing a little at the harshness most characters displayed toward any pacifism or reluctance about the war.
2a: How did these passages feel for you, reading the text through your own modern lens?
2b: What do you think patriotism & national pride should look like—especially now, when there may be even more need for nuance in these areas?
#KindredSpiritsBuddyRead

Clare-Dragonfly I really struggled with their attitude toward the war and the narration‘s assumption that it is the only right attitude. Pacifists are treated as ridiculous and the enemy. I realized I don‘t know very much about WWI and I don‘t grasp what is so self-evident about its rightness for the characters. Especially since they are Canadian, not British! 3y
BarbaraJean @Clare-Dragonfly Exactly. This is a struggle for me with “patriotism”—being a pacifist doesn‘t make you unpatriotic, and being patriotic doesn‘t mean you ignore governmental failings that need reform. I don‘t understand a lot about WWI either, other than Germany‘s overreach in invading neighboring countries. I appreciated seeing the Canadian perspective, though—and how it did become a Canadian cause. I don‘t usually consider Canada‘s role! 3y
Bkwrm7 Yes! I was going to mention how oddly the one-sided attitude toward the war sat with me during this re-reading in the first question. Having Walter included is vital because otherwise there is no nuance at all. 3y
quietjenn I agree with what others have said. Knowing what is, for us and for them is yet to come, made it rough. I can acknowledge that maybe it made sense at the time, but with historical perspective, it really increased the sadness and melancholia of the book for me. So many people killed in a tragic, misguided war. Which led directly to not only World War 2 just twenty odd years later but so many other issues that continue to impact the world. 3y
AnneCecilie I think than in war there are no room from grey areas, all is either black or white and you are either with us or against us. Being a part of the commonwealth Canada is a part of the UK and that seem to be important to the boys that went first. And for the families left behind, they need to believe that they sent their boys to fight for a reason. Being a pacifist in this situation is treacherous. 3y

1a: This is a female-centric look at WWI, written by a contemporary. What do you think of the book‘s portrayal of female roles during wartime, and its characterization of female attitudes toward the war?
1b: Is this a war novel, with its emphasis on the experiences of women on the “home front” rather than soldiers in battle? What makes a war novel?
#KindredSpiritsBuddyRead

Clare-Dragonfly I would say it‘s a war novel, at least as much as Gone With the Wind (no idea if that‘s considered a war novel)—the main character‘s entire story arc is shaped and determined by the war. 3y
Bkwrm7 I agree that I would categorize this as a war novel. It was interesting to see a variety of perspectives on the war from those on the homefront. 3y
quietjenn I'm no expert, but it seemed to me like a fairly accurate account of what life might be like for women during the war and what sort of concerns and issues they'd be dealing with. I would definitely consider it a war novel, since the conflict is what drives so much of the book and colors all the situations we see the characters dealing with. The war isn't in the background or a mere part of the setting. 3y
Jerdencon I was on vacation so late to answering - but I agree that it was interesting to see the woman‘s point of view of war. I definitely think it‘s a war novel especially when they discuss various battles. 3y
AnneCecilie I agree that this is women‘s view on war and a war novel. 3y

#KindredSpiritsBuddyRead-ers: we've been talking about reading more L.M. Montgomery after we finish the Anne series, so I put together a little poll to see what there's most interest in reading next, as well what schedule people might prefer (continue chapter-a-day? switch to one book/month?). If you're interested in continuing on (or joining for the first time!), please follow the link in the comments and send me your feedback!

LeahBergen Have you thought of reading this one next? It is the unpublished “9th” volume that was awaiting publication when LM died. It‘s a volume of stories which contains Walter‘s Piper poem and bits of Anne and Gilbert‘s lives up to WW2. Amongst other things! I‘m going to read it next. 😊 (edited) 3y
AnneCecilie Thanks for organizing these buddy reads. I‘ve filled out the form according to the books I already own or can borrow from the library. That doesn‘t mean that I won‘t buy any of the others 😉 3y

BarbaraJean @LeahBergen I have thought about it and didn‘t bring it up because I‘ve seen such terrible reviews!! I‘m interested, because I‘m a bit of a completionist, but I‘m not sure how many others are! But you know, I‘ll add it to the poll and see how people feel. 3y
BarbaraJean @AnneCecilie You are so welcome! It‘s been so much fun! And I‘m also very much eyeing other Montgomeries I might buy... 3y
BarbaraJean @Jerdencon So glad to hear you‘ve enjoyed them—I always wonder how well they hold up for people who didn‘t read them as a child! Looking forward to having you continue the readalong. 😊 3y

TheAromaofBooks Ooo thanks for organizing!! I haven't been very chatty with the series readalong but it's been much longer since I've read Montgomery's other books - I've definitely been meaning to get to them!! 3y
quietjenn I am certainly down for more reading, as I'm sure you've gathered from my comments here and there. Will fill out the poll as soon as I finish typing this comment. Super appreciate you taking the organizing lead, but also wanted to say that if you want help so it's not all on you, I'm happy to do anything you might need! Just let me know! 3y

I know a few of us had been talking about reading other L. M. Montgomery books after Rilla—but it turns out my edition has a bunch of short stories. Would anyone be interested in reading those? #kindredspiritsbuddyread

TheAromaofBooks I'm always up for more Montgomery. I will say that The Story Girl & The Golden Road are actually both full-length books (Golden Road is the sequel to Story Girl). 3y
quietjenn I think Kilmeny is an entire book too? In any case, I'd certainly be game. Maybe we could start with the Avonlea short stories to ease out of Anne mode and then dip into the others? Not entirely sure which short stories are included in the Watchman and Short Story collection (she wrote a *ton* of short stories, but we could figure it out! 3y
BarbaraJean I totally missed this, but yes, I'm interested! I've had The Story Girl and The Golden Road on my list forever but haven't read them yet (but as @TheAromaofBooks said, those are full-length books). When I first read it, in my teens, I only noticed how romantic young love was during a war. How sweet was Una when Walter started to appreciate her, except it was too late. Now, I read it as a mother, and I relate more to Anne and Susan who sacrificed so much. #heycarrots @thegirlwiththelibrarybag @Flingogal

thegirlwiththelibrarybag Congratulations on making it to the end 🥕 4y

Butterfinger @jewright I love Walter so much. There has never been another character that has touched me so much. It is funny, I have not read this since I was a teen, but all I remembered was Walter. I forgot all about the baby. 4y

I don't even know where to start the review for this one because I love it so much. It's possibly my favorite in the series, although in many ways it stands on its own, with its focus on Anne's youngest daughter and the war as the backdrop. Montgomery does an absolutely brilliant job writing a war-time book that isn't anywhere close to the war's physical location. The story opens with Rilla, just turned 15 and a smidge spoiled, looking forward ⬇️

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) to the next four years as ones of fun & frivolity. But when Canada joins England in WWI, everything changes as Rilla's brothers & friends head to war.

At its heart, this is a story about women. These days it's very popular to write about women who DO THINGS, which is fine. But historically, the majority of women (like the majority of men) were quiet folk who lived their lives & did their duty for their family & homes, & that's what ⬇
4y
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) this story is about. Rilla doesn't run off to war dressed as a boy. She doesn't even join up with the Red Cross & become a nurse in France. Instead, she stays home & does her best to help her parents & her neighborhood be a better, stronger place. She organizes a Jr. Red Cross, faces her fear of public speaking, raises a war baby, & writes letters of love & encouragement to the ones she knows on the front.

Even though I've read this ⬇
4y
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) book dozens of times, it still makes me choke up several times & I cried yesterday during the one big tragedy that I already knew was coming. Yet Montgomery handles it so well that even that is kept in perspective & is somehow beautiful even in its sadness.

The side story of faithful Dog Monday who waits at the train station greeting every train for four years, waiting for Jem to come back just absolutely wrecks me every time. ⬇
4y

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) To me, this quote summarizes so much of what Montgomery was saying throughout this story - “[Susan] went out & ran up the flag ... As it caught the breeze & swelled gallantly out above her, Susan lifted her hand & saluted it .. 'We've all given something to keep you flying,' she said. 'Four hundred thousand of our boys gone overseas - fifty thousand of them killed. But - you are worth it!' The wind whipped her gray hair about her face & ⬇ 4y
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) the gingham apron that shrouded her from head to foot was cut on lines of economy, not of grace; yet, somehow, just then Susan made an imposing figure. She was one of the women - courageous, unquailing, patient, heroic - who had made victory possible. In her, they saluted the symbol for which their dearest had fought.“

Sorry for the long review, but this really is one of my favorites. I think because Montgomery herself lived through ⬇
4y
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) the war, it is such a personal story. And it's not all sad, either - there are also parts that make me laugh out loud every time I read it. Because no matter what horrific things are going on in the world, there are still those moments in time where something good happens & that is what keeps us going. 4y
TheAromaofBooks As for mundane information, I'm making progress on #BookSpinBingo & finishing this book is book 1/6 for #NovelNovember - I gulped down all 400+ pages yesterday! Despite being a reread - or maybe because it was - I could barely put it down.

@Andrew65
4y
AmyK1 I really love this one too ❤️ 4y
Chrissyreadit This is my favorite also! 4y
Buechersuechtling A beautiful review that makes me want to read that book/series even though “WW”-stories are far away from being my favourites. 😊 4y
LitStephanie Great review! 4y
Andrew65 It looks like I need to read this. 4y
TheAromaofBooks @AmyK1 @Chrissyreadit - Even though I've read this one so often that literally nothing is remotely a surprise, it's still such an emotional read for me! 4y
TheAromaofBooks @Buechersuechtling - I'm not a big fan of war books on the whole either, and honestly would be intrigued to hear how someone from Germany (that's where you are??) would feel about this story. Although I will say that throughout her story Montgomery tends to emphasize what they are fighting for more than what they are fighting against, if that makes sense. 4y
TheAromaofBooks @LitStephanie - Thank you!!! I got all carried away for this one! 😂 4y
TheAromaofBooks @Andrew65 - The whole series is definitely worthwhile to read, but I think you could read this one on its own as well. 4y
Andrew65 @TheAromaofBooks Think I have only read one. 4y

#WeeklyForecast - Finally finished Entwined and am on to what may be my favorite book in the Anne series. Still plugging away with November's buddy reads. Several of my upcoming books are due at the library and need to be read in the next two weeks, so they are on the priority list!! Still hoping to complete five books by next Sunday for #NovelNovember but we will see how work unwinds this week!!

Although this is not my favorite of the series, I felt it left things in a good place. I miss the earlier books where Anne is the focus, but Rilla is my favorite out of the children, so I'm happy to end with her story.

This was a fantastic end to the series. It was interesting to see WWI from a Canadian perspective and how those left at home contributed while the men were fighting.

Thanks @thegirlwiththelibrarybag and @Flingogal for organizing the #heycarrots challenge. It was good to revisit one of my favorite books series. Might need to do it every year 😊

Flingogal Great work for getting through the whole series! Glad you enjoyed going through them 🥰 4y

I think this was my favourite of the Anne novels after the original Anne of Green Gables.
It was neat to read about WWI from the perspective of the family in Canada and a young woman coming of age while brothers and friends fight overseas. The characters were charming and the story felt real.
It made me a bit emotional at times, and proud to think of the Canadian forces & of my family who fought in the wars 🇨🇦

Revenge4bess I‘ve had many book hangovers. The most recent one came after I read Longbourn by Jo Baker. It probably lasted seven days. Too hard to keep all the plot lines together. 4y
Revenge4bess The most villainous character I‘ve ever read is Professor Snape from Harry Potter, Mrs. Minchin from The Little Princess, Nellie Olsen from Little House on the Prairie, et al. 4y
Revenge4bess I prefer a series(unless I don‘t like the author). I tried to read Dune; couldn‘t. Never read anything by that author again. On the other hand, I‘ve read the Percy Jackson books and thoroughly enjoyed them. So it really depends. 4y

Book eight in the Anne of Green Gables series and the last few books I haven't enjoyed so much but this one turned it around for me.
My full review can be found here:

bookishkai My favorite after Anne of the Island. 6y
DarcysMom I am reading this right now for the #192019challenge. I am really enjoying it. 6y
Michellesibs @bookishkris I'd agree that this is my second favourite too, although Green Gables was my absolute favourite 6y
Michellesibs @DarcysMom that's a real coincidence as this isn't such a popular book, happy reading! 6y

Today‘s focus is sorting which culled books are being traded for credit and which will be donated. I have two LibraryThing catalogs, one where I‘ve added all of the books I‘ve removed from my library over three purges, and the main one that I will hopefully have cleaned up and up to date by the time I‘m fully unpacked and stuff is on shelves. #CueCat is on the job!

This book was a satisfying end to the series, but Rilla is just not as engaging for me as Anne was at that age. I did enjoy seeing her mature, and I love Walter, and Dog Monday made me sob. I will miss Anne after my return to rereading the books after so many years, but this concluding volume did offer me some closure.

GypsyKat I love this series. ❤️ 6y

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️: Rilla-my-Rilla!! Can it be? My very favorite of the Anne books so far! This one had s but of everything I want in a book. Enter WW1 and the time takes a somber turn in the series. Couldn‘t get enough of this one, and Dog Monday stole all my tears. (Well, almost!)
