The House on Cold Hill
The House on Cold Hill | Peter James
26 posts | 29 read | 28 to read
They said the dead can't hurt you . . . They were wrong. The House on Cold Hill is a chilling and suspenseful ghost story from the multi-million copy bestselling author of Dead Simple, Peter James. Moving from the heart of Brighton and Hove to the Sussex countryside is a big undertaking for Ollie and Caro Harcourt and their twelve-year-old daughter Jade. But when they view Cold Hill House - a huge, dilapidated Georgian mansion - Ollie is filled with excitement. Despite the financial strain of the move, he has dreamed of living in the country since he was a child, and he sees Cold Hill House as a paradise for his animal-loving daughter, the perfect base for his web-design business and a terrific long-term investment. Caro is less certain, and Jade is grumpy about being separated from her friends. Within days of moving in, it becomes apparent that the Harcourt family aren't the only residents of the house. A friend of Jade's is the first to see the spectral woman, standing behind her as the girls talk on FaceTime. Then there are more sightings, as well as increasingly disturbing occurrences in the house. As the haunting becomes more malevolent and the house itself begins to turn on the Harcourts, the terrified family discover Cold Hill House's dark history, and the horrible truth of what it could mean for them . . .

Judging by the mixed reviews I wasn't sure what to expect with this one, but I ended up being quite spooked by it in parts. I thought the plot was nicely done - no gore but with some chills. The part where Ollie lets in a visitor who disappears when his back is turned & he then sees the same visitor just arriving & they proceed to have the same exact conversation made me shiver. 4🌟

(Continued in comments)

OutsmartYourShelf I did have to smile at the E-literate ghosts who could use the internet, send emails, & use modern vernacular though. Also Ollie was a little dense at times in wanting to keep pretending everything was fine - their lives were burning down around them & Ollie was all “It's fine, it's fine. There's no such things as ghosts“. 2y
OutsmartYourShelf There are several unanswered questions I had about this first book so I am moving onto book 2 & hoping that it will answer some of them. 2y
FlowerFairy Greatly enjoyed both books! 2y

This was a good series to read, I completely devoured it. Although it does drag on, with hard to follow areas, there's an allure to this #duology that gets you to keep #reading. Seen through the perspectives of different families over the course of the years in order to show all the tragedies.
However, it didn't have the thrill factor I was after, the goosebumps from a ghost story, with unimaginable creatures in the night.
Is this horror? No.

Good enough creep factor for me, but I don't read a lot of "horror". People who read a lot of horror may roll their eyes a bit. I like that it's not gory. I liked the characters. The twists and turns were pretty predictable but still enjoyable. Entertaining enough.Yes i am downloading book 2. ?A small family moves into an old house with a dark past. Strange, dangerous things start happening and they have a decision to make. Stay or go? ???

I love haunted house books and this one may be my new fave! Ollie, his wife and their daughter move into a dilapidated manor house in the English countryside with plans to renovate the house and make it their dream home. But from the moment they arrive, they find something very off about the house. #caturday

This was pretty good. Lots of scary action. The main character, Ollie, gets annoying with his constant denial of what‘s happening and determined announcements that “everything is fine” when everything is clearly not! His excuses become such a reach that it‘s ridiculous. Also, the constant references to his two website customers is confusing, since they ultimately have nothing to do with what‘s going on. Spooky, though!

Staying with Peter James for my next read. Was very taken with his interview on radio 2, seems like an interesting charasmatic guy! Really enjoyed Absolute Proof which I finished this morning.

Not read this but do know that people whose opinion I trust implicitly say it is one of the best haunted books out there. I do love the author, especially his Roy Grace series (a real favourite). Perhaps I am being a scaredy cat not reading this. 😳😂😔

Loads of books on my TBR for Thrillers, but chosen a horror TBR which I have seen rave reviews for from people whose opinions I normally agree with. Read all his Detective Roy Grace series and loved them but not read this one. #MarchMadness #YourTBRThrillersHorror

somebooksaround love scary thrillers! So good 🙌 7y
ephemeralwaltz I have read this one, you'll enjoy it! He's actually writing the sequel to this right now. 7y
Andrew65 @ephemeralwaltz Thanks for this information, will bump it up my TBR. I had heard he was working on a follow-up book. 7y

House on Cold Hill | Peter James
Mehso-so

I've read lots of Peter James crime novels and they are always a bit repetitive (he underestimates the readers) but in crime novels at least there are technical details to remember. This ghost story seemed even more repetitive which became pretty annoying. The story was OK although it struck me as quite lazy. James threw lots of cliches at it without explanation of why or how. And the ending seemed very weak to me.

Standard haunted house/ghost story with a little bit of a modern twist. This was a light easy read, I'd recommend it if you're looking for something spooky but not too scary.

This is a quote from Peter James' book The House on Cold Hill. I thought this was going to be a light read, but then he pulls this mind bender out of nowhere. Way to keep me on my toes Pete!

I love a good, creepy ghost story. This is exactly what I like...a story that uses dread, sinks it's cold fingers into you, and has you jumping at shadows. It's a finely-crafted haunted house book.

Let me just say 😱😱😱😱 this book terrified me and I'm a horror movie fan at that 😳. Probably because I mostly read it at night in the house on my own but hey that makes the story truly come to life right? Well I recommend this book to you if you want a good scare, an easy read and a story with a twist 📚. Go ahead I dare you 😏.
