The Storyteller
The Storyteller | Jodi Picoult
Some stories live forever . . . Sage Singer is a baker. She works through the night, preparing the days breads and pastries, trying to escape a reality of loneliness, bad memories, and the shadow of her mothers death. When Josef Weber, an elderly man in Sages grief support group, begins stopping by the bakery, they strike up an unlikely friendship. Despite their differences, they see in each other the hidden scars that others cant, and they become companions. Everything changes on the day that Josef confesses a long-buried and shameful secretone that nobody else in town would ever suspectand asks Sage for an extraordinary favor. If she says yes, she faces not only moral repercussions, but potentially legal ones as well. With her own identity suddenly challenged, and the integrity of the closest friend shes ever had clouded, Sage begins to question the assumptions and expectations shes made about her life and her family. When does a moral choice become a moral imperative? And where does one draw the line between punishment and justice, forgiveness and mercy? In this searingly honest novel, Jodi Picoult gracefully explores the lengths we will go in order to protect our families and to keep the past from dictating the future.

The Storyteller is a perfectly titled book. This beautifully written book actually weaves many stories. I wasn‘t sure what I was in for when I met Sage at a grief group. She‘s an introverted baker who meets Joseph, an elderly widowed man. I quickly became engrossed when the heart of the book tells Sage‘s grandmother‘s story, an Auschwitz survivor. There‘s so much more that follows. This became quite an emotionally powerful read. #MountTBR

I haven't read a Jodi Picoult book in a long time... The Storyteller was very moving, as it weaves through modern day times, the experience of a holocaust survivor and Nazi officer.... Just wow. I just loved it.

I went into this book without knowing anything about it beyond the title and author. But I always think I‘m ready for the moral twist in the closing pages of a Jodi Piccoult book. Why do I think I‘m ready!? I never am - she got me again.

this story had me from the start and kept me till the end. reason being I stayed up till midnight cross stitching and listening to the audible.

It's been a long while since I've posted on her but this book motivated me to restart. Her books never disappoint but this one really had me contemplating the things that happened during the war. We read about history but don't always get the thoughts on those who suffered on both sides, both then and in the future.
I got so many good quotes from this one!

I think I‘m done with Picoult‘s Moral Dilemma books but I still really enjoyed this. A geriatric Nazi asks the granddaughter of a Holocaust survivor to help him die. The flashback chapters were brilliant and it has a cracking ending, a solid 4 star read.

#weeklyforecast @Cinfhen

This is going to be a very busy week, as the annual dance festival I produce starts Friday! 😬.
So I‘d be satisfied with finishing the two I‘m currently reading, and maybe get a start on these short ones to finish up the month.

The crazy tile in the background was in the movie theater bathroom I went to yesterday. It was almost overwhelmingly psychedelic!

TheAromaofBooks A dance festival?? That sounds intriguing. Is it just a one-day thing, or does it last for several? 4y
Soubhiville @TheAromaofBooks it‘s 3 days. Www.Migrationsaustin.com. It‘s mostly Bellydance, with a bunch of world dance and fusion. We have 20+ teachers this year and 3 shows. 😊💃🏻 4y

@CoffeeAndABook was right. It‘s a book that resonates – if you get over the first bumpy hour. Yet, I‘m also having some issues with it. The story Minka writes feels completely unnecessary and forced to me. 🤷🏽‍♀️ And although the story of her life makes me feel sick 🤢 (I‘m German), it‘s the twist in the end that I will chew on for a while – _because_ the book helped me to develop a clear opinion on the fundamental plot before that revelation.

CoffeeAndABook I‘m so glad you gave this book another shot and thought it was worth it!!! It really stood out for me. I have one question for you: What‘s / who‘s _because_the books? 4y
Buechersuechtling @CoffeeAndABook 🙈 Oh boy‼️ I‘m sorry for this confusion. As far as I understand you, you understand the meaning of the sentence but not the underscores _ I‘m using – right❓🤔 In the back of my mind capital letters in a conversation on the internet (still) mean that I‘m yelling at someone, so I decided to use underscores to emphasise something as long as Litsy doesn‘t offer writing words in bold style. 4y
CoffeeAndABook Thank you so much for clearing that up!! Yes it was the underscores that confused me. They led me to think _because_the book is a Litsy handle 😂 But of course now it all makes perfect sense. 😅 Have a cozy bookish Sunday evening 🔥 4y

Meanwhile I like it better because I know more of the fundamental plotline and think Jodi Picoult chose an immensely interesting topic. 😄 (I didn‘t know there is an extra department for this in U.S. Justice Administration.)

But I still get confused with the sub-plot: The story that Saige‘s grandma wrote in her notebook. I know what it‘s supposed to be but for me it‘s not well made, I still always confuse the characters that appear in there.

Ha‼️ Unbelievable but if you search under the correct original book title, you find what you are looking for. 😇

I was talking about this book with @CoffeeAndABook ‼️😅

By now I am already 4 hours in but in the beginning I still could re-feel the reservations I had when trying to listen to it for the first time.

If I could only recall with who I talked about this book during the last weeks. She or he wrote a review that made me consider giving this it another try. So, if we talked about this book and you read my feed, give me a shout. 🙋🏽‍♀️

I still am not familiar with Saige‘s voice and I already had one time jump that confused me but I‘m only in one hour. I feel this could be one of the books you listen to in as few settings as possible.

Soubhiville Have you read all of Jodi‘s books? I love My Sister‘s Keeper, it‘s my fave of hers. I also love Chris Bohjalian‘s books, he has a similar feel. Midwives and Before You Know Kindness are two I love, but really anything by either. You could always reread Evelyn or Daisy Jones 😊. Oh, have you read City of Girls yet? 4y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @Soubhiville I‘ve read all of Jodi‘s, I have some of Chris‘s, and I do have City Of Girls!! Where do you get your audible books? When I look for them, they just seem so expensive!! 4y
Soubhiville I use my library. I used to have audible, but I can get plenty free through the library, so that‘s what I do now. Just go on your library‘s website, most use Libby or Hoopla, mine has both. And they are free aps, super easy to use. 🤗💕 4y
Soubhiville You‘ll love City of Girls. If you haven‘t read that yet I say give that a try. I bet it‘ll pull you out of your slump. 4y

Whoa what a riveting book!!
I picked it up at a used bookstore a few days ago & have hardly come up for air! Have been reading any chance I got.

It‘s very hard to read in parts but the storyline and moral dilemma that‘s presented are so compelling.
And I love the quirky side character Mary, the ex-nun with the Harley 👩🏻‍🎤
