You'll Grow Out of It
You'll Grow Out of It | Jessi Klein
YOU'LL GROW OUT OF IT hilariously, and candidly, explores the journey of the twenty-first century woman. As both a tomboy and a late bloomer, comedian Jessi Klein grew up feeling more like an outsider than a participant in the rites of modern femininity. In YOU'LL GROW OUT OF IT, Klein offers-through an incisive collection of real-life stories-a relentlessly funny yet poignant take on a variety of topics she has experienced along her strange journey to womanhood and beyond. These include her "transformation from Pippi Longstocking-esque tomboy to are-you-a-lesbian-or-what tom man," attempting to find watchable porn, and identifying the difference between being called "ma'am" and "miss" ("Miss sounds like you weigh ninety-nine pounds"). Raw, relatable, and consistently hilarious, YOU'LL GROW OUT OF IT is a one-of-a-kind book by a singular and irresistible comic voice.

Two books finished for #BookSpinBingo! You‘ll Grow Out Of It was amazing, and I loved it from start to finish! I originally picked it up simply for the adorable cover, and I am so glad I did. Jessie Klein writes about her love of comedy, her past and current relationships, and her journey through infertility. I adored it. ♥️

This book had me LAUGHING OUT LOUD, it‘s probably the funniest book I‘ve ever read, also one of the most clever and relatable. Jessi Klein writes about the pressures of being a woman and talks honestly about not feeling like you‘re enough—not confident enough, not beautiful enough, not brave enough, but she does it with humor and levity. Recommend!

I really enjoyed this book. Jessi Klein talks about transforming from a tomboy to a woman in a very relatable voice. She‘s funny and self-deprecating. She is someone you‘d want to be friends with. During this time of self-isolation, I felt like I was spending time with a friend. Highly recommended.

Hi Litsy 👋🏻 Sorry for being bad at posting. Since I‘ve been here last, I got a new full time job as a YA librarian! So far it‘s been fun but really busy and challenging. I haven‘t had so much time to read, but I‘m still going strong with audiobooks during my commute - here‘s what I‘m reading now!

I was flailing for awhile this month, choosing an audiobook - starting and casting aside several that just weren‘t doing it for me. I‘m SO GLAD Anne Jones mentioned You‘ll Grow Out of It on a recent episode of her From the Front Porch podcast! Indeed, this was HILARIOUS and made me guffaw repeatedly. ‘Ma‘am‘ was probably my favorite chapter- highly recommend 👍👍

This was disappointing. From everything about it it seemed it was going to be about a woman finding humor in being a non-traditional feminine woman. Instead it's about a woman who desperately wants to be the traditional idea of femininity. So for me, who says fuck you to gender norms, this was almost painful to read. Except from a technical standpoint it's really well written and not painful to read.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I was unfamiliar with comedy writer and stand up comedian Jessi Klein prior to this, but I grabbed it on a friend‘s recommendation. Humorous personal stories are an audio dream. Klein amuses with essays about female expectations (both general and specific), her comedy career, and fertility struggles. My favorite essay was “Get the Epidural.” I wish I hadn‘t waited until hour 11 for mine. This collection was just what I needed. 👇🏻

britt_brooke By the way: I‘m so over reviews stating that an author is oblivious to her/his privilege as if it is something that has to be blatantly addressed. Everyone deserves to tell their story. Good freaking grief. 6y

About midbook i abandoned ship. I know I will finish it, but perhaps an essay a day. I'm sitting here listening to this author complain about things she's blessed to have. I don't think she sees it as such. It's just life...a very privileged one. The cover of the book is cool though (the lipstick)

Maybe because our life experiences have been so different, but this collection of essays made me feel sorry for Jessi Klein. She came across to me as judgemental (of herself and others) and unhappy. While she was brutally honest in this book she didn't need to be. For example, I can't help but think her son will not ever want to know she masturbated to porn while pregnant with him. But, what do I know? To each her own.

This memoir/essay collection by comedy writer and comedian Jessi Klein really didn‘t work for me. While funny in places, I really couldn‘t relate to her. She comes across as not knowing herself terribly well and finds substance use funny in a way it isn‘t. There are some good spots, or this would have been a pan.

I had never heard of Jessi Klein before so I went into this with no expectations, which was probably best. Apparently she‘s a stand up comedian, so one would think this would be really funny, but I only found it mildly amusing. For someone who calls herself a feminist, there‘s a disturbingly staggering amount of gross generalizations about gender, and gender stereotypes. This was superficial and just kind of meh. Not terrible, just not very good.

Went on a 4 mile #audiorun with this book. Super windy but in the 40‘s and sunny. It was so nice to be outside! This book is pretty entertaining so far. 🏃🏻‍♀️🏃🏻‍♀️

Ingerella I love to run with an audiobook. In fact I get stressed if I don't have one ready to go! This morning I started The Good Daughter, by Karin Slaughter. It definitely kept me occupied while I ran today. 7y

I really enjoyed comedienne Jessi Klein‘s sharp, funny essay collection, ranging in topics from wedding dress shopping to baths. I never knew footnotes could be so hilarious. Bonus recommendation: Jessi voices one of the characters on Netflix‘s comedy series Big Mouth, for which the tagline is, “coming of age all over the place.” 😂 It‘s been one of my favorite shows this year.

I happened upon this audiobook by chance. It was available at the library. I needed a new audiobook. I had heard of it a time or two. I found this funny, smart, and at times it made me uncomfortable in a "I can't believe she said that out loud" kinda way. Which is entirely the point.

Finished this fantastic memoir on my #audiorun today. I absolutely loved it and was laughing out loud throughout; such a pleasant surprise as I couldn‘t remember why I even downloaded it. I‘m also happy to be back up to running 3 miles, albeit slowly, after several years of laziness! 😊🏃‍♀️

LectricSheep I‘m just learning how to run! How do you pick good audiobooks to listen to? I‘d love to “read” while jogging, but I‘ve been afraid it‘ll throw me out of what little rhythm I have. 😂 I‘m getting bored of music though! 7y
MrBook Nice!!! 👍🏻 7y
cariashley @LectricSheep when I last ran regularly (7 years ago 😯) I only listened to music, but I wasn‘t an audiobooker then. When I started again a few months ago I‘d just throw on whatever audiobook I was in the middle of, and I‘ve kind of retrained myself to be used to it over music. It‘s a real waste-no-minute-not-reading approach but it‘s working for me, which was surprising! 7y
cariashley @MrBook thank you!! 😁 7y
LectricSheep Awesome! I‘ll have to give it a try. Thanks for the perspective! (edited) 7y

Almost done with Jessi Klein's collection of essays. She's funny, and I've enjoyed listening, but I find her insecurities grating after a while, so I've had to listen in small chunks. Her essay on all women being inherently "wolves" or "poodles" got especially on my nerves. ??‍♀️I'm just not a fan of categorizing people like that.

Ashley_Nicoletto Yesss! How can all women be one of two things? Nope. 🙄 7y

Frequently clever and amusing, occasionally laugh out loud funny, and always painfully honest. Bonus: who knew that -- although I'm not a New York Jew -- Jessi and I had so much in common? I've been a fan since I saw her on The Showbiz Show with David Spade, though I never knew much about where she came from or went afterward. Haven't enjoyed a memoir from a female comedian this much since Bossypants.
