Night Sister
Night Sister | Jennifer McMahon
The latest novel from New York Times bestselling author Jennifer McMahon (The Winter People) is an atmospheric, gripping, and suspenseful tale that probes the bond between sisters and the peril of keeping secrets. The Tower Motel was once a thriving attraction of rural Vermont. Today it lies in disrepair, alive only in the memories of the three women--Amy, Piper, and Piper's kid sister, Margot--who played there as children. They loved exploring the abandoned rooms ... until the day their innocent games uncovered something dark and twisted that ruined their friendship forever. Now, Amy stands accused of committing a horrific crime, and the only hint to her motives is a hasty message that forces Piper and Margot to revisit the motel's past, and the fate of two sisters who lived there in its heyday. Sylvie Slater had dreams of running off to Hollywood and becoming Alfred Hitchcock's leading lady, while her little sister, Rose, was content with their simple life. Each believed the other to be something truly monstrous, but only one knows the secret that will haunt the generations to come.

This book was okay. I enjoyed it and kept me entertained. But there was 3 different timelines and that was confusing at first, trying to keep everyone straight. Also this book was very repetitive. Could have been shortened by taking out the 1000 repeating phrases. 3/5

Between a so-so and a pick. I like the idea behind this one, but it feels a little like McMahon explains the mysteriousness out of the story. Also, Piper and Margot are flat enough characters, I kept forgetting which sister was which. Not entirely sure what the point is of Jason's character at all. Still, it's a satisfyingly eerie story.

I enjoyed this 📖 up until the last 1/3 of the book. The 📚 is about a family with a dark secret that leads two sisters to see one another as monsters - a perception that will lead to tragic consequences for several generations. At the ❤️ of the story is the msg that familial secrets destroy lives. Spoiler in the comments. A positive about this 📕: the author is 🏳️‍🌈 so the mild representation of a sapphic attraction in the 📖 felt authentic.

BookBosomed1 I was hoping the storyline of the “mare” was a metaphor for what happens when families refuse to acknowledge neurodivergence. The literal human-turns-werewolf trope disappointed me immensely. I wanted the book to be a clever, psychological thriller rather than a fantasy thriller. The book felt like the author had difficulty choosing a genre since the ending felt forced and too loose-goosey. Oh, well. 🤷‍♀️ (edited) 3y

This was a good, easy suspense novel, only once did I guess something about the book that turned out to be true. But the whole story is a lot more then my guess. McMahon keeps you guessing and just reading to enjoy.

I'm about 100 pages in, and while I don't dislike it and it is well written, I'm just not compelled to read. This one has such a high Litsy rating! Is it worth sticking it out? Just a slow starter?

MsMelissa I really liked it, but it is one that I could see myself disliking if I hadn‘t been in the right mood. 4y
TheKidUpstairs @Book_Fiend_Melissa i think that might be it. I can see why it's good, I just don't think it's the right read for me right now. 4y

#JustStarted The audiobook I'm listening to is making me want to continue reading something a bit creepy. Hopefully this will do the trick! Creepy/ scary is not something I usually gravitate to. Lord knows The Winter People creeped me tfo, so I'm optimistic.

LiteraryinPA I hear you. At first during the pandemic I didn‘t want to read anything vaguely scary or suspenseful. But the last couple weeks I‘ve gotten back into thrillers, a genre I‘ve often enjoyed. Luckily there are books for every mood! 5y

The second of McMahon‘s books that I‘ve read, and considering I‘ve enjoyed both, I think I need to find more from her.

Just the right amount of creepiness, 3 generations, multiple POVs a mystery that kept me guessing, and an ending that surprised me. I absolutely loved the main setting—an old abandoned roadside motel (with its own little Tower of London) and the family home up the hill from it...hello Psycho vibes.😱

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I found the first half of the book a bit slow, and lost interest at times, but I did pick up most of what was going on. Half way through, the pace picked up, and for the last third, it was more riveting. When I heard the twist at the end, I didn‘t believe that could work from what had already been told in the story, so I thought re-listening (or reading) would be helpful to figuring it out, but ultimately, I think things did all get explained.

Enjoyable read...even if the focus was on ghosts, lore and murder. Story is just okay but not great. Though since I have a problem with the whole “suspension of disbelief” concept, this resulted in my inability to accept much of the premise. However, my review is by no stretch representative of all who‘ve read it. 3/5⭐️

#MayReads #MayWrapUp
I only read 14 books this month. I really have tried to stop pressuring myself to reach a certain number of books read, and to go back to enjoying books. Not rushing, rushing, rushing. I had some great reads in May!
Also, guilty pleasure alert: I have enjoyed some Netflix series. Currently watching the entirety of Games of Thrones..finished seasons 1-3 these past two weeks. Started on Season 4 yesterday.😥

Tamra I agree, reading should be fun! I am a free range reader. 😆 6y
StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego Game of Thrones will definitely cut into reading time. But 14 is a great number! 💖📚💖 6y

Considering the 3 generation story and switching POV, I'd thought this would be confusing as an #audiobook or in general but it wasn't at all! I loved the eeriness and how, honestly, this kept me guessing and ended up surprising me. I'd spun out a bunch of different, plausible "solutions" and turns out it was the one I least suspected. I'm excited now for The Winter People!

I picked this book out months before I read it and admittedly it sat there for a long time. When I finally picked it back up I was blown away. Went out to dinner with the hubby so I had a bit of distraction from my reading. But, I did get to finish this one and it was really good. There was a lot to it. A lot of creepy and supernatural stuff and wicked twist when you think you‘ve got it all figured out. It ended just right - strong and a bit open. Definitely pick this one up if you‘re in the mood for a good thriller with a paranormal edge. #24b4monday

3 🌟 /5. This was fine. Suspenseful but not scary, which was a bit disappointing. Once I figured out what was going on (fairly early on), the rest of the book became predictable. But I liked the characters and the way the story moved back and forth in time.
