So the great bare-handed mullet grab wasn‘t a trick. It wasn‘t possible after all.
Guess I‘ll have to come back another day and try again, Roy thought. That‘s what a real Florida boy would do.

This book is a YA novel about a group of unlikely middle school friends in Florida who work together to save owls from a big, bad corporation. It has a strong environmentalist streak, and the writing tends to portray all the adults as bumbling or corrupt, with just a few redeeming moments. Overall I didn‘t love it, I felt like the story could have been neater. But maybe I would appreciate this more if I read it at a younger age!

SamAnne I didn‘t know Hiaasen wrote YA. That‘s kind of funny. He is a big conservationist. Big advocate of Everglades Protection. 11mo
Erin.Elizabeth10 @SamAnne Yes, that makes a lot of sense! Maybe I should try some of his novels for adults. I would love to visit the Everglades. 11mo
SamAnne @Erin.Elizabeth10 fair warning: hi novels are hilarious but raunchy and over-the-top. And his older ones have language that has not aged well. People with sleazy developers, corrupt cops, hard bitten reporters and detectives. 11mo
Erin.Elizabeth10 @SamAnne okay that fits with this book too! At some moments the language felt dated, even for a kids book. 10mo

It is about several children working to protect a colony of burrowing owls from habitat destruction. A proposed construction site threatens the owls' habitat, as the construction company will destroy their woods to make room for Mother Paula's All-American Pancake House.

I enjoyed this book a lot more this time than when I first read it in 8th grade. My only complaint is that it falls into a common middle-grade-novel trope of most of the adults being either too dumb or too evil to function properly.

I love how Hiaasen MG novels are so similar to his adult novels in tone and character development! A pancake restaurant is being built on a site that has several burrowing owl nests on it. A new kid, a burly soccer player, and her Skink-esque stepbrother take on bullies, developers, incompetent but kind police officers and City Hall in this enjoyable romp!

The Newbery Honor and New York Times bestseller book is a RF that would pair best in the classroom with a LC. In a LC, students will go with Roy to help save owls in a Florida community. https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/collections/17-18/teaching-with-hoot/ the link provided lesson plans that you can use to teach this book in the LC. #ucflae3414sp21

Adodd1 The UDL strategy best fit would be 6.1, guiding students to appropriate goal setting for their reading. The ESOL strategy best fit would be 16, integrating speaking, listening, reading, and writing activities for students, which is what would take place in the LC. 4y
MFlowers Just found this in my old library! I'm excited to try out the link you provided. 4y

Loved it! Started a tad slow, and I wondered whether it‘d just use goofy Florida stereotypes as a shallow backdrop for a plot that could have been set anywhere, but halfway through, I was 100% sold. The author and I clearly share a love of natural Florida, and it‘s heartening to see that in print. 💖 Amusing characters, great messages, cute owls, and I‘ll be reading Hiaasen again for sure. 😁

KathyWheeler When my daughter was in middle school, she hated reading. What we did was I‘d sit at one end of the couch, she‘d sit at the other, and we‘d take turns reading aloud the chapters of her required reading. This was our favorite. What a nice memory. I‘m upset with her right now, but this brought back that sweet memory. Thanks for the post. 😊 (edited) 5y

The Newbery Honor and New York Times Best Selling Book, Hoot would be perfect for a LC. It's a RF book written by Carl Hiaasen. Roy just moved to Florida from Montana. Roy ends up making a friend called Mullet Fingers who constantly tries to delay the construction of a new pancake house on a site that is home to endangered burrowing owls. Can Roy and his new friends stop the construction completely or will this turn into a disaster? #UCFLAE3414F19

JRone ESOL strategy #13 Use preview/review activities would be beneficial for children using this book in a literature circle so they can recall what they read. Using UDL strategy 8.3 Foster collaboration and community aligns with the literature circles because students are meeting together to collaborate and share what they read. 5y
JRone https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/lesson-plans/teaching-content/picturing-stor... is a lesson plan that goes in-depth with the book's details using characters, setting, plot, etc. to “picture the story.“ 5y

Hoot by Carl Hiaasen is a Newbery award winning RF novel and is perfect for a fourth through sixth grade classroom to be used as a LC, IR, or class read SR. The story is based in Florida and includes the themes of bullying, friendships, and environmentalism and could be used to tie into language arts and science classes! I would use UDL strategies 8.3, 7.2, 4.1 and ESOL strategies 4, 10, 19, and 42. #ucflae3414f19

🦉Carl Hiaasen‘s John Newbery Award winning book Hoot is a great RF book for upper elementary to beginning middle school classes. While it can be considered a lengthy book, splitting the chapters up by having students in LC or a class wide SR could make the “load” seem easier. It is based in Florida and the story follows themes of growing up, friendship, bullying, and environmentalism. #LAE3414sp19

ha_kaye This book could be used to introduce concepts of environmental science or endangered species. The UDL strategies that would fit into the reading of Hoot could include 1.1-3, 2.1, 3.1-4, 4.1-2, 7.2, and 8.3. To accommodate ESOL students 4,7,8,9,10,17,19,20,27,29,42,44, and 50 would be great! Having an EL student work in a group setting while doing graphic organizers like story strips would be great for their comprehension! 6y
ha_kaye This lesson would be tie perfectly into the ESOL strategies I thought were important. https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/lesson-plans/teaching-content/picturing-stor... 6y
DrSpalding I like that you mentioned the many themes present in this book. You are correct that these would be exemplified by reading this book aloud or possibly in literature circle groups. Scholastic is a high-quality resource. See previous comments regarding UDL and ESOL. 6y

I loved that this book was set in Florida and the author is from there as well its a fast-paced story a few parts made me laugh and the nature aspect about saving the owls was a really good addition to the story. All the characters were really strong and well rounded, each character had their part to play. This was my first time reading any books by Carl Hiaasen but it won‘t be my last, great story.

This realistic fiction book was the 2003 Newbery honor award, and would be great for IR in the class. The story is about how a newcomer makes some friends and they begin to take a stand against a new construction. A new pancake house is to be built upon the burrows of owls who live there, and they do everything in their power to protect the owls and stop the construction from happening, in both conventional and unconventional ways. #ucflae3414sp18
