In Book One of the Broken Empire, Mark Lawrence brought to life the morbidly gripping* (Publishers Weekly) story of a boy in search of power and vengeance. Now, in King of Thorns, that boys journey into manhood takes him to the dark depths waiting within his soul The boy who would be King has gained the throne... Prince Honorious Jorg Ancrath vowed when he was nine to avenge his slaughtered mother and brotherand punish his father for not doing so. When he was fifteen, he began to fulfill that vow. Now he is eighteenand he must hold on by strength of arms to what he took by torture and treachery. King Jorg is a man haunted: by the ghost of a young boy, by a mysterious copper box, by his desire for the woman who rides with his enemy. Plagued by nightmares of the atrocities he committed, and of the atrocities committed against him when he was a child, he is filled with rage. And even as his need for revenge continues to consume him, twenty thousand men march toward the gates of his castle. His enemy is far stronger than him. Jorg knows that he cannot win a fair fight. But he has found, in a chamber hidden beneath the castle, ancient and long-lost artifacts. Some might call them magic. Jorg is not certainall he knows is that the secrets they hold can be put to terrible use in the coming battle...

This was my choice for #TurnUptheBooks, but I've still decided to DNF it. I've already had my problems with volume one, but thought I'd give the second book a shot, too. Then it spent years on my TBR... Now I know why. So I kicked it off my list, volume three as well, and another book the same author as well. TBR cleaned out. I just couldn't get into the story at all, and felt bored from the start...

I wanted to do both books for the #Roll100 this month, but Wifey sabotaged that plan by gifting me some real big books - so still only one book in March 😅

For #TurnUptheBooks I got the song Thrine by Bring Me The Horizon. After a night thinking about something else than werewolves, I came along the tagged book (actually, while checking for the #Roll100 book). It was so fitting, I almost couldn't believe it.

PuddleJumper Being Me The Horizon! Wow. I need to go listen to them again, haven't heard that name since uni 2y
Jari-chan @PuddleJumper Cool, you know them! Do you have a favourite song? 2y
PuddleJumper @Jari-chan Been ages since I've listened to them. Looks like I mostly listened to the That's The Spirit album. I'll have to add them into my Spotify rotation again 2y
Jari-chan @PuddleJumper I'm so going to check this out - Thank you 😊 2y

I just finished Prince of Thorns last night and thinking I should pick another less darker book.
But this morning, I decided why not try read the first line, and this first page blows my mind. Beautiful and daunting. So, King of Thorns it is.

phantomx Now I should definitely dive back into The Broken Empire series 4y
Weisubei We could be buddy read if you want 😂 4y
Weisubei I really need to cross off this series from my shelf 4y

Mehso-so

Beautiful and disgusting Grimdark gems of Necromancy and a truly vile main POV character, unfortunately weighed down by a very random and incohesive narration presentation and lackluster side characters. At times a very marvelous book, at other times came close to DNFing.

Leave me some comments let me know what you think ❤️

Lesanne I agree! My enthusiasm for the series definitely waned with this entry. 4y
RobStark92 @Lesanne yeah I was surprised I was hoping it would improve as a series should when you progress through. Part three might redeem it though, we‘ll find out in a couple of weeks after I let this settle 😂 4y
TrishB Disagree on some points and definitely didn‘t want to not finish it. I think it suffered from middle book syndrome with a bit of rambling but it left me wanting to see how it finished. Lets see what you think of the last one. 4y
See All 21 Comments
RobStark92 @TrishB middlebook syndrome was the phrase I was trying to remember lol 😂😂😂 I‘ll keep you posted like I said part three can redeem it all and part one was really good even :) 4y
TrishB It‘s a love or hate ending in part three 😁 4y
MsMelissa I‘m struggling with this one right now. I‘m about 100 pages in and really don‘t like it. I‘m considering bailing. @TrishB 4y
TrishB @Book_Fiend_Melissa aw that‘s a shame, but if you‘re not enjoying it. 4y
MsMelissa @TrishB I‘m going to read some more tonight and see how it goes. I found the first part really confusing with the going back and forth in time. If that stops, and the story stays on present timeline I might be alright. 4y
RobStark92 @Book_Fiend_Melissa I recommend sticking it out because it has some really incredible Grimdark gems scattered throughout and they are worth going the distance for. If you do DNF it definitely get a spoiler synopsis, cause there‘s some good stuff in it. If you shelf it though, I understand why 😇 4y
MsMelissa @RobStark92 @TrishB Alright, alright I‘ll keep going 😂 Besides, I already own the third book so it would be a shame if I stopped now. 4y
Lucy_Anywhere Finished this yesterday! I agree - it was quite uneven and there were some bits where the story got bogged down. But i liked seeing how Jorg matures and there were some bits that hit me in the feels. So overall a pick for me! 4y
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm Awww, that‘s too bad. 😞 Hmm...might still check the book out, but probably only after I‘ve run out of other grimdark material choices. 😅 4y
Jovy Aww, sorry this was just a so-so for you! I personally did not feel the book was tedious to read. Let‘s see what we think of book 3. Also, Mistborn‘s another great series to tackle! 👍🏻 4y
Pumpkinandegg313 That is a shame... I found this book to be quite a laugh full of dark humour... But not everyone likes everything lol. Hope you find a great next book 😊 4y
RobStark92 @Pumpkinandegg313 it‘s not that I didn‘t like it, I liked it in general but INCREDIBLY disliked many parts of it, and the parts that I enjoyed were absolutely incredible. I‘m glad I stuck it out, no regrets here 4y
RobStark92 @MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm it‘s worth your time just be prepared and pack a lunch for it 😂 I‘m still glad I read it don‘t get me wrong, some of it was quite brilliant to be honest!! 4y
RobStark92 @MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm for Grimdark, have you read The Poppy zwar? 4y
RobStark92 @Lucy_Anywhere it came close to a pick for me because so much of it was BLOODY BRILLIANT, but it was very weighed down so it hit the middle. I‘ll still read the third. Also, I‘m interested in Jorg maturing. I‘m ready to see if we get a full blown corruption or redemption in book three!! 4y
RobStark92 @Jovy I‘ll keep you posted on book three, I‘m taking a break from this but I will definitely finish the series!! I‘m excited. Oh, and the prologue for Mistborn got me hooked. The first sentence will be an iconic one in 50 years when people study fantasy !‘ 4y
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm I haven‘t. Is it high on your recommendation list? 4y
RobStark92 @MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm yes it Chinese history based Grimdark it starts off rocky but gets WILD, the finale comes out in November I highly recommend it. The magic system involves substance abuse and the Chinese pantheon 4y

Middle books are always tricky, and King of Thorns didn‘t always hit the spot. There are two stories here and one worked better for me than the other. Jorg is still a fascinating character- he grows up a bit here and has something to lose but he is still as ruthless and bloody as ever. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

phantomx Nice review! Now I'm am super hyped to get back to this series. There are times when the books in the Broken Empire series seems to slow down tremendously and then pick up quickly in a snap. Jorg is quite interesting, I always think of him as a behemoth when Mark Lawrence describes his height. 4y
Lucy_Anywhere @phantomx thanks! I‘m debating whether to go straight on to Emperor of Thorns, or have a quick non-fantasy read in between... Jorg is a fascinating character! Like, he‘s an awful person but I‘m rooting for him all the way. 4y
twohectobooks Dumb question, but how is “Jorg” pronounced? 4y
See All 12 Comments
Lucy_Anywhere @twohectobooks Not sure, but I pronounce it ‘George‘ in my head 4y
phantomx @Lucy_Anywhere I feel the same way about Jorg, he's awful, but rooting for him. 4y
phantomx @twohectobooks @Lucy_Anywhere It took me awhile to find out how to pronounce Jorg. You say as you see it. Mark Lawrence originally wanted it to George. 4y
MsMelissa I bailed. Just couldn‘t do it. What worked in the first book for me didn‘t work here. 4y
Lucy_Anywhere @Book_Fiend_Melissa Fair enough! Life‘s too short to read books that aren‘t working for you. Have you tried Joe Abercrombie? He writes great grimdark 4y
MsMelissa I have a few of his books but haven‘t read them yet. I think one is Half A Sea? The other two also start series/trilogies but I can‘t think of their titles. (edited) 4y
MsMelissa Ok, one must be The Blade Itself (the books are upstairs and I‘m too lazy to get up and check 😂 I‘m starting to think maybe Grimdark isn‘t for me. 4y
Lucy_Anywhere @Book_Fiend_Melissa 😂 I love it but I get why it doesn‘t work for everyone!Half a King is more YA so a quicker read than The Blade Itself which is a bit of a chunkster 4y
twohectobooks @phantomx @lucy_anywhere interesting! My brain went straight to “Yorg”, with a German J and a hard G. Which is a bit weird because I don‘t speak or read German. Guess I‘ve been watching too much German tv on Netflix haha. (edited) 4y

Also, loving this app everybody is so upbeat and friendly !! Positive vibes from everyone y‘all are awesome !!

Lucy_Anywhere I‘m reading this now! Have you read the Red Queen trilogy? Set in the same world, but different story. And a lot more humour 4y
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm I LOVE the positivity here! I‘ve essentially stopped using FB because I just can‘t take it anymore and I‘m so grateful there‘s a social media outlet I can still come to and connect with the world. Looking forward to your video! 👍 4y
RobStark92 @Lucy_Anywhere I have not. I‘m open to it though, I think when I finish the broken empire trilogy I might read book of the ancestor sometime down the road. For me it just depends on how this trilogy ends. Because I have incredibly mixed feelings about the second book. 4y

Book two of The Broken Empire does not disappoint! Jorg is still ruthless but more mature, introspective. There‘s a mix of grit and gore with wit and tenderness which is fast making Lawrence a favorite of mine. Great, great writing. Coddin sums up best how I feel about Jorg — “I love you for no good reason, Jorg. You are a vicious bastard at the best of times... but I do love thee well” ⚔️⚔️⚔️⚔️⚔️

TrishB Love this series ❤️ 4y
Jovy @trishb I can see why! I think it will be one of my faves ❤️ 4y

That ending oh my gosh!!! I was not expecting that betrayal, I wasn‘t expecting the battle to go down like that. Oh my gosh. So I love that Jorg is growing in terms of how he feels towards others, he is realizing that people might actual mean something to him and I like that. I enjoyed his interactions with Gog. And I swear on everything if something happens to Makin I will rage, I love that man. #fantasy

Started King of Thorns and while Jorg is older now he is still just as evil but he seems to think his evil ways through a lot clearer now, he isn‘t so quick to kill. I like seeing that growth but I love that he is still willing to kill, it‘s still dark and gory just how I like it haha.

Lucy_Anywhere This has been on my TBR for so long. I read the Price of Fools trilogy, and loved it 5y

King of Thorns | Mark Lawrence

A man is made of memories. It is all we are. Captured moments, the smell of a place, scenes played out time and again on a small stage. We are memories, strung on storylines—the tales we tell ourselves about ourselves, falling through our lives into tomorrow.
