A love letter to queerness, self-expression, and individuality (also Madonna) that never shies away from the ever-present fear within the queer community of late '80s New York, Like a Love Story made me feel so fullof hope, love, courage, pride, and awe for the many people who fought for love and self-expression in the face of discrimination, cruelty, and death. "A book for warriors, divas, artists, queens, individuals, activists, trend setters, and anyone searching for the courage to be themselves.Mackenzi Lee, New York Times bestselling author of The Gentlemans Guide to Vice and Virtue Its 1989 in New York City, and for three teens, the world is changing. Reza is an Iranian boy who has just moved to the city with his mother to live with his stepfather and stepbrother. Hes terrified that someone will guess the truth he can barely acknowledge about himself. Reza knows hes gay, but all he knows of gay life are the medias images of men dying of AIDS. Judy is an aspiring fashion designer who worships her uncle Stephen, a gay man with AIDS who devotes his time to activism as a member of ACT UP. Judy has never imagined finding romance...until she falls for Reza and they start dating. Art is Judys best friend, their schools only out and proud teen. Hell never be who his conservative parents want him to be, so he rebels by documenting the AIDS crisis through his photographs. As Reza and Art grow closer, Reza struggles to find a way out of his deception that wont break Judys heartand destroy the most meaningful friendship hes ever known. This is a bighearted, sprawling epic about friendship and love and the revolutionary act of living life to the fullest in the face of impossible odds.

I‘m actually bummed how indifferent I feel about this one. It‘s an exceptionally important story to tell and for that I‘m very glad it exists, but it ultimately feels repetitive, forgiving of characters that shouldn‘t be forgiven, overly preachy, and more. I‘m thrilled to see a book where young queer kids find their way in the world, I just wish it had been more polished.

Sadly didn‘t live up to hype/expectations. I super appreciate a story about young queer ppl, & giving teens today an insight into what life was like in the earlier days of AIDS. But there were more cons than pros: overly long & repetitive, instalove & irrational instahate, characters w/little depth (& an example of a man not knowing how to write a teen girl, IMO), too heavy-handed at times. An important book, just wish it was more polished. 2/5 ⭐️

Sigh. I don‘t know if he gets corrected on this at some point later, but it annoys me when people think every place in the central Bay Area is part of San Francisco. Berkeley is a completely separate city, across the bay. There‘s not even a shared border! Why couldn‘t it say “near the city...”? Humph. The author lives in Los Angeles and I know there‘s a lot of weird overlapping down there, but not up here.

Caterina Haha I just moved to Berkeley for seminary, and before I came I was like "I'll be so close to San Francisco!" and now that I've headed in once, I'm like "ohhhh." ? But Berkeley is pretty cool in its own right! 4mo
alisonrose @Caterina Haha, well, it IS close! But close is different than “actually located within”. Berkeley is a great little city though! 4mo

And I wish she knew that her ability to even utter all these doubts out loud means she thinks highly enough of herself to respect the emotions inside her.

I wonder if he‘s also thinking about that time he told me that Cher‘s voice is like a foghorn, calling all the queens to her shores and warning them of the many navigational hazards ahead.

[This line gave me an amazing image in my mind‘s eye!!]

All the feels with this one! An LGBT love triangle that takes place in 1989-90. I‘m so glad it‘s being adapted for film

I truly loved Like a Love Story, by Abdi Nazemian, a moving, big-hearted, literally rainbow-filled story about an Iranian American teen figuring out who he is, who he loves, and how to love himself in New York City at the height of the AIDS crisis. 🌈

I love this book! It‘s a beautiful story and oh so perfect for #pridemonth. And who knew the day would soon come when Madonna (yes, the Michigan-born girl) would be so appropriately woven into a story that is not ‘their‘ story but everyone‘s story.

BooknerdsLife I have this book on my TBR! Hope my library will get it 🤞🏼 6mo
marleed @BooknerdsLife I made an online library request for the purchase and they obliged. So far in 2019, the library has purchased 7 of my 9 requests! 6mo
BooknerdsLife @marleed Wow! That‘s awesome! 👍🏼💖 Dies your library request you to pay a sum for those books purchased too? I‘d love to put in my request too but the librarian told me I‘ll be requested to pay around $3.5 for each book if they have decided to order it for me ...it‘s not much but I just feel uneasy about it... 6mo

BooknerdsLife @marleed but I think I will do that for this book 🤗 6mo
marleed @BooknerdsLife No cost to me at all, I‘m able to make one request per day, but I‘ve only made 9 requests so far. I don‘t understand the justification for the $3.5 fee! I would think the library would oblige and be interested in patron requests if funds permit. 6mo
BooknerdsLife @marleed TBH Me neither! And I feel a little uneasy ...but the way she explained was I would get the priority to read the book once they have purchased as my request, and the fee is same as reserve fee 😑 That‘s so awesome you can request one per day! 😱😍 6mo

I finished this book an hour ago and I still can't put into words how powerful this book was. This book takes place in New York during the AIDS crisis. Art, Judy and Reza are all teens trying to let their voices be heard. They become activists who just want everyone to have equal rights. This book broke my heart in so many ways but also gave me so much hope. I am so glad that I read this book during Pride month. Must read in my book!!!!

LibrarianJen I‘ve been wanting to read this so bad! I just have to many others on my plate at the moment. 6mo

Truly excellent. Sad and hopeful and full of rage. I‘ve read some excellent queer YA this spring, and this is another one to add to the list. A must read for anyone queer and anyone who loves us.

Oh man, this book is killing me! It‘s a little bit reminiscent of David Levithan‘s Two Boys Kissing (which if you haven‘t read you should go get a copy and read it now). These are but just two of a number of screenshots I‘ve taken because the writing is so beautiful.
