khooliha I tried rereading Dodger a couple years ago for Pratchat and I just found how people responded to Dodger too repetitive. Just not a fav! 2y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa I enjoyed it 🤷‍♀️ A mix of fictional characters and cameos by some real life historical figures… while still highlighting the nature of poverty at that time in London. Maybe it helped that I listened on audiobook? (edited) 2y

julesG @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I agree, the audiobook kept me going. 2y
Soubhiville I read this one years ago and enjoyed it very much. I did audio too. 2y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @julesG & @Soubhiville The audiobook was well done 😉 2y
BookmarkTavern This one felt very similar to Nation for me. Intrepid young man, girl in distress who is more capable than she seems at first, interfering adults who aren‘t nearly as helpful as they think. And I totally agree on the audiobook! Well worth the listen! 2y

In Victorian England, a young man named Dodger makes his livelihood by trawling through the sewers for lost change & valuables. Everything changes for him when he rescues a young woman fleeing an abusive marriage.

This was a fascinating book & felt very similar to Nation, although dealing with class and ethics instead of colonialism. The world felt rich, the characters were interesting, & the social commentary was as on point as usual. 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑

I really enjoyed this mash up of Dickens‘s fictional Dodger character and the history of London with the real Charles Dickens & Mayhew authors and their studies of the London poor, the Sweeney Todd tale, and other memorable historical figures like Ada Lovelace and Babbage, etc making nod & wink appearances. A fun Pratchett adventure, with lots of great nods to real history.

tokorowilliamwallace Can't promise I'll get to it (as I haven't even started on my last reservation made and picked up, an author I've been wanting to try out for a while to get a greater taste of the varieties of fantasy), but I just reserved it from the library. 2y

Thanks to the #Scarathlon2020 I got to read 38 books this month. 8 of them were audio books, but only 5 were from my TBR. That's due to the challenge month - I tried to focus on books that would bring points to #TeamSlaughter

Now it's time for a new reading month! ❤

Another Non-Discworld book by Terry Pratchett. I did not get along all to well with Dodger, but it's nice how Pratchett shows us the life in London during the Victorian Era. And of course I liked Charlie 😉

This reimagining of the teenage Jack Dawkins/Artful Dodger as, for the most part, the hero (hero-adjacent?) includes characters Sweeney Todd, writer Charles Dickens, and politician Benjamin Disraeli.

It was an OK read. I didn't have any strong feelings about it one way or the other. The humor is its saving grace.

This is not a Discworld novel. This is a book about Victorian London & a tribute to Charles Dickens with a nod to the Baker Street Irregulars. Not being a traditional “Prachett” book as the setting, language, & lack of magic are not one would expect, I still found it charming & a fun contrast to his Discworld books. And this in despite that I loathe Dickens.

The narrator, Stephen Briggs, was fabulous.

Book 4 for #SuperSeptember 🎉

Andrew65 Sounds good 👏👏👏 4y
Bkwrm7 Have you listened to Nation by Pratchett? It's another non-Discworld one. I liked Dodger. But I loooooved Nation. It's also narrated excellently by Briggs, I believe. (edited) 4y

I'm on session 2 of listening to Dodger and I think my issues are these:
1) I don't really care about toshing and
2) the way people are always So Impressed with Dodger (the character) rubs me the wrong way. I get it! You expect nothing from the poor!

5🌟 So far, this is my favourite Terry Pratchett. I liked the science of Discworld, but this was more fun to read, especially because I read (or had read to me) this character in the original Dickens as a child. I think I quite like Pratchett‘s Dodger more than Dickens‘s. I loved that Dickens and Mayhew were characters in this story.

GingerAntics I also enjoyed the other characters along the way that were actually historical figures. They were woven perfectly with Pratchett‘s original characters. #terrypratchett #dodger #dickens #mayhew #angelaburdettcoutts #history #fiction #historicalfiction #theartfuldodger 6y

In the book, unmentionables are everything between underwear and what‘s in your underwear.
At our house, unmentionables are dogs. We‘ve had dogs and cats, but more cats than dogs. It‘s become this thing that our cats think of dogs as “unmentionables” with the exception of K-9 units (officers, marines, seals, etc), fire dogs (firefighters), the queen‘s corgis, and the dogs on Pit Bulls and Parolees.

Starting Terry Pratchett‘s Dodger tonight.
#terrypratchett #dodger #audiobook

GingerAntics @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I started this one since it‘s due first (by a whole day), even though it‘s the longest one. Luckily at 2x speed it will still only take a little under 5.5 hours. 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa Good luck and enjoy! 6y
GingerAntics @Riveted_Reader_Melissa thank - if nothing else, it will get me through the long wait in the ER tomorrow. 6y
See All 39 Comments
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @GingerAntics Oh no! Why are you planning a long ER wait tomorrow? 6y
GingerAntics @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I need to have a tooth pulled so I can actually eat again, and it‘s the only option. 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @GingerAntics I‘m sorry to hear that, good luck then and I‘m glad you have an audiobook to help you pass the time. 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa So how‘d you make out, lots of quotes so I know the book is good, how about the teeth? 6y
GingerAntics @Riveted_Reader_Melissa 🙄 oh don‘t get me started. I told them I hadn‘t really eaten in three days, I was barely able to drink anything, and the only way I could sleep was to take 9 aleve. They shrugged and said they couldn‘t do anything. They didn‘t seem to care. So I have to just make it work. In a few weeks when we have some money, we‘re going to try the dental college. They‘re less concerned with people having dental coverage. 6y
GingerAntics @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I still haven‘t finished the book, but it‘s really good. I spent most of yesterday curled up in a ball with my headphones on. Unfortunately I didn‘t get very far because I kept restarting the chapter I was on because I kept a dosing off periodically. lol I made a little more progress last night. 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @GingerAntics I was hoping you made out well, but I was wondering...I know a lot of hospitals won‘t touch Dentistry... I thought they might refer you to a low cost/free dentistry service though. And the Dental Collage is a good idea, some of them are free because it‘s experience for the students. 6y
GingerAntics @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I looked it up and found the same thing. This particular hospital supposedly wouldn‘t. Their website talked about the dental clinic they have on their actual campus, and then even more they have all around the city. The website said they didn‘t require insurance and they could do same day extractions. That turned out to be a complete lie. 6y
GingerAntics @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Turned out they couldn‘t do anything for at least a week and wouldn‘t even give me an appointment without insurance. It was a total waste of time. If we had known that we would have talked to one of the colleges and gone to see them instead. They didn‘t even seem interested that it seems to have infected my sinus and ear on that side. They wouldn‘t even look into that. 6y
GingerAntics @Riveted_Reader_Melissa the doctor gave me 4 prescriptions, two of which I‘m allergic to. The impression I got was “oh well.” My mother was pissed they didn‘t even put me on an IV seeing that I‘d gone so long without water. They didn‘t even care. We left there so pissed. At least we have a plan. When we first left I had decided I would get tools from amazon and pull it myself, but after watching some videos it‘s not going to happen. lol 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @GingerAntics well I‘m glad you decided against that, but yes...I‘d also start looking into where you complain to the higher up and start throwing around false advertising and medical negligence. 6y
GingerAntics @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I hadn‘t thought of talking to any higher ups. Hm. I tagged them in something on Twitter, but I doubt anyone will even notice. That‘s something to think about. 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @GingerAntics Yes, there should be a supervisor on call number or something. Because seriously, just medications you‘re allergic to is a big problem all on it‘s own. 6y
GingerAntics @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I‘ll have to look. I fell asleep for a bit and now I can feel the swelling around that tooth. I can‘t open my mouth all the way and the gun is white at the very top. It‘s probably not a good thing, but I doubt they care. At least the lack of blood supply seems to have cut off some of the pain.* 6y
GingerAntics @Riveted_Reader_Melissa *not a good thing, but I‘m trying to see the silver lining. lol They‘re supposed to call to follow up in the next few days (probably Monday or Tuesday) and I definitely plan to tell them how horrible my visit was then. I‘ll actively look for a number to call, though. 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa Good luck, because that doesn‘t sound good at all 6y
GingerAntics @Riveted_Reader_Melissa thanks...it worries me, too, but there really isn‘t anything I can do about it. I literally used my only public transport pass to go to the ER yesterday. I can‘t get another for at least a week. (edited) 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @GingerAntics Another thing to complain about when you call them. 6y
GingerAntics @Riveted_Reader_Melissa that‘s going to be my problem, I‘m sure. The whole visit was “my problem.” Oh you can barely eat? Your problem. “You can‘t drink?” Your problem. “It‘s spreading?” Not even going to acknowledge that. I‘ll definitely add it to the list, because the person we emailed on Wednesday said to come on in because they would take care of me, and that‘s not what happened at all. 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @GingerAntics Maybe contact whoever the email was from 🙄 6y
GingerAntics @Riveted_Reader_Melissa we already emailed them back, but we didn‘t think of that until after 5 so we probably won‘t hear anything until Monday, if we hear anything at all. I‘ve lost all faith in them at this point. 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @GingerAntics make sure to Tweet lots, and leave comments widely. These are those stories that help some people understand why we need universal healthcare with dental urgently, because no, you can‘t just go into any ER and have it just taken care of.🙄 6y
GingerAntics @Riveted_Reader_Melissa that actually convinces people? I‘ve only ever seen people blamed for their problems and otherwise attacked. 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @GingerAntics I know, I keep dreaming that they might eventually listen...sorry.🤷‍♀️ 6y
GingerAntics @Riveted_Reader_Melissa lol you and me both. The only people I‘ve seen change their positions are people who go from able to afford their own care/having insurance to suddenly being on the other side and realising this isn‘t humane. 6y
GingerAntics @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I keep wanting to see the human side of these folks, but the attitude that it‘s “not our problem” makes it really hard...especially when people claim to be Christians or that god helps those who help themselves. 🙄 Last I checked Jesus didn‘t charge people for healing them. 🙄 Evangelicals have driven me away from Christianity all together. 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @GingerAntics I know, they have really given Christianity a bad name. Because real Christians would definitely be for healthcare, plus safely nets for the elderly, poor, etc. 6y
GingerAntics @Riveted_Reader_Melissa in every other country in the world, the people who are against defunding universal care and pushing for it to be maintained and made better are the Christians. It‘s just the uber rich who have the types of attitudes held by American Christians. It‘s truly stunning. This is not the Christianity I was introduced to as a child, but I wasn‘t evangelical either so maybe that‘s it. 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @GingerAntics Same here, United Methodist. 6y
GingerAntics @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I was raised Catholic. I don‘t remember ANYONE being like this. My mother had me out of wedlock. Everyone at the church helped my mother any way they could. Our Girl Scout troop made baby quilts for mother‘s homes. There would never have been a thought of anyone in the church going without medical treatment for something as stupid as not having the money. I just don‘t get this. This is not the Jesus I know about. 6y
GingerAntics @Riveted_Reader_Melissa they‘ve got an angry Jesus. I don‘t even know. 6y
GingerAntics @Riveted_Reader_Melissa that was 2,000 miles away from here, though, too. Maybe it‘s geographical, too. 🤷🏼‍♀️ 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @GingerAntics I completely agree, I started referring to it as Radical Fundamentalism Christianity around the time the Westboro Baptist Church was in the news all the time, but it never seem to catch on...wonder why 🙄 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa Yea I know, that can only be ‘Them‘, not ‘Us‘ 6y
GingerAntics @Riveted_Reader_Melissa oh Westboro Baptist just blows my mind. Seriously. I like that, “Radical Fundamentalism Christianity.” It‘s a good term for it. Then again, yeah, I think it‘s hard for people to think of people that are so similar to them or even their friends as radical. I have a friend whose mother would say “yeah you think we‘re radical because you‘re rejecting the one true god.” 🙄 6y
