Scythe by Neal Shusterman is a very twisted book about the workings of a “perfect”, world. It follows Rowan Damisch and Citra Terranova, in a world with no natural death, controlled by an all knowing AI. The two children that have very opposite lives in the beginning of the of the book, but have a similar experience when both have a run in with a Scythe, the only thing that is able to kill in this world, that encounter would lead to them meeting.

Sean.Ceballos And both of them getting offered a role as the Scythe's apprentice, although only one of them can become a scythe. We follow them for a while training to become Scythes, with occasional jumps to the perspectives of regular people in the world while Scythes do their business, till the middle of the book.

Scythe is told in a third-person omniscient point of view, we see the thoughts and actions of multiple different characters throughout the book.
(edited) 2w
Sean.Ceballos Which shows the perspectives of normal people and Scythes in the dystopia they in.

If you enjoy sci-fi dystopias with hints of tragedy like Maze Runner, then you should definitely checkout Scythe, for it has a lot of the same sort of themes.

I was apprehensive about this one since it is considered YA, but was so surprised not only by the story itself but that this is considered YA😅 In a society where disease is eradicated, people can be brought back to life, and one can “turn a corner” if you get too old, death is no longer an everyday fear. With overpopulation an obvious issue, the society introduces Scythes, people trained in taking lives or as the society calls it “gleaning”.

If you picture this type of world, do you feel that these scythes are serial killers of as the book expounds a privileged few… even though corruption is involved? … I‘m just now on chapter 20 and although I haven‘t read the rest I see some psychologically prevalent issues with this system… thank goodness it‘s fiction 👀 📖

Probably the best YA book I‘ve read-good writing and digs DEEP into current issues facing humanity and I was shook about how good this book is.
In a perfect world created by a benevolent AI, humans must still die, and humans are the ones who choose who and how other humans die-The Scythes are the only human controlled organization left. Two teens chosen by an old guard Scythe must contend with the rising corruption.

Dystopia; good v evil in a world where death is no longer a natural part of life. When two apprentices are pitted against each other, the old guard and new guard are revealed and as always power corrupts, or does it?

Dystopian YA - possibly my most addictive genre.
Set in a post-mortal future where Scythes are entrusted to glean the population to ensure against over population. Citra and Rowan are two teens chosen to become scythe apprentices at time of arising dissent amongst the Scythedom.
Polly loved this when she read it a few years ago and I can see why. Highly addictive, yet thought-provoking and well-written.

I didn‘t love this book. In a world where humanity has overcome pain, death, war, disease and many other things, everyone is immortal. Select people called ‘Scythes‘ are chosen and trained to kill them at any time, but it is called ‘gleaning‘, instead. Anyone can ‘reset‘ their age, and be sent to a ‘revival center‘ to be healed from a mortal wound. Scythes can choose to kill anyone in a variety of ways. The story is an interesting concept, ⬇️

JenniferEgnor but to me, all of this takes the sacredness out of death and dying. All data and memories of persons are uploaded into a computer like system. What are we left with to honor them? Where are our rituals and ceremonies surrounding death and dying? There is no grief, only a numbness while you continue to exist. 12mo

The antagonist of my book is the main enemy of the world that Citra and Rowan live in which is Scythe Goddard. They believe that gleaning should be public and out there to the world, as this is the only way for non-scythes to remember what it's like to be alive instead of dying.

The main conflict of the book Scythe is that the two main characters, Citra and Rowan experience their lives in a society placed in the future where death is not a real thing and the only way people can die is by being murdered or “gleaned“. This conflict is character vs. nature.

My greatest wish for humanity is not for peace or comfort or joy. It is that we all still die a little inside every time we witness the death of another. For only the pain of empathy will keep us human. There‘s no version of God that can help us if we ever lose that.

-Continuation from first post
Soon, things spin off course and they get separated (all I can say without giving spoilers). I haven't finished the book, but it's not a bad one. The protagonists are very likeable, characteristic individuals, although the book is a little dark and extreme. If you generally enjoy reading dystopian books, this could be right for you!

This is a very interesting book. It's set in a futuristic dystopian world where the population has conquered death and all illnesses, so this small group of people called “scythes“ are in charge of killing people to avoid overpopulation. The main characters (a girl called Citra and a boy named Rowan) are selected to be scythes in training (apprentices) because of their high levels of morality and human compassion.

In the future there are no wars, no diseases, no corruption, everyone is immortal and has nanites in their system that quell pain and control extreme emotions. That means there's no natural death either. The job is done by scythes and it's called gleaning.
A very interesting world and a fast-paced story that kept me rooting for the MCs.

Great start to a dystopian YA trilogy. Disease, death & all bad things are over, it‘s a “perfect world” but people still need to die, hence the role of the scythe. A perfect world where death has been conquered, surprise deaths and dangers are obsolete. All because that‘s the job of a scythe. They “glean”, don‘t kill, for the good of humanity. I feel for both Citra and Rowan being thrown into this job, one they don‘t want. It was intriguing to look upon how they train differently. Though their attraction to each other felt out of place. The villain had good points. The Thunderhead is very interesting

The end papers are 6 different pieces of art, each page has a border, signed by author. The hard cover is foiled & has a quote on the front, a design on the spine, and similar backs with block sprayed edges on top/bottom & stenciled edges. The jackets are reversible.

Aside from the interesting setting, the characters are all so intriguing and you can‘t help but root for good to prevail. Lots of questions about loyalty and right vs wrong. Okay. You were all right! I really enjoyed this! I read some YA but not much, this was creative and interesting.
I enjoyed the world he built, and think there are a lot of thought provoking questions raised. I really liked the older Scythes and see potential for many spin offs.
Some criticism - I wish the relationship between the two mains was flushed out a bit more. I had a hard time understanding why they liked each other.
